❔There were big differences in mycelial ingrowth likely due to a summer drought in the second year of the experiment - it really makes me think about the transience of mycorrhizosphere processes. Nature doesn’t always cooperate with our plans 😉

💥The ectomycorrhizosphere may directly enhance decomposition in humus but indirectly slow decomposition in needle litter, while 🫐 shrub-associated ericoid mycorrhizal fungi have been found do the opposite—boosting litter decomposition but slowing humus decomposition.

🌳 Ericaceous understory shrubs and the microscopic fungi they associate with on roots are ubiquitous in boreal forests, and their interactions with ectomycorrhizal (pictured) and saprotrophic fungi may determine organic matter dynamics in forest soils.

Really cool study on ectomycorrhizal decomposers, that use manganese peroxidases to degrade organic matter (most likely to mine nitrogen). The authors identify 10 taxa as EcM decomposers (mostly Cortinarius spp.) and look into their niches 👇🧪🌍🍄 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Overview figure of the study showing a map of Sweden with sampling locations and a description of the two major parts of the study. The first part consists of using a regional dataset used to assign ectomycorrhizal decomposers and the second part of using a national dataset to determine the niche of ectomycorrhizal decomposers.

I think we can. If clear cutting is still intended then smaller sizes should be recommended. Increasing the rotation age as well will encourage more fungi to re-establish.

Louis Mielke @myconet.bsky.social · 20/06/2025
An overall takeaway is that medium to large patches of trees may reduce fragmentation stress and better sustain an array of late-seral fungi.
111
Louis Mielke @myconet.bsky.social · 20/06/2025
After a few decades post clear cutting, ectomycorrhizal fungal communities are still slowly recovering and certain species are still more likely to be found in the forest rather than on the forest edges or openings.
