Should We Look to Hunter-Gatherer Societies as Models of Equality?
Hunter‑gatherer societies are often put on a pedestal for being truly egalitarian—but the reality is more complicated.

I'm retiring from my day job. This will be a huge change for me. Some of this change has the potential to be really good... #retirement #change muz4now.com/2026/and-now-for-someth…

And now for something completely different

Instead, I’m going to talk about my day job. ## The First Day Job This is not the “other day job“. This is the one that has made the most money over a few decades. I’ve been working as an I.T. (Information Technology) engineer for over forty years. (And now you know that I’ll older than you thought.) Some of those work years have been amazing and others have required me to quiet my creative desires. ## Being Not Doing Thankfully, I don’t think I’ve ever had to sell my soul. I’ve just had to hide parts of the real me occasionally. In this age of AI, LLM, billionaire tech lords, and tech for fascism, I think my timing is good to leave the industry. I don’t see much good coming from technology at this moment. So, I’m fine with retiring. That’s right: I’m retiring from my day job. I think this will be good for my soul. And I think this will be good for my musical creativity. ## Day After Day Oops, I did talk about music. But that was inevitable. It’s part of my core. And yet, the end of my I.T. career will be a loss. It has formed the structure of so many of each days for so many days. That will — and already has — lead to grief. I’ve created a retirement job description. In many ways, it’s like a musician’s dream life. Here I go… ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * ### Like this: Like Loading… ### _More for you_ * * * ### Discover more from Stan Stewart - @muz4now Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email. 5 things you can do to keep play in your life and the world

Now, I’d like to offer five ongoing inspirations — projects, tools and organizations — that have been helpful to me in keeping play present in my life. I hope they can be helpful to you, too. First, I can’t mention InterPlay enough. This is a wonderful, well-established set of practices and forms that helps people to unlock the wisdom of the body using active, creative means. Personally, I appreciate it enough to be a “certified leader” in InterPlay. You can find out lots more about InterPlay and connect with them various places by starting with their “about me” page. The InterPlay Inspiration Deck with “incrementality” selected as my card for the day. That being said, if you can’t get to an InterPlay event, the best practice I can recommend is to use the InterPlay Inspiration Deck as a daily tool to get your dose of playfulness. This may lead to introspection or pure fun. I just know that it’s an awesome initiator and reminder to be present and inspired each day. I pick a card from The Deck almost every day, so it sits next to my computer desk constantly. Second, check out the work of Stuart Brown, M.D., who takes us back to the 15th Century to remind us that adult play is not new. Third, help “Seriously: the Movie” to get off the ground and spread the word about play even more! This awesomely playful project combines real-world examples with current research and is still in its early stages at the moment. Expect to see their crowdsourcing get underway soon. Fourth, connect with the U.S. Play Coalition if you’re in the United States. Their annual conference is a great way to become infused with the joys of play. And finally, look for playful people. You may be surprised. There may already be “playgroups” in your area waiting for you to join. I’m sure you have other play-based organizations and projects that others can use to encourage play locally and globally. Please post them here so that we can all benefit from the wonders of play. Playful blessings, Stan ### Please share! Double that if they appear as an automated response within seconds of connecting.” And added, “The flip is, assuming anyone still checks their DM box, a personalized message is a great way to stand out. Look at the person’s interests and find a mutual connection point… it takes more time, but what price a new fan?” A perfect _Do This, Not That_ from someone who really gets the music business. It does not not achieve what it claims and is very anti-social. _I never click-through TrueTwit validation requests_. The best way to find out if Tweeps are real people is to interact with them. ## …not that… OR What’s a “bot mention” anyway? Every day, I get messages on Twitter — sent _to_ me as a _mention_ because the other person included my Twitter name @muz4now in the message — asking me to check out a song. Too many of them are automated or _bot_ mentions. _I do not listen to songs that are sent in bot mentions_. This bot mention approach is a pet peeve of my friend Linda Freeman. “When people send me a message and want to make it sound personal, but send out identical messages to many other people. This is most obvious on Twitter, where I look at the profile of someone new who tweets me. For example, someone may tweet, ‘I love your music and you have a great future ahead of you. Could you give my music a listen?’ When I go to their tweets, I see that they’ve sent identical messages out to at least 20 other people. First, I know that the message is insincere just from its wording. Second, it really is a turnoff when I see they’ve sent the same message to lots of other people.” Is there good and bad automation on social media? #SM Click To Tweet ## Do this… Does this mean that you should never use automation of any kind? No. There are dozens of types of automation that help you save time with anything from publicizing your gigs on social media to creating a new post on your social networks each time you post a blog. If you scan my posts on Twitter, you’ll definitely figure out that I use my share of automation to keep my tweet stream lively. But if you are setting up your Twitter account just so that you can let Songkick or some other service post automatically to it and you never plan to look at what your fans and friends are saying (in general or especially _to_ you), then skip it. Sure, social networking is a marketing tool, but it is _social_ first. Interact with the people who connect with you. Interact with people you _want_ to be connected with. Start conversations. Respond to posts by your friends with questions, re-shares, likes/favs, and so on. Then, I think it’s fine and expected if you happen to intermingle a few automated posts about upcoming gigs or whatever. Just don’t send them as a mention. Let your friends and fans see them on their own. If you have specific people you want to invite to come to a gig or listen to a song, then send it by hand, just for them. Wow! If you read all the way to here, you are really ready for the next in this series. Forget a birthDAY – Let’s have a birthWEEK
