But this time, I changed that up completely. For this release, I used four different piano libraries. I tested each of the four sound sets against each of my improvisations and tried to choose the one that sounded best. As you can imagine, this process was fun for me as a pianist and musical geek. What’s a “piano library” anyway? Well, musicians with a studio as small as mine don’t have the luxury of a real grand piano. Instead, we use the sounds that a piano makes loaded into a sound library or virtual instrument. There have been dozens or perhaps even hundreds of attempts to capture the sound of a piano in this way. Over the years, I’ve had many of these available to me. Some have come and gone. A few are good in a mix, but not so great as a solo instrument. These four all are touted as meticulous recordings of fine instruments. ## Even geekier stuff… For each piano library, I created a series of each octave (7 different pitches) of “D” across the standard 88-keys of a piano. The velocity (speed of striking the key) ranged from 12 to 127 (on a scale of 127). This is intended as a simple way of isolating the sample sets through a large portion of the keyboard (without playing every single pitch and velocity which would be a nightmare to listen to). In addition, I also selected an extract from the end of the first improvisation (“Scared“) and let it play against each of the four libraries. I removed all reverb and other effects (including EQ) from the instruments so that — as much as possible — you only hear the sound of the piano samples. I set the levels of each instrument to hit -1.2 on their individual track level and selected instruments as similar as possible. This included a single mic set (“close”), sustain resonance and pedal noise on, key noise off, etc. The velocity curve was a flat 45-degree angle (i.e., none of the incoming MIDI velocities were altered). As always, I appreciate getting your feedback. Do you use one of these piano libraries? Or maybe you have questions about the details I neglected to mention in this rundown of the comparison? Please leave your comments below. A comparison of Ivory, Hammersmith, Walker 1955, and Ravenscroft piano libraries Click To Tweet ## Synthogy Ivory (7-foot grand) At one time, Ivory was considered by many to be the piano library to beat. And Synthogy has continued to release additional or updated sounds for their virtual instrument. In fact, for many years it was my go-to piano sound. (Examples include “A Minor Thing” and many other recordings.) It’s still a good sample set, but I did not find it as useful and convincing as some of the others. Synthogy Ivory still stands up well after all these years in the virtual instrument world Click To Tweet While recording Interdependence Suite, I tested each of my eight improvisations against the three instruments recorded for this library. While they were fine when I listened in isolation, they seemed a bit harsh and distant compared to the other three libraries I tested. As you can hear, this obviously a piano sound when heard alone. The dynamic range is good, but not as compelling as some of the other libraries. Some of the octaves and dynamics seem unconvincing to me. Again, heard on its own, we can easily tell that it’s the sound of a piano. And the foot releasing from the sustain pedal is part of what adds to a basic sense of being right there. But the instrument tone is a bit strident even before the highest dynamics. Nevertheless, it’s on the “Butterfly Effect 1” track (complete _with_ reverb now). ## Embertone 1955 Steinway When Embertone released their Walker 1955 Steinway, I expected it to be my new best option for recording. The description of the sampling process and instrument options sounded too good to be true. (The download of all the microphone options took several days on my slow internet.) I did choose it for two of the tracks on the Suite. The Walker 1955 is very tweakable. I appreciate the concept of dedicated staccato samples, but have yet to use them in a recording. If you want a single-mic set piano library with lots of ways to manipulate the setup quickly in the interface, this is a fun starting point. Piano sound tweakers will enjoy Embertone Walker 1955 Steinway Click To Tweet In order to match the 1955 with other instruments, I had to load two Embertone sample sets. By the time these were played simultaneously, Kontakt (the Native Instruments engine that both this piano library and the Hammersmith rely on) would sometimes become overloaded. Because the Hammersmith has the dual-mic setup built into their instrument, no such issues occurred there. Notice the instrument resonance in the lowest and highest octave. Whether this is “good” or not will depend on your style of music. It’s okay for solo piano, but the lack of similar resonance in the inner octaves leaves me curious about the sampling methods and mic positioning. I have the sense of playing a piano with this library. It’s a beautiful rendition of a piano. Yet, I’m longing for some closeness that seems to be missing from the sound (especially when moving away from the center octaves). There _is_ a sort of nostalgic sound that lent itself to “Butterfly Effect 2”. ## VI Labs Ravenscroft 275 Unlike the 1955 and Hammersmith, this instrument loads in UVI Falcon or UVI Workstation. The Ravenscroft is a deep instrument with a massive variety of settings including four mic positions, sustain pedal and sympathetic