This is a funny joke yes but also really bespeaks the AI use case of "perfect for doing a shitload of something you were already doing pretty badly and don't care about the consequences of fucking up"

Option two is that states have to share their two senators until their combined total population is equal to California. Then we have like sixteen senators total, bosh, problem solved

Miel @mxmarkus.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I have often considered this, take the smallest states population as the floor (Wyoming) and add one additional senator for each Wyoming above 1. So Wyoming gets two senators and California gets 80, bosh, problem solved.

Does the purge defense apply to civil suits?
000
Miel @mxmarkus.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The thing with the purge is that presumably there's a fairly hefty burden of proof placed on prosecutors and litigants that the acts under dispute did not take place during the purge which feels like a truck-sized loophole

A still from Mad Men season 6 episode 8 "The Crash." Ken Cosgrove, high on an unknown stimulant injection, dances with a cane despite his recent injury while Don Draper, also intoxicated, looks on sweaty and dumbfounded along with his secretary Dawn, who is sober.

I thought it was that he had a *genetic predisposition* for a heart condition he hadn't actually developed, not an actual heart condition. Isn't that the whole deal with Uma Thurman, that she developed a condition even though the genetic engineering made it sub-1% probable that she would?

anyway, the American id understander himself, Hunter S. Thompson, the next week for goddamn ESPN of all places. the party's over, folks.
We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."

Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history -- which is no doubt true -- but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a war-time economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.

That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks. The time has come for loyal Americans to Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. That is the new buzz-word in Washington. But what it means is not entirely clear.

One bit of 9/11 ephemera I think about was how they weren’t sure if they should address the events of 9/11 on Friends so they just made Joey wear FDNY T Shirts in a couple of episodes

It can be hard to understand why people who were around for 9/11 and the ensuing events speak about it as memorable, but this is made easier if one keeps in mind that it was a world historic event that had momentous effects both at home and abroad.

The DC property that would work with a multiple timeline edgy mystery and a senior-junior buddy cop dynamic is The Question

Green Lantern was always a poor fit for this genre tho the Lanterns cop show isn't True Detective it's The Untouchables

Like maybe it was naive of me to think the propulsive mystery and multiple timelines True Detective thing would actually get used with anything like sophistication but that third episode should have been like four flashbacks at points in the season where it matters to know the things.

Also also also European govts generally have more and harsher speech restrictions around specific topics that tend to get unevenly enforced on the left vs right (Palestine Action is a proscribed terror organization in the UK that you can be jailed for "expressing support" for, as an example)

Miel @mxmarkus.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Also also the numbers of every group is just so much smaller in Europe, the whole Texas is bigger than France thing matters when it comes to what a counter-action looks like here vs there

Miel @mxmarkus.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Also it is hard to feel from inside the US but anti racism as a cultural force is real and pervasive here in a way that Europe has simply never taken it as seriously. I know that sounds insane but there is a certain bedrock racial egalitarianism in the US that simply isn't there in Europe.

My sense is that it's an even smaller and more inbred elite ruling structure and information environment. The ruling class consists of like twenty people who all have dinner together constantly and the Murdoch press triple-pickles reactionaries in heritage jars. At least in Britain.

A man is vacuuming while trying to make conversation with someone in another room. He is thrilled with the turning radius of the machine. A voice from the other room yells, “What?” The vacuuming man yells back, “I said this puppy’s got serious turning radius.” It’s likely he’ll continue to repeat himself over the sound of the vacuum Artist’s note: I’m always aiming for bold and sloppy line work. We achieved that here.

But the movie has no "and then" for them, it just lingers briefly in the afterglow of that climactic self-discovery. It's a jerk off movie about jerking off.

And I think what leaves people, especially True Blue Sex Havers, cold about it is that it doesn't progress beyond the acknowledgment and embrace of these things, a thing they all did as actual teenagers. There's a strong sense of "okay. And then??"
