#WyrdWednesday In the tale of Peredur, the Mabinogion's version of the Perceval myth, there is an interesting episode that is quite particular to this Welsh telling of the story. When Peredur arrives at the Hall of the Sons of the King of Suffering, he finds only women present.

It was translated by William Owen Pughe, (pub. 1819) whose scholarship was very eccentric, so even the translation must have been weird.

Borrow's Welsh must have been quite weird as he initially learnt it from a stableboy and from the translation of Paradise Lost. People keep thinking he's a Breton or a Spaniard when they talk to him. And then when he gets to south Wales he starts criticising the poor quality of south Wales Welsh.

WJ Gruffydd (1881-1954) was a poet, true, but not really Victorian, and he was also Professor of Celtic at Cardiff Uni.

I always photograph memorials to people that you find in remote locations. In this case on top of Parys Mountain, Anglesey. They’re part of the funerary & ritual archaeology of the future. In this case, given the date of death (July 2020), you wonder if Kirsty (33) was a Covid victim.

A Welsh Sorceror’s Magical Diary from 1832?
Who wrote the mysterious diary entry from 1832 about unwitching a farm in Wales. Was it a cunning man or a curious antiquarian?

My video explaining about the terms for the equinox in Welsh and why the neo-Pagan autumn equinox festival of Mabon was invented in the 1970s. Oddly enough, there really was a Welsh holiday named after Mabon, but it was something very different. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCxM...

The odd thing is that there was actually a holiday named after Mabon that had nothing to do with the current neo-Pagan name for the Autumn Equinox.

When the head was viewed and it was known that it was not Owain's head, one of the King's court sang: Madyn the lame spoke falsely about the lord of the Glyn because no wart was found on the forehead of the old grey man. [Panton MS 11 (2/2)

After Owain Glyndŵr's death, Madyn brought a head to the King saying that it was Owain's head, and the King asked the Welsh whether they would recognize Owain's head, and one of them said that he would know if he could see it because there was a wart on the crown. (1/2)

#TombTuesday Lligwy Burial Chamber is a Neolithic burial chamber on Ynys Môn. It consists of a circle of upright stones, made into a low chamber by a very large roof slab estimated at 25 tonnes. Excavation in 1909 found the remains of some 15 to 30 people & pottery. #Archaeology