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Some people love to celebrate birthdays and others don’t. I fall in that “don’t” camp. ## Birthday Ponderings Well, let me clarify. I’m fine with honoring the anniversary of being born (AKA a birthday). I’m just not certain that one day is enough. Maybe that’s enough for celebrating it with my friends and family. But for me personally, I’m going to need several days. This is why I’ve started to think of this time as a birthWEEK and a birthMONTH. After all, there is a precedent of honoring our birth month known as birthstones, monthly gems, scents, colors, and so on. These are cool as long as they are part of what inspires me to ponder what it means to have been born — what it means to be alive. Isn’t it better to have a birthWEEK than a birthDAY? Click To Tweet ## Introspections I’m always honored by the many friends who wish me “happy birthday” on or near the actual day. And however much joy and connection that brings, I am finding that my birthweek is more about my own self-reflection with every passing year. This sort of introspection can sometimes be done in a day, but more often requires weeks, months, and even years. That’s why I’m finding this concept of a birthweek/birthmonth to be so important. The cool thing is that I don’t need to have a national or even statewide campaign to make the birthweek a thing. All I have to do is decide to do it myself and I can “make it so”. Is your birthday a time for introspection, celebration, or both? Click To Tweet ## Birthday Celebrations If I know that I can have the time I need to consider my life, then I can celebrate, too. One of my mentors has a saying, “Celebrate everything.” I guess that is sort of what birthday and birthweek celebrations have become for me: a time to celebrate and give thanks for everything in my life. So, my suggestion to you: if you need more than a day to celebrate you, go for it. You (and I) are worth it. ### Please share! The voice I hear Is inviting enough. Yet my mind says “no” while My heart says “yes”. I long for these two to be In tune, to harmonize and Symphonize. Both long to sing Together. For now, though, it is more of a dance. No choreography, it is an improvised Movement towards The beautiful unknown. This dancing in the dark is Filled with enticing mystery; As if the darkness is actually A dimly lit cloud, Luminous with anticipation. And that is why Each shifting of sinew And tendon brings me to an Encounter with that moist Air of the cloud, connecting With the liquidity of the motion Until the dancing becomes swimming; a welcome drowning In the Sea of Mists. ~ spontaneously created by Stan Stewart ~ copyright © 2013 by muz4now, inc. ### Please share! Sharing Independent Music and Community
Community is cool. Maybe it's just what the world needs. I can't claim to be everything for everyone here at muz4now. But I will start to share the music of other independent artists more regularly. Here's the backstory. When the skies are blue I joined a social network named BlueSky not too long ago. Like the federated social networks, bsky.app does not incorporate commercial (paid) advertising or the kinds of sponsorships that have made networks like Twitter/X and Facebook so […]

Begin – 3 Ideas for Actually Starting Creative Projects
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * You must begin. Until you start, your creative (or any) projects won’t finish themselves. (Don’t you hate that?) Here are some tips that might be starting points for taking your creativity beyond a concept or imaginative idea. (It will probably come as no surprise that these are exactly what I need now, too.) Do you have other ideas for how to begin? Please share them in the comments or in a mention on Twitter. Though these might be adapted to commissioned art (i.e., someone else asked you to create it), I’m thinking mostly about the projects you initiate yourself. In my experience, these are the trickiest to get past the idea phase. For many creatives, learning how to begin a project is a big deal. Click To Tweet ## Be Your Own Best Client Many of us have clients or customers for whom we create art. Whether we do work-for-hire, coach others in our field, or many other client-based efforts, we know how to treat our customers: they know best and come first. Why not take this skill and use it on ourselves? Make yourself priority one. Use the same techniques you would practice on a customer or patron on your personal project. I’ve had success with this idea. If you’re finding it to be challenging to think of yourself in the same terms as a customer, write yourself a contract. (Hopefully, you do that for your clients. If so, just fill out one for yourself. Sign it, too.) This is a sort of psychological trick on yourself to treat yourself like your own best client. In any case, once you’ve played the trick, be sure to begin. ## Take Advantage of Yourself Hopefully, along the way you and I have learned a lot about ourselves. One great thing about this is that we can use our self-knowledge to motivate and prioritize. Besides the obvious examples of rewarding ourselves, there are many ways to use self-understanding to move forward on creative projects. Here are some examples: * If you enjoy doing the imaginative planning, but are not as fond of one of the implementation steps, intermingle the two processes. In this way, you get some of the process that you enjoy the most and also accomplish some of what does not bring you as much joy. * Maybe you love to reinvigorate your imagination with long walks in nature, but you know that this is also a way to avoid the project. Set a timer on your phone for half the time you can afford to walk and return to your studio as soon as the alarm goes off. The point is simply to think of the way you work and the things you appreciate most (or least) in the creative process. Use these as ways to begin and then keep beginning throughout the project. How can you move beyond procrastination to create what’s in your imagination? Click To Tweet ## To-do-go We all have “to-do” lists. Whether they are on paper, in an app, or in our head, the list of things we need to accomplish is somewhere. The problem with many of these lists (or the items on them) is that they don’t get done. How about a to-do-go list instead? Rather than big, sweeping goals we need to accomplish, break the list down to a doable number (ten or less) that are incremental parts of the process. Try to come up with things that can be completed in 30 minutes or less. Then, commit to starting 2 of these each day that you work on the project. If you find you have time for more than two, go ahead! If you are not practiced at coming up with incremental steps, be really kind to yourself as you learn how to do this breakdown. After a while, it becomes fun to split the larger goals or processes into these steps that are easier to begin and complete. Three ideas to help you begin a creative project Click To Tweet ## Begin The important thing is to begin. Whether it’s the whole project (beyond the initial idea) or a step in the process, beginning is crucial. What other methods do you use to begin your creative projects? Please leave your ideas in the comments! ### Please share! 3 Ways Emotionally Intelligent People Keep Drama Away
Emotionally intelligent individuals tend to dodge unnecessary drama by doing three things. They avoid petty power struggles, delay gratification when they need to, and always seem to have gratitude.