resonances, lots of pedal noises and options, and so on. Even after many recording sessions with it, I’m sure that I’ve only touched the surface of the tweakability of this virtual instrument. VI Labs have done an excellent job with the Ravenscroft 275 piano Click To Tweet It’s essential to switch the polyphony from “Def” (for default) to “Max” (for maximum). Until I added this setting, the voice stealing (pitches dropping out even though they should have still been decaying) was disconcerting and very unmusical even in sections that were not particularly dense. Initial load times for Falcon with Ravenscroft selected are longer than any of the other libraries tested. Though not as intimate as the Hammersmith, the Ravenscroft has a very beautiful sound. Add to this all of the sonic variables available and you have a wonderful sample library. This piano library is highly playable right “out of the box”, too. The dynamic range and resonance are authentic especially in the lower and upper registers. There is some strident character to some of the higher dynamics. Though a bit muddy in the low-mid end, this piano library is very playable. The sound is convincing and if you don’t like what you hear, it’s likely that you can find the setting to improve it. I’m certain that I’ll use Ravenscroft again. Here it is on “Butterfly Effect 3”. ## Soniccouture Hammersmith Pro I’ve already reviewed this piano library once. Refer to that (by clicking this paragraph) if you want the details. Hammersmith Pro is still my favorite piano virtual instrument Click To Tweet I continue to find this to be one of the most convincing, intimate, and versatile piano sounds for use in digital recording. The nuance in the sound and sense of “being there” are truly wonderful. I’m certain that I’ll be using this piano library again in the near future. The dynamic range is authentic and dramatic. There is resonance and lovely audio trails across the entire piano range. I normally use a different response curve for this instrument, but even with a flat velocity response, the Hammersmith holds up well to the other pianos. Thus, it was selected for two tracks on Interdependence Suite, including “Butterfly Effect 4”. ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * ### Like this: Like Loading… ### _More for you_ * * * ### Discover more from Stan Stewart - @muz4now Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email. Certainly, this melting is of love. But more than that, it is a melting in grief. How odd to mourn people unseen, unmet. Yet my anguish is as real as if their dying and suffering were of a dearest love. Strange, too, how these troubling times with the distance created by pandemic isolation and political polarization have also made our whole humanity smaller. It is as if we can no longer ignore the smallness of our existence and the compact planet on which we human beings once thrived. Yes, I am sad. In grief, I hold out my heart to the millions who have died in the wake of this wild year or two. Just as much, I also grieve with every person who has lost someone. It does not matter if it was from the virus or not. Why? Because our grieving and commemorations are traumatized yet again in the face of these deep and sad separations. ~ created spontaneously by Stan Stewart ~ Copyright © 2021 by Stan Stewart and muz4now, inc. Sometimes Making Music Ain’t Easy

But sometimes it ain’t easy. ## Beauty and the Beast There are mountains of reasons to play musical sounds. They start with the joy of connecting to other music makers. And then continue through those cascades to a sense of personal satisfaction (or at least catharsis). For me, another big part of why I make music is that I am compelled to do it. Something in me keeps calling to a particular part of my brain and soul that cannot stop. When I hear that call, the only thing that will keep me from going nutty is to play an instrument, write songs, and sing. ## What’s Driving? But not all of creating music is pushed along by that drive. I play music live and I also create music in a recording studio. Both of these call on me to bring out what I’ve learned over the years. But more than this, these call on me to be vulnerable. Making music is a potentially scary endeavor. I’ve written about this before, but this time, it’s pushed me too far again. I have now attempted to write a commissioned song 5 times. And I can’t get it to how I want it to sound. The real problem is that I’m afraid that the client won’t like the song. Or worse-yet (says my brain), that they won’t like me. ## The Essence of Making Music Obviously, I’m grown up enough and smart enough to know that I don’t control how other people think. Plus, my music and myself are not identical. As much as I feel close to the music I make, it is not all of me. It’s time to drop back into the joy of creating. Making music comes from my soul (but is not my soul itself). Let’s try that again: ~~Sometimes~~ Making Music ~~Ain’t~~ Easy. My Spouse Said She’d Turn This Track OFF
