My second job in high school – hired to be a dishwasher at a restaurant. My first night they made me devein shrimp and, though not allergic to them, the smell can frequently be enough to make me vomit. They fired me after 2 hours.

The Midterms
Two trans people are being confronted by a Democrat Consultant type who is pleading with them: "I understand the Democrat backtracked on trans rights, but you have to vote for him! Otherwise, normal people's rights will be threatened!"

I really wish it was easier to configure most routers to block access per device. You could temporarily allow the jerkass TV through then re-block. I know how to do it, but my parents' router doesn't even have it as an option!

Mmm... love that vocabulary. I found a way to include that in my book. It confused everyone. I loved it. (*Intermediate* phalange, btw.)

Every movie, song, and book that you love was made without the technology that people who don’t make art are now insisting is necessary for making art.

While not as cool as Val's list, some chapters I had fun titling:
Chapters from MVC's first book: "Are rodeos common in space?", "Several rugs yanked out from underneath unsuspecting chumps", "A feature not a bug", and "The fastest gun in space".

Chapters from MVC's second book: "What was he thinking?", "Oh *that's* what he was thinking", "Space's new fastest gun.", and "Now that's what I call justice vol 2".

I call this piece, “She Works Hard For the Bikkies.”
MVC’s cat, laying on her side but partially curled up, one arm draped over her body and a back paw peeking out over her tail. Her head is propped up and smooshed against a bump in the bedsheet, so half of her face is hidden. The visible eye is fully closed. She looks comfy.

Good question! Alt text is for context, and depends on the context of the post! Is it a reply by way of a cat making a silly face? You don’t need to describe its fur, just the face. Is the cat lying in the sun, and you took the photo because of how its fur looks? Describe that fur!

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

There’s truly nothing like a screenshot of a tweet from a person I have blocked, mentioning a term I have blocked. And, as always, prefaced by a hand pointing down emoji. *chef kiss*

Tweet by NeerajKA. Neeraj posted a collage of article headlines: "Scientists can erase specific memories from a snail's brain", "Scientists made snails remember something that never happened," and "Scientists have transplanted memory from one snail to another." Neeraj's comment about these is, "they are really fuckin these snails up," with no capitalization or punctuation. (The quoted post's image is deer in front of bales of hay, making them appear like snails.)

Use ALT text. It's relatively easy to do, you can set Bluesky to not allow you to post pics without it, and you can easily search up best practices for it. The added bonus is that you're more likely to get more engagement as well.

Had a good dinner at the local Indian restaurant. Made my favorite cocktail. Favorite incense is going. Record player is spinning Glass Beams. It’s a good night.
An incense stick burns in its holder. Behind it are three boxes of incense sticks. Just to the right of them is a coupe glass with a murky, pale brown cocktail, garnished with a dehydrated lime. Just to the right of that are boxes for India temple and Nag Champa incense cones.

The winner of the fifth Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (SPSFC) is Our Simulated Selves by @nikkinull.bsky.social. “[T]his book could legitimately help a lot of people understand themselves.” — SPSFC 4 winner Wick Welker spsfc.space/2026/10/08/t...
The cover of Nikki Null's science fiction novel Our Simulated Selves, which depicts two abstract figures high above a vast metropolis. The city is real and the people are rendered as ASCII art characters. A portal of rectangles also depicted as ASCII is below them.

I know I harp on this, but when you moderate to your own feelings and those of high profile users, you moderate detrimentally to the majority of your users. That's what is happening here. People have legitimate concerns, but get told they're being abusive. Do not offer. Or do, with contingency.

MVC RIP @mvc.rip · 30/09/2026
Said automation will likely flag these posts as abuse, despite them being legitimate and well thought out criticisms. But that isn't even a good measurement anyway! A criticism doesn't need to be thought out or even civil to be taken seriously.

MVC RIP @mvc.rip · 30/09/2026
A head of trust and safety's responsibility is to all of the users on their site, irrespective of how their interactions with those users go. Claiming to be proud of automating, "abuse," reactions against those users runs counter to the established purpose of the role. It's immature.

If I worked at an investment firm and was tasked with due diligence for a potential offer to Bluesky, my recommendation to the firm managers would be to make any proposal contingent upon the removal of leaders who behave like Aaron Rodericks.

All that said, not everyone can do this! So I hope others will extend a little dialogue grace for the authors who can’t voice test theirs.

MVC RIP @mvc.rip · 30/09/2026
My process was collaborative. Friend read a chapter, noted issues, I adjusted in the moment, friend re-read. But I’m sure a full read then fix would probably work, too.

MVC RIP @mvc.rip · 30/09/2026
Ymmv, but if you have hearing loss, find a really good friend/partner to read your dialogue aloud - even if they aren’t writers, they’ll still catch stuff for you! I did this with my first book, and it worked well.