Certainly, this melting is of love. But more than that, it is a melting in grief. How odd to mourn people unseen, unmet. Yet my anguish is as real as if their dying and suffering were of a dearest love. Strange, too, how these troubling times with the distance created by pandemic isolation and political polarization have also made our whole humanity smaller. It is as if we can no longer ignore the smallness of our existence and the compact planet on which we human beings once thrived. Yes, I am sad. In grief, I hold out my heart to the millions who have died in the wake of this wild year or two. Just as much, I also grieve with every person who has lost someone. It does not matter if it was from the virus or not. Why? Because our grieving and commemorations are traumatized yet again in the face of these deep and sad separations. ~ created spontaneously by Stan Stewart ~ Copyright © 2021 by Stan Stewart and muz4now, inc. Piano Library Comparison – 4 worthy contenders

But this time, I changed that up completely. For this release, I used four different piano libraries. I tested each of the four sound sets against each of my improvisations and tried to choose the one that sounded best. As you can imagine, this process was fun for me as a pianist and musical geek. What’s a “piano library” anyway? Well, musicians with a studio as small as mine don’t have the luxury of a real grand piano. Instead, we use the sounds that a piano makes loaded into a sound library or virtual instrument. There have been dozens or perhaps even hundreds of attempts to capture the sound of a piano in this way. Over the years, I’ve had many of these available to me. Some have come and gone. A few are good in a mix, but not so great as a solo instrument. These four all are touted as meticulous recordings of fine instruments. ## Even geekier stuff… For each piano library, I created a series of each octave (7 different pitches) of “D” across the standard 88-keys of a piano. The velocity (speed of striking the key) ranged from 12 to 127 (on a scale of 127). This is intended as a simple way of isolating the sample sets through a large portion of the keyboard (without playing every single pitch and velocity which would be a nightmare to listen to). In addition, I also selected an extract from the end of the first improvisation (“Scared“) and let it play against each of the four libraries. I removed all reverb and other effects (including EQ) from the instruments so that — as much as possible — you only hear the sound of the piano samples. I set the levels of each instrument to hit -1.2 on their individual track level and selected instruments as similar as possible. This included a single mic set (“close”), sustain resonance and pedal noise on, key noise off, etc. The velocity curve was a flat 45-degree angle (i.e., none of the incoming MIDI velocities were altered). As always, I appreciate getting your feedback. Do you use one of these piano libraries? Or maybe you have questions about the details I neglected to mention in this rundown of the comparison? Please leave your comments below. A comparison of Ivory, Hammersmith, Walker 1955, and Ravenscroft piano libraries Click To Tweet ## Synthogy Ivory (7-foot grand) At one time, Ivory was considered by many to be the piano library to beat. And Synthogy has continued to release additional or updated sounds for their virtual instrument. In fact, for many years it was my go-to piano sound. (Examples include “A Minor Thing” and many other recordings.) It’s still a good sample set, but I did not find it as useful and convincing as some of the others. Synthogy Ivory still stands up well after all these years in the virtual instrument world Click To Tweet While recording Interdependence Suite, I tested each of my eight improvisations against the three instruments recorded for this library. While they were fine when I listened in isolation, they seemed a bit harsh and distant compared to the other three libraries I tested. As you can hear, this obviously a piano sound when heard alone. The dynamic range is good, but not as compelling as some of the other libraries. Some of the octaves and dynamics seem unconvincing to me. Again, heard on its own, we can easily tell that it’s the sound of a piano. And the foot releasing from the sustain pedal is part of what adds to a basic sense of being right there. But the instrument tone is a bit strident even before the highest dynamics. Nevertheless, it’s on the “Butterfly Effect 1” track (complete _with_ reverb now). ## Embertone 1955 Steinway When Embertone released their Walker 1955 Steinway, I expected it to be my new best option for recording. The description of the sampling process and instrument options sounded too good to be true. (The download of all the microphone options took several days on my slow internet.) I did choose it for two of the tracks on the Suite. The Walker 1955 is very tweakable. I appreciate the concept of dedicated staccato samples, but have yet to use them in a recording. If you want a single-mic set piano library with lots of ways to manipulate the setup quickly in the interface, this is a fun starting point. Piano sound tweakers will enjoy Embertone Walker 1955 Steinway Click To Tweet In order to match the 1955 with other instruments, I had to load two Embertone sample sets. By the time these were played simultaneously, Kontakt (the Native Instruments engine that both this piano library and the Hammersmith rely on) would sometimes become overloaded. Because the Hammersmith has the dual-mic setup built into their instrument, no such issues occurred there. Notice the instrument resonance in the lowest and highest octave. Whether this is “good” or not will depend on your style of music. It’s okay for solo piano, but the lack of similar resonance in the inner octaves leaves me curious about the sampling methods and mic positioning. I have the sense of playing a piano with this library. It’s a beautiful rendition of a piano. Yet, I’m longing for some closeness that seems to be missing from the sound (especially when moving away from the center octaves). There _is_ a sort of nostalgic sound that lent itself to “Butterfly Effect 2”. ## VI Labs Ravenscroft 275 Unlike the 1955 and Hammersmith, this instrument loads in UVI Falcon or UVI Workstation. The Ravenscroft is a deep instrument with a massive variety of settings including four mic positions, sustain pedal and sympathetic resonances, lots of pedal noises and options, and so on. Even after many recording sessions with it, I’m sure that I’ve only touched the surface of the tweakability of this virtual instrument. VI Labs have done an excellent job with the Ravenscroft 275 piano Click To Tweet It’s essential to switch the polyphony from “Def” (for default) to “Max” (for maximum). Until I added this setting, the voice stealing (pitches dropping out even though they should have still been decaying) was disconcerting and very unmusical even in sections that were not particularly dense. Initial load times for Falcon with Ravenscroft selected