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * My wife is my favorite critic. Even so, I never thought I’d hear her say this. ## You Read That Right That’s correct: she would turn off this track if she heard it on Pandora. (That’s her favorite streaming radio.) Yeah, my spouse would not listen to this one. In her defense, I might do the same. It’s 11-minutes long; has lots of instrument and time changes; and is filled with uncomfortable emotions. It’s that discomfort that is probably the strongest factor. And yet, I know these feelings are real. After all, they are mine. (Please press play and then read on…) ## Off the Track This piece was intended to be my submission for a collaboration between four composers on an album. That project was about the “elements” and my chosen element was _earth_. As I pondered this subject, I veered off the path. Instead of thinking of earth as soil, I kept thinking of _the_ Earth. That led me to my sadness and anger about how we’ve treated our home planet. That’s why this track carries a sense of mourning and rage. Those are understandable given my _actual_ inspiration. However, that was not the _intended_ inspiration. After my spouse’s response, it became clear that I needed to revert to that intention. ## Earth As Inspiration So, I started to ponder gardening, earthing, awe walking, and other things that connect me with earth and earthiness. No more being off the track. Those are a very different kind of inspiration. And that led to one track of four in the album “Elements”. I hope you will be able to hear it soon. No worries for my spouse. She won’t hear “Injustice: Prologue to Earth” on commercial streaming radios. It will only be on Bandcamp, Mirlo, Subvert, and Bandwagon. Please choose one and listen. Better yet, download it. (It’s name-your-price on most of these.) Thanks for listening. Nothing Lacking – Nothing Wasted
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * As you know, I’ve been pondering earth and creating music to match. Nothing wasted, but… Well, things didn’t turn out. ## Waste Not Want Not The 11-minute piece I had composed was not what I wanted. I had the sense that I had wasted a lot of time writing, mixing, and mastering this music. Well, let me take a step back. My spouse is one of my best critics. She is also a very kind and sensitive person. We were on a road trip and I asked if I could play the most recent iteration of this opus. She said, yes. Never one to waste words, I anticipated listening to every single one she said. Well, she had to take a breath before she offered her feedback. I knew that was a part of her response. (Again, she never was unkind.) ## Step Into the Driver’s Seat She nuanced her comments with, “You know that violin part at the beginning…” But I could tell she was not enamored with the piece. Eventually, she said that if I was going for a downer on _the earth_ this might fit. But if I wanted to offer any sense of _hope_ , she could not find it. I told her there was a major chord at the end intended to give the sense of hopefulness. The unsaid bits were not wasted on me. Obviously, I had expected too much out of a single chord. It was not a hopeful piece. It was an indictment of the human race regarding the earth. ## Wasted Opportunity After we returned home, I emailed my co-composers on this project: Edward Givens, John M. Davis, and Terry MR (Purple Rhapsody). Each of them were tender and kind with their responses. “Hey, keep whatever you created… you can repurpose it.” And thankfully, I agree. For now, I’m thinking of the first attempt as “Prologue to Earth”. The next iteration is much more hopeful. But in a way, it’s more demanding. The new anthem for earth demands that we waste nothing. We do not have time, atmosphere, nor degrees (temperature nor separation) that can be wasted. How To Know Which Reviews You Can Trust And Avoid Buyer’s Remorse
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Reviews, by default, are heavily influenced by personal preference. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and so on. However, the two core values that every review must share are accuracy and honesty. ## Personal Preference Let’s briefly expand on what we said above; personal preference has to play a part in any review. The key for the reviewer is not to let personal preference cloud their judgment. Click To Tweet For example, some musicians will tell you that a bass guitar should never have more than four strings. If someone with that opinion was tasked to write a review featuring the best 5-string bass guitars, they couldn’t let their preference downgrade the score of every instrument. So, personal preference is fine, even helpful at times (if you find a reviewer with similar taste to yours), but it must never lose context. ## Are Longer Reviews Always Better? There are a few common misconceptions that people have when it comes to written reviews. One is that longer reviews automatically represent greater knowledge/understanding and authority. Another is that skipping to the end of a lengthy review to check the verdict is a good idea. A review of around 4000 words could be incredibly insightful, but it could also be more filler than substance. There’s no sure way to tell until you start reading and make your own assessment. However, the product in review is the first indicator. If it’s a complex synthesizer like the Waldorf Quantum, it could easily take thousands of words to do it justice. If it’s a clap-on lamp, and you see pages of text, don’t waste your time. That’s a fairly extreme example, but you get the idea. If you do assume that a review is so long that it must have authority and skip to the verdict, you could be making a purchase based on pages of nonsense. When it comes to long-form reviews, it’s best to find sources you trust and stick to them. Sound On Sound produces some fantastic, long-form, technical