Highly recommended! Hanna’s team is doing ground-breaking research, Stockholm is a lovely city, and a Swedish PhD position is very attractive - an actual job with paid holidays, sick leave, parental leave and pension rights.

Mind blown by @hannajohannesson.bsky.social talk on fungal ‘fairy rings’ and their incredible early germline sequestration doi.org/10.1126/scie... #ESEB2025

Early germline sequestration in a basidiomycete fungus
In sexual organisms, inheritance of new mutations is highly dependent on the timing of germline definition. Here, we used the fairy ring–forming fungus Marasmius oreades to challenge the general assum...

It started as a master thesis project by Markus Hiltunen, and ended up in this publication in Science. What a fun project to work on! Thanks Markus - and all other coauthors, too, for a great team work! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Our lab went out in the forest and helped our dedicated master student Mario to gather edible mushrooms for cultivation. Here is the end product! In particular proud of Hericium coralloides who fruited nicely for Mario in the lab! 😀 imafungus.pensoft.net/article/1422...

Our paper on the evolution of a bipolar sexual compatibility system in Marasmius is out! We show that Marasmius obeys to the typical Agaricomycete way to evolve bipolarity from tetrapolarity - by loss of mating compatibility function of the P/R locus. doi.org/10.1080/0027...

Evolution of a bipolar sexual compatibility system in Marasmius
Sexual compatibility in the Basidiomycota is governed by genetic identity at one or two loci, resulting in compatibility systems called bipolar and tetrapolar. The loci are known as HD and P/R, enc...