are longer than any of the other libraries tested. Though not as intimate as the Hammersmith, the Ravenscroft has a very beautiful sound. Add to this all of the sonic variables available and you have a wonderful sample library. This piano library is highly playable right “out of the box”, too. The dynamic range and resonance are authentic especially in the lower and upper registers. There is some strident character to some of the higher dynamics. Though a bit muddy in the low-mid end, this piano library is very playable. The sound is convincing and if you don’t like what you hear, it’s likely that you can find the setting to improve it. I’m certain that I’ll use Ravenscroft again. Here it is on “Butterfly Effect 3”. ## Soniccouture Hammersmith Pro I’ve already reviewed this piano library once. Refer to that (by clicking this paragraph) if you want the details. Hammersmith Pro is still my favorite piano virtual instrument Click To Tweet I continue to find this to be one of the most convincing, intimate, and versatile piano sounds for use in digital recording. The nuance in the sound and sense of “being there” are truly wonderful. I’m certain that I’ll be using this piano library again in the near future. The dynamic range is authentic and dramatic. There is resonance and lovely audio trails across the entire piano range. I normally use a different response curve for this instrument, but even with a flat velocity response, the Hammersmith holds up well to the other pianos. Thus, it was selected for two tracks on Interdependence Suite, including “Butterfly Effect 4”. ### Please share! ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * One of the choices I made early in the process of composing “Earth” was to include choirs and voices. ## Human Voices First came metal and wood. (See my previous post here for that story.) But I intuitively knew that I wanted human voices. Having written and reflected on this piece, I now know that their role in this music is twofold: bringers of destruction and bringers of hope. We human beings are such a mixed bag. Sometimes, we do so much that’s creative and upbuilding. Other times, we are so destructive. That’s certainly the case with how we’ve treated the earth. ## The Earth Now, a wise person will say: “But you’re writing about the element earth, not the planet.” I decided to compose from inspirations of both of these. In fact, I find that they intermingle easily and deeply in my mind. First, there’s the element. Think “soil”, “ground”, or “earthy”. I love the feel of rich soil under my feet and under my fingernails. It’s beautiful. Still, I can’t help but extend from this elemental earth to The Earth which is the source of soil and many other good things. Even more, when I think of ground, grounding, grounded, the connection with The Earth is powerful as well. One only has to step outside in order to get a sense of how The Earth supports and upholds us. ## Back to Voices With or without words, we can sing our connection with earth and The Earth. We ground ourselves — preferably on earth — in order to vocalize. That groundedness inspires many of our songs. Though earth (elemental and the planet) is the source of so much nourishment, we have often destroyed it. Our overuse, clearcutting, pollution, and other forms of devastation often seem rampant. ## Be Better On the flip side, people are so often a source of hope. When we care for earth and The Earth, it often brings out the best in us. These and many other thoughts and inspirations will be what I am trying to capture in “Earth”. It’s elemental. ### Please share! Lots of people are streaming it; I’ve performed the songs live several times; and fans are loving it. Plus, I’m releasing a new album. Read on to learn about it. ## Radio I’m really excited to tell you that I was interviewed on a local radio station. Lee Rayburn of WHCU turned out to be a wonderful music fan and interviewer. Listen by clicking the play button below. Live music is so much fun. Listen… Click To Tweet As I said in that interview, I’m releasing an album of live versions of the songs from Dream This. In fact… ## LiveSongs – the live versions of the 11 songs from #DreamThis Here it is: “LiveSongs”. The live versions of the songs from Dream This are here for your listening enjoyment. Thanks for your support! ## Naked Dreams In case you missed it, my first live performance of the songs from “Dream This” was livestreamed. You can still view it online. Here are a few highlights to give you a feel for that “Naked Dreams” live gig. I called it “naked” because it was just a guitar and my voice; no amplifier, no effects pedals, no microphone. ## ### Please share! When you click on the links in this story, you’ll learn more about one of the songs I wrote about dreaming. These are not part of DreamState, but they do show how often this subject comes up in my tracks. Daydreams and night-dreams can be a huge inspiration. In the DreamState series, you’ll see how inspiring it is from many different vantage points. ## More to come Check back here in the coming weeks. There will be more about dreaming and about the music they have inspired. If you don’t mind, please share the webstory above with your friends. Your sharing is the best way for others to learn about my music and stories. Thanks! And thank you for your support. I look forward to sharing DreamState with you! ### Please share! Their stories backwards And their chroniclers misled. In the aftermath of reason, We perhaps abandon them Or can, throughout our lifetime, Puzzle over all they hold. Parables and how we take them Are but a simple mirror held Out before our features: Broken, And misshapen forms. Fear is such a dread companion. How its judgements misconstrue What our savior wants for every Fearful soul, as yet unsure. Through our doubt and dread And fear, much as we are able, We embrace both our belief And our doubt in need of grace. ~ spontaneously composed (improvised) by Stan Stewart ~ Copyright © 2025 by Stan Stewart and muz4now, inc. Meditation Suite 2 – Beyond Silence

Many years ago, I created a form of meditation for myself that involved toning and movement. It was my go-to way to meditate for well over a decade. Then, I stopped practicing it. I don’t remember why. I do find nature sounds (the real ones, please) or mellow music are very helpful when I meditate. Recently, I noticed that the music I was using for this was not working for me any more. So, I began to write some meditative music for myself. Meditation Suite 2 – four tracks of prayerful contemplation Click To Tweet ## Unsilent Silence It’s autumn here and I always find this season inspiring. Using that inspiration along with my interest in having something that might help my own meditation, I composed and recorded. Eventually, I needed to focus on some other projects, but afterwards I returned to this one. Fortunately, I think some of these musical recordings came out well enough to share with you. Initially, I set out to create a whole album of meditative music. Though I ran out of time to record a full album, I’m presenting a suite (or EP as some call these) starting with “SeaSong Waves”. Some people prefer to have their meditation accompanied by music Click To Tweet ## Meditative Videos My father is a retired minister, so I grew up a P.K. (preacher’s kid). Prayer is familiar to me, but this “Purposefully Purple…” kind is new. I’ve always found infatuation (being overly attracted to something — usually unhealthy) to be a distraction from meditating. So, when I was naming the tracks, “Not Infatuated” came to mind easily. ## Set Your Meditation to Medium “Medium Meditation” rounds out the four tracks in this suite. (This is one of those titles that popped out of nowhere. In other words, your guess is as good as mine…) ## WebStory Here’s the web-stories version of this blog post. Your Album Release – Avoid My Mistakes
