Bird of the Day: Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) #birdoftheday #botd #westerncattleegret #cattleegret #bubulcusibis #birdsoftheworld #birds #birdbrainerapp #birdbrainer | birdbrainer.app
A compact white bird standing upright among small purple wildflowers in dry grass, with a pale buff- orange wash on the crown and upper breast, a sturdy yellow-orange bill, yellow eye, and pale yellowish legs, against a dark out-of-focus background

Originally native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Western Cattle Egret has spread to become one of the most widespread herons in the world, colonising the Americas, Australia, southern Europe, and many oceanic islands over the past century. Associates closely with cattle and other large animals, catching insects disturbed from the ground; in breeding plumage, the bill and legs briefly flush orange-red and buff plumes adorn the head, breast, and mantle

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌍 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A large bird of prey (1.9–2.4 m / 6.2–7.9 ft wingspan) standing amidst tall green grass. It features a striking white head and breast, a yellow face and beak with a dark hook, and deep chestnut-brown plumage on its body and wings against a softly blurred natural background.

Clue: Known as the "voice of Africa," this majestic raptor is a master angler whose echoing call is a signature sound of Sub-Saharan waterways.

Fun Fact: Their feet are lined with sharp structures called spiricules to help them grip slippery, wriggling fish straight out of the water!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A photo of a relatively large bird (25–27 cm / approx. 10 in long) perching on a wooden branch. It features a large, bright red beak, a deep brown head and neck, vibrant royal-blue plumage on its belly, and turquoise wing feathers.

Clue: This island-dwelling bird is named after its Indonesian home and shares a famous family name with a royal angler.

Fun fact: Instead of building a nest in tree branches, it digs long horizontal tunnels—sometimes up to a meter deep—into sunlit soil walls and earthen riverbanks to lay its eggs.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Bird of the Day: Superb Starling (Lamprotornis superbus) #birdoftheday #botd #superbstarling #lamprotornissuperbus #birdsoftheworld #birds #birdbrainerapp #birdbrainer
A vividly coloured medium-sized bird standing in left profile on dry pale grass, with a velvety black head and throat, a striking creamy-white iris, a short pointed black bill, brilliant iridescent cobalt-blue and turquoise upperparts, dark wings marked with round black spots, a rich orange-chestnut breast and belly, a white lower-belly patch, slender black legs, and a short blue-black tail, against a softly blurred beige ground.

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌎 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A close-up photo of a relatively large bird (43–56 cm / 17–22 in long) resting on the back of a white outdoor chair. It features a white face and breast, a slender black crest of curled feathers on top of its head, vibrant blue upper back and wing plumage, and a thin black band wrapped around its upper chest.

Clue: Look for a striking crest and a long, graceful tail—this vocal Central American bird is a colourful member of the crow and jay family!

Fun Fact: These birds are cooperative breeders with a unique social system: female offspring often stay with their parents to help incubate eggs and feed future broods.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A Western Flycatcher permits a portrait. Its scientific name is Empidonax difficilis. Empidonax is part of a genus of flycatchers. Difficilis because it is easily confused with other species, has a disconcertingly irregular range. Let’s forget all that and just enjoy the photo. #birds_matter #birds

@helenbennett.bsky.social's chosen theme for today's #BirdOfTheDay is #BokehBirds - any bird captured with a soft, muted or blurry background. The Alt theme is #AwkwardAvian - any bird captured in a silly, clumsy or strange position! #Birds #Nuthatch #ECK #Bokeh #NaturePhotography
A white-breasted nuthatch is a small, mostly blue and white bird, with a white face, throat, and breast and a russet belly. It has blue/gray wings and a midnight blue cap that begins at its dark beak and ends at its nape. The nuthatch's head is upturned toward the left as it grasps a curved branch of a water oak tree with dark green leaves surrounding it. A bokeh of green, gold, and blue fills the frame.
