Hey @darthbluesky.bsky.social, can you share this picture of Tucker with everybody? He was the best boy and we were completely devastated when we had to put him down Monday morning. He'd love to know that he's famous from the other side of the rainbow bridge!
A brown-and-white dog with pointy ears rests his chin and paws on the arm of a couch. He ia the most handsome boy you have ever seen.

I really love this Florida author book vending machine at the Gainesville Regional Airport courtesy of @thelynxbooks.bsky.social. Seeing some favorite authors in there, including @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social and @pluralistic.net.web.brid.gy
A grwen vending machine containing books. The writing on the side says "The Lynx, Florida"A close-up of the cover of Jeff Vander Meer's book "Annihilation." The tag reads "Tallahassee-based Jeff Vander Meer is the pride of Florida's speculative community: this is his chef d' oeuvre"A spread of many colored book covers displayed in a vending machine. The machine had a label that reads "www.thelynxbooks.com"

It is moments like this that you begin to understand why so many have demonized empathy and compassion. They want us to care so little for others that we will ignore injustices being carried out against them. It is in moments like these that love for others is revolutionary.

What we’re losing isn’t just civility, it’s the infrastructure for shared sense-making. Without that, disagreement becomes existential. That’s when democracy starts to collapse.

Truth Social is where the man who thinks he runs the country announces his latest move.

X is where the man who actually runs the country gets his ideas for the president's next move.

Threads is where people proudly resist both of them by patronizing a different billionaire who agrees with whatever the president says.

Bluesky is where people are absolutely furious with the president's latest move and know exactly who to blame: the headline writers at the New York Times.

Facebook is where people think the president's latest move was opening a casino for dolphins in Gaza with Jesus and they love it.

Authoritarians always attack independent sources of knowledge--they want the ability to decide what is true and what is not true. Teachers, librarians, journalists, researchers are all being threatened and harassed, even Wikipedia: www.404media.co/email/38ceb1...

Florida: 8 schools received more than $10 million from NIH in 2024 for a total of ~$673 million. Of that, $442 million went directly ot research and $231 million to facilities and administration. The new indirect cost rate would bring that to $66 million, a loss of $165 million.

An excellent summary of the NIH situation: "More generally, this new effort is a direct attack on universities–independent institutions that provide a key location for developing ideas and information that do not accord with, and often promote dissent from, the goals of the current Trump regime."

We are not far away from your spouse’s cancer trial stopping, your parent’s Alzheimer’s clinical trial evaporating, your teen’s mental health intervention disappearing. It’s easy to attack universities, but the recent actions from the White House will stop cutting edge medical research very quickly.

I'm hearing a lot from the media NGO sector about the impact of USAID cuts. A lot of small investigative media organisations across the globe are facing imminent closure as the funding they've budget for has vanished overnight, and the funder community has no capacity to absorb the shock.