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * ## Your Album Release When you listen to music, do you ever ponder how much went into making the recording and getting you to listen to it? At first glance, the process may seem simple. But an album release is anything but simple. Most of what I’ll say in this series of blog posts could also apply to a single release. These days, I know that many are saying the single is the way to go, that the album is dead. Yet, everyone from Taylor Swift to Michelle Qureshi continues to release them. I’d call that “still alive”. But I’ll leave the single vs. album debate up to you for now. Decide if you want to release a bundle or song. Either way, if you are not with a label, you have work to do. And a lot of it can be tons of fun. Here’s your chance to NOT make the mistakes I did with my album release. Click To Tweet ## Avoid My Mistakes Though I’ll offer everything that worked for me during my recent album release, much of what I can do in this series of posts is help you avoid my mistakes. It only took me a few days to begin to realize all the things I missed out on during the release cycle. And this album took me over two years to create. Let that sink in for a second. What I’ll offer here will be targeted for “indie” or “DIY” musicians and bands. And don’t be fooled: DIY is anything but “yourself”. You will be engaging with everyone from consultants to fans if you want your album to be a success. Indie really means DIT (doing it together). So, stay tuned. Over the next few weeks, this will become a punch list of things to check in order to complete your album release process. As you can imagine, I can’t promise that every possible angle will be covered. What I can say for certain is that you will have a chance to complete the things I missed out on. So, get your paper or app to-do list ready. Your album release checklist. #IndieMusic Click To Tweet ## The List Eventually, every line in this list will be clickable. You’ll be able to skip around to the sections that challenge you the most or the part of the process you’re working through. Or better yet: walk through all of them, one at a time. Here we go: * budgeting * funding * inspiration * music arranging * music recording, mixing, and mastering * marketing * getting your music release heard * protecting your investment ### Please share! My wife, Alison, and I went to see Jessie Ware in Philly last night. She played “Free Yourself” to close the evening and it was absolutely euphoric. Live music is the absolute best…except for my music project, because I’m terrible at it.

They could have been a neighbor. Their parents may be one yet. What good do we think our thoughts and prayers will do for them now? If our prayer is for forgiveness, do our actions speak as loud as words. The alarm went out in time, but nineteen were murdered or maimed. How long does this go on ‘til we recognize our hearts must change? Press your eyes to the glass and see the pain living inside. Parents, siblings, all relations must see we can make a tribe. ~ 2 of 4 verses improvised in a song after learning of the children dead or injured by mass gun violence on August 26, 2025. ~ Copyright © 2025 by Stan Stewart and muz4now, inc. ### Please share! It looks like good news to me. ## Art and Freedom As soon as I read Warner’s blog post and then the “Freedom” website, I was inspired. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted my music to be for the betterment of humanity. This seems like a great opportunity to make it so. So, I’m organizing a piano improvisation concert. The first round of art events by Fall of Freedom will take place on November 21-22. I chose Friday, the 21st and plans are underway. Improvisation is the ideal content for me. As you know, I see improv as a high art form. Just as importantly, its spontaneity means that the connection between “the moment” and the music is never more apparent. In this case, that moment will be about whoever happens to gather on that Friday night. Update: there is now a plan to livestream this concert. Connect here: https://youtube.com/live/3KlEQxJpjbY?feature=share ## Community Inspired Improv I hope that some of my friends will join me. And I’m clear that the piano improv will be my expression whether that’s two people or two hundred. Because I’m an improviser, I don’t know exactly how the concert will go. Somehow, I will ask people for the single word that best conveys what freedom means to them. Maybe I’ll ask other questions, but only time will tell. Obviously, I won’t be publishing a setlist. It will truly be improvised and created in the moment. Be part of the inspiration to seek freedom. Join us if you are able. ## First of Freedom At home, I’ve improvised on the piano many times. Dozens of those I’ve recorded as parts of albums, EPs/suites, and singles. I’ve created individual improvisations in celebrations, ceremonies, and retreat settings. But this will be the first time I’ve performed a full concert of piano improvisations. I don’t know if I’m more nervous about the performance or about losing our freedoms. It doesn’t matter. Putting these two loves of mine — improvisation and freedom — feels like a grand way to share with my community and the world. ### Please share! Yet they keep showing up on my tracks… ## Back Down the Road a Bit About a year ago, I started to release a series of four albums in the DreamState series: Dreams, Liminal Space, Lucid Dreaming, and Awakening. At that time (and still to this day), I was deeply focused on the inspiration from dreams. Hopefully, some of that shone through the tracks that I wrote. At the same time, I pushed myself to learn and use the music technology available to me. Some of that is pretty boring and geeky. But I will enjoy sharing these bits of banjo and guitar tech with you today. I think they’re really fun. Revisiting the #DreamState albums for music and technology fun Click To Tweet ## DreamState Quartet ### “DreamState: Awakening” releases to music streams everywhere ### For The Love Of DreamState ### DreamState – to accompany your dreaming ### Dreaming is not just what happens while you sleep ## Guitar Evolution As I’ve matured as a musician, I continue to focus more on the piano (and keyboard). I’m not really a guitarist though I used to play one for the portability. My shift away from guitar means I’m really appreciating the great virtual guitars available. On “Lucid Bossa Nova”, I featured a great sounding Evolution Steel Strings by Orange Tree Samples. Orange Tree always does an excellent job of sampling instruments. Plus, I’m accustomed to their interface. Check out the animation showing where the strings are being held down. Music technology offers creators new ways to include instruments in their music Click To Tweet ## It’s not all banjos and guitars Not all virtual instruments have flashy animation. Some just sound good. I’d say that’s the case with Tina Guo cello by CineSamples. This VI has been around for a while, but still holds up fairly well. I used this cello side-by-side with RealGuitar “Classic” (aka classical) from Music Lab on the track Morning’d Better Come. Music Lab put some nice touches in this VI including the animated guitar image. Cellos and banjos and guitars … oh my! Click To Tweet ## Banjos R Us I think the banjo sounds so cool. In addition to several songs that include real, live banjo played on them, I have just as many with virtual banjos. Plus, I’ve already done a comparison of three virtual banjos. Please read and hear it here. The sound of the banjo can create a story in the mind of the listener Click To Tweet ## From Banjo to Guitar Now, I’ll shift back from banjo to guitar. It’s possible that I may have saved the best for last. Ample Sound makes excellent banjo and guitar (and other) VIs. Above, you saw and heard their banjo. In “a day in the recording studio of an indie musician” I shared a video of their China Dongxiao (flute). Now for one of their incredible metal guitars. They named this one Hellrazer and for good reasons. I did not use any tricks to create the introduction to “Be You” using only this guitar. With nine strings, I had plenty to work with. Check it out. In some tiny blaze or gigantic bonfire we would burn these bits of tattered paper. I guess that we imagined this burning could make the pain disappear or the fear dissipate. Though this imagining seems perfectly normal, its outer workings were never perfected. _(These days,_ _I live on beautiful farmland._ _As happens on_ _any homestead_ _we often have bits ofbrush, twigs, unused or dilapidated lumber, and prior year’s Christmas trees_ _that collect in a pile._ _At many junctures_ _during the warmer seasons,_ _we talk about inviting the_ _neighbors over_ _to enjoy a bonfire._ _Like the creatives_ _we are, we procrastinate_ _about offering these invitations_ _until one day_ _the brush pile becomes_ _too much to bear.)_ Tonight, I look into the bonfire I’ve made: its flickering flare illuminates and shades. Each fiery light is met in equal measure by the colors of the night. Then, spiraling for a moment, the raging redness raises its smoke, spark, and ash into the sepulcher of the heavens and sculpts there — not a cleansing of the old but — a forging of what’s yet to be. ~ spontaneously (improvised, unedited) created by Stan Stewart ~ Copyright © 2018 by Stan Stewart and muz4now, inc. Nothing wasted, but… Well, things didn’t turn out. ## Waste Not Want Not The 11-minute piece I had composed was not what I wanted. I had the sense that I had wasted a lot of time writing, mixing, and mastering this music. Well, let me take a step back. My spouse is one of my best critics. She is also a very kind and sensitive person. We were on a road trip and I asked if I could play the most recent iteration of this opus. She said, yes. Never one to waste words, I anticipated listening to every single one she said. Well, she had to take a breath before she offered her feedback. I knew that was a part of her response. (Again, she never was unkind.) ## Step Into the Driver’s Seat She nuanced her comments with, “You know that violin part at the beginning…” But I could tell she was not enamored with the piece. Eventually, she said that if I was going for a downer on _the earth_ this might fit. But if I wanted to offer any sense of _hope_ , she could not find it. I told her there was a major chord at the end intended to give the sense of hopefulness. The unsaid bits were not wasted on me. Obviously, I had expected too much out of a single chord. It was not a hopeful piece. It was an indictment of the human race regarding the earth. ## Wasted Opportunity After we returned home, I emailed my co-composers on this project: Edward Givens, John M. Davis, and Terry MR (Purple Rhapsody). Each of them were tender and kind with their responses. “Hey, keep whatever you created… you can repurpose it.” And thankfully, I agree. For now, I’m thinking of the first attempt as “Prologue to Earth”. The next iteration is much more hopeful. But in a way, it’s more demanding. The new anthem for earth demands that we waste nothing. We do not have time, atmosphere, nor degrees (temperature nor separation) that can be wasted. ### Please share! 5 Tools to Amp Up Your Keyboard Rig

When it comes to keyboard gear unless you have boatloads of cash, one of those will be money. That means you’ll need to make the best choice possible because the next upgrade could be a long way off. Take your digital piano and its amp to the next level with these 5 tips. #MusicianTips Click To Tweet ## Which Amp? Some of you reading this will be asking this reasonable question, “Why would you start with the amp? Why not the keyboard itself?” Honestly, having played dozens of different electronic keyboards, the amp/speaker combo is so crucial. In some ways, it may be more important than the ax. Plus, these days, you can replace the sounds with computer-based sounds such as a Native Instruments’ Kontakt instance on your computer. Of course, if you can drag a full sound system to each gig, you’ll get the best sound. But these are expensive _and_ bulky, so quite impractical for many performances. You’re going to want something compact, versatile, and with enough inputs to allow you or — let’s say — a duo play and sing. This is why my favorite portable amp is the Roland BA-330. Besides being compact (about 30 pounds), the speakers are stereo, it has a minimal mixer, reverb, anti-feedback, and battery-powered option. The minor downsides to this mini-sound system are that the highs (upper frequencies) could be carried better by the speakers, the EQ (equalizer) may be inadequate for some, and there is no BlueTooth. There are plenty of inputs and outputs (including the ability to have external active speakers from the line outs or stereo links) for solo or duo acts and the standard AA battery operation allows you to play those outdoor gigs. Of course, there are not very many battery-operated keyboards, so that will be another challenge. For very small venues, I use just the BA-330. For medium-sized halls, I use the BA-330 as my monitor and bring a set of active speakers to plug into the line outs. ## Which Balance? I’ve been annoyed by a few of the amplification options I’ve used over the years because of their lack of stereo sound. This is one of the selling points of the BA-330. Even though it’s size will limit the stereo spread, this is a big boon to keyboardists. Many piano or other keyboard sounds are significantly enhanced when heard on both sides of the stereo image. It also gives options for panning other sounds plugged in via an external mixer. (The internal mixer does not have pan or balance controls.) The first two channels on the built-in mixer are mono channels with mic or line inputs. The inputs for channels 3/4 and 5/6 are stereo line inputs. You’ll want to use one of these stereo channels for your keyboard. Remember to turn off the built-in effects on the channels where you plug in the keyboard. The reverb, delay, chorus, and other effects in most digital keys will be dozens of times higher quality and controllability than the very simple delay/reverb on-board the BA-330. ## Which Tone? Most keyboards have sounds that are already equalized (the frequencies of the sound are balanced or tweaked) enough to be workable on most sound systems. However, not every venue has the same acoustics, so being able to have some EQ controls is very helpful. Some keyboards include very intricate abilities to adapt the tone of the sounds. But this can be time-consuming especially if you use multiple sounds — maybe a piano sound for most songs, but an eclectic piano or an organ for just a few. This means that having EQ on your amp will be a faster cure when you need to tune the sound for the room. While many amps including the BA-330 have limited tone controls, a little something is better than nothing. ## Which Ax? I can’t outline everything you need to consider when picking your actual keyboard. You can find every sort of digital piano or synthesizer in nearly all the price ranges you can imagine. To make it even more tricky, what’s important to one performer will be completely extraneous to another. So, I’ll just mention a few things you’ll want to consider when finding your first or next keyboard: * Do you want or need **built-in sounds** _or_ do you already know that you’ll use **computer-generated patches** for your gigs? * If you decide on built-in sounds, make sure to **audition all of the sounds** you’ll need for your material. * And especially if you are using the computer for your sounds, ensure that the keyboard has at least one **MIDI output**. * Check out the **action of the keys**. Piano players will want weighted keys. If possible, compare it with other keyboard instruments or a real piano (if that’s your main instrument). * Other things to consider: * Do you need battery operation? These keyboards are fairly rare. * Does the unit require a special power adapter? Is it included? Does it have a “wall wart” that will take extra space on your power strip? * How heavy is it? Can you carry it? * Does the price include a protective case? If you’re gigging, this will be essential. * What other accessories do you need to go with this keyboard? Are they included? ## What Quality? Speaking of accessories, you’re at least going to need a sustain pedal and audio cables (to go from the keyboard to your amp). My advice: get the best you can afford. If possible, bring a spare pedal and cables to each gig. Even with decent quality in these accessories, they can fail over time. #MusicianTips – Every component of your digital piano rig can make or break your gig setup. Click To Tweet If you play lots of places with slick floors, you may also want to consider a way to keep the sustain pedal from slipping. There are several solutions for this including gaffer tape or some reasonably priced commercial solutions like Pedal-Lock. ## Which Score? Unless you have every part memorized for every song you will ever play, you will need to display your music scores. Due to the portability and backlighting (essential for some underlit clubs and if you play in pit bands), my favorite approach is using an iPad. (You can use alternative software on an Android tablet, but I have no experience with that. Sorry.) Personally, I use the ForScore app for PDF files and Songbook ChordPro for song (chordpro) files. Among the great features of these are the collaboration tools (link with your bandmates, share files via DropBox, and so on). Both of these apps also accept BlueTooth input for page turns. I’m really happy with my AirTurn Duo which I have programmed for forward one page with the right foot pedal and backward one page with the left. In order to hold your tablet, you’ll need a stand. Of course, you could just set your iPad on a traditional music stand. But the better (lower profile and better range of sight) approach is to attach a tablet holder to your mic stand. Some of the best iPad cradles I’ve found are by Hercules. I have used their DG300B which works great. ## What Else in Your Keyboard Rig? As I’ve been writing this post, it’s become clear to me that I’m barely scratching the surface of what you’ll want to know in order to get your keyboard rig set up. Still, I hope that these pointers provide a starting point for gigging with a digital keyboard. As always, please keep the conversation going by offering your pointers or questions in the comments here. Thank you for reading. ### Please share! You’ve already budgeted for your album release based on the previous post in this series. Once you determine how much you can contribute to the amount you estimated, it’s time determine how you’ll get the rest of the money. (This is the third in a series of posts to help you not make the same mistakes I did in the album release process. Click here to start at the beginning.) Set up a crowdfund early in the album release cycle Click To Tweet ## Crowdfunding as a forethought No matter what other sources of funds you have, I recommend setting up a crowdfund first. Besides being a common practice for new albums, the worst that can happen is that you’d get no contributions. Don’t make it an afterthought. Just do it. Set up rewards before your initial post. Make sure that you can afford them. And by “afford” I mean both in terms of your time and your money. Then, prepare your rewards for each contribution as soon as people give. That way, you aren’t in a crunch at release time. There will be _plenty_ to do later in the process. Post an appropriate part of your budgeting spreadsheet among the early updates in your crowdfunding. It’s best to be upfront with your fans and supporters. Contact your best fans and friends directly to see if they can donate to your album crowdfund. The more personal contact you can make, the better. Continue to interact with the contributors and keep sharing the link to your campaign so that you’ll get new donors. Interact regularly with your crowdfund contributors Click To Tweet ## Crowdfunding as engagement Sites like BandCamp have turned crowdfunding for musicians into a way to keep your fans engaged. This doesn’t mean you have to choose ~~PledgeMusic~~ over other platforms, but ~~check out their pages of information about creating community~~. Besides getting you the money you need to make the album, crowdfunding is a great way to network. You may even discover who your real fans and superfans are by virtue of the campaign. Be creative with every step in the crowdfund. The initial page and video; the rewards; the updates; and even the payout of the rewards are great opportunities to use your quirks or niche to make the campaign more interesting. ## Keep current Follow your crowdfunding platform’s blog and setup a Google alert for new posts on best crowdfunding practices. These can be very helpful in keeping you both creative and honest as your campaign progresses. Above all else, _choose rewards you can deliver on time_. Your worst press ever could be a crowdfund that failed to deliver. Next up: inspiration Should you release an album for charity? Click To Tweet > One side note: think long and hard about making your album a “charity album”. In hindsight, a better approach might be to say something like, “The first $200 made on this album will go to charity.” Having all proceeds go to charity ties you into never making any money off of your hard work. It’s very altruistic, but ponder whether it’s fiscally going to make sense for you. > > If you do decide to donate all of your proceeds, you will want a crowdfund even more. Everything you spend on a charity album release will be strictly out-of-pocket and will never be recouped. ### Please share! He’s a dog that we adopted several years ago. These days, he is aging alongside us. Which is wonderful. He has some idiosyncrasies. So do Anita and I. And like most pets, Scout thinks he’s the master. Some days, he is. To me, in certain regards, he’s a sort of mentor monk or bodhisattva. For example, he “taught me” to nap by simply demonstrating how perfectly okay naps are. I know he’s a dog. (And it has not slipped past me that if you flip the letters in dog, it becomes god.) Scout (aka The Wonder PlayDog) has also appeared on the Virtual Friday Interplay blog. So this is my little video honoring him. (The improvised piano piece was originally created as an accompaniment for a video by my friend Gregory Tapler. Check out his KickStarter for his new photography project: Resilience.) Budgeting for your album release
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * The first mistake in the album release process I want to help you avoid is not having enough money to finish. I promised my album to my fans by a certain date. But I started several steps in the process too late to complete them. The first thing to budget is time. If you don’t allocate enough of that, nothing else will matter. Though you could release an album with zero costs theoretically, I don’t recommend it. In this post of budgeting suggestions, I’ll offer ways to help you not make the same mistakes as me. ## Who Does What? How many of the required “jobs” will you do yourself? If you’re in a band, what are the strengths of each member that they can bring to the release process? At the same time, you have to ask yourself what will need to be hired out. No matter how good you are at the various tasks — unless you want to take a decade to release an album — it’s likely that you’ll want some help. If you want the help to be good, hire professionals. (That means you have to pay them.) No matter what, do what works for you. You need to adapt your music cycle to _you_ (either individually or as a band). That’s why I’ll offer more questions than advice. ## Questions for Budgeting Here are some of the areas you will probably need to ponder regarding hires and therefore budgeting. (There’s more detail on several of these coming up in this series.) Questions to ask yourself when budgeting as a freelancer Click To Tweet ### Publicity * **Marketing** /PR: You should budget something for this unless you have a million or more _engaged_ fans on social media _plus_ lots of connections with music bloggers and radio DJs. If you decide to try to do much or all of the marketing yourself, budget as much time for that as for your practice and recording sessions. * Another note about **advertising** : no matter how tempting, don’t go for cheap ads, especially Facebook. If there’s enough interest (_please leave a comment_), I’ll write a detailed post about how those ads only work if you spend more and more on Facebook ads. * Do you have a **website**? Have you registered your desired domain? Is your web design already created? Have you verified the SEO on your site? Again, if you answered “no”, you need to budget for these. If you need a free site to get started, try wordpress.com. * Do you have a **music player** for your web site? (Beware Soundcloud due to company stability and too-easy downloading.) Are you on BandCamp? Do you need to upgrade to BandCamp Pro? * Are you going to create music **videos**? Teaser videos? These are great for publicity of many kinds. Who will create, record, and edit these? ### The Songs * Submissions/**distribution:** I don’t know of any DIY artists/bands who are trying to distribute their own music. You will need to select and hire a distributor. I recommend DistroKid. After sub-optimal experiences with other distributors, I’ve never had any issues with DistroKid and their annual fee (vs. per-release fees). Other distributors include CDBaby and TuneCore. I recently heard about Music Kickup which has a free distribution tier. (I can’t speak to their quality.) * **Arranging** : Who will be doing the musical arrangements of your music/songs? * If you’re doing your own arranging, recording, mixing and mastering, do you have all the **software/plugins/sounds** you need? Virtual instruments? Sound libraries? Effect plugins? If you don’t already have these, do you know how to select the ones you’ll need? ### Recording * Do you have a professional **DAW** (e.g., ProTools, Reaper, Cakewalk SONAR, Logic Pro)? I’ve watched friends use consumer software like GarageBand on release recordings, but I don’t recommend it if you want a professional sound. Obviously, you’ll also need a professional audio interface, microphone(s), and instruments. * Can you play all the musical parts yourself? Or do you need to hire **session musicians**? Remember, if you plan to make money from your recording, it’s only right to pay the players. * **Engineering/mixing/mastering** : Do you know the difference between mixing and mastering? How do you set a level and do you have experience doing it? Have you ever tuned a track with EQ? What will you need to do to separate a kick drum from the bass? If you aren’t sure about any of those (which are just examples of 100s of recording techniques), you will need to either learn this trade or hire someone who already knows it. ### And finally… * Now, you need to **research** how much each of the things you need will cost and put it into your accounting software or a spreadsheet. * How much **time** will you need to budget if you do it all yourself? * Where will the **money** come from? More on that in the next post… ### Please share!