reviews like this one on the Moog Matriarch. The benefit of a longer review is that it can discuss features/functions in great depth. While that’s perfect for people in the know, readers should keep in mind that sometimes so much detail doesn’t help a novice if they don’t understand it. With that in mind, shorter reviews can accurately review complex products, providing the structure is good. More concise reviews are often the better option if you are new to the product type. ## Review Structure The format of any review is almost as important as the content. Without a clear structure, even the most valuable information will go unread. A review should highlight the most important features of a product and discuss the use of those features in the most likely situations. For example, a keyboard piano has value in the home and on stage, and any review should consider the pros and cons in both domains. An easy way to spot a less authentic review is by the features it chooses to highlight. Click To Tweet If a review spends more time discusses how many colors a product comes in than it does the core specifications, you shouldn’t put too much stock in its opinion. As a short guide, a review should break down the product’s main features, how it is in use, how well it’s made, and a final verdict. The time spent on each section will depend on the overall length of the review. Some reviews go further and split sections into subsections to avoid longer (harder to read) paragraphs. A great example of a site that provides long technical reviews in lots of bite-sized chunks is RTINGS.com. ## Seeing The Positives Or Sales Talk? _Unless a product is genuinely terrible, it likely has something to offer someone._ In many cases, you’ll find that websites don’t spend the same time writing about something if there is nothing good to say about it. However, there are websites that write nothing give nothing but good reviews, and we think of this as sales talk. It’s like going into a car showroom and enquiring about the worst car you can find. Ultimately, the dealership wants to sell the car, and the salesman wants their commission, so the temptation is to sidestep any problems with superficial gimmicks. For example, the gearbox could be about to drop, but as long as it gets you out of the dealership, they might tell you their brother drives the same car and loves it. Or, tell you that they’ve had high interest, and if you don’t buy today, someone else will. Of course, not all salespeople do this, but it’s a dishonest approach. Websites that use similar avoidance tricks are motivated by affiliate link/sales commission. Genuine reviews that also benefit from affiliate links are more interested in an honest approach that leads to long-term readers and long-term commission potential. If something isn’t good enough, a genuine review should say so. But it will also take into account that _good enough_ is different for everyone. For example, a 61-key portable keyboard isn’t good enough for a concert pianist, but it’s perfect for a young beginner. It’s important to spot the difference between seeing the positives and sales talk. ## Don’t Forget About The Price Following on from the positive/sales talk example above, it’s also essential that reviewers keep everything in context with the price. It might be confusing to see a $100 product with a higher rating than a $3000 product, but it’s perfectly normal (and honest). It happens a lot because the cheaper product has lower expectations. In that sense, it’s easier for a cheap product to over-deliver and an expensive product to under-deliver. For example, a Nord Piano 5 is clearly a better instrument than a Casio CT-S1. But they have different target consumers — professional at $3,500 vs. beginner at $200 — and the score should reflect value for money and how well it serves the target user. Image from Nord’s website Honest reviews should not be scared to score a budget product higher than an expensive one, but they should explain why. If a review doesn’t judge products in this way, then consumers could be missing out on potentially great buys. In summary, reviews should be honest, cover the substantial features more than the superficial ones, and keep everything in context. Hopefully, this helps you find reviews that you can trust and avoid the ones you can’t. > This guest post is by James Nugent who is a writer, multi-instrumentalist, and synth enthusiast passionate about music from Bebop to Hip-Hop. As a musician, he has read countless gear reviews, both good and bad. As a writer, he aims to use that experience to deliver helpful and honest review content. When we are at war internally or externally, there is no way for us to engage in our fullness. On the other hand, when we are at peace, all things are possible. ## Interdependence If you’ve been reading my blog (especially my recent poems), you know that I have been thinking about interdependence. There are three poems with “interdependence” in the title: * Interdependence Day (the “butterfly effect”) * Interdependence Day 2 (peace) * Interdependence Day 3 (kindness) I see interdependence in our relationships with each other, self, and the whole world. Find interdependence in the world of art… #piano #improv Click To Tweet ## Connection Basically, we human beings rely on each other. We also are deeply connected to the earth and to the other creatures that roam in our ecosphere. As you can imagine (if you know me at all), I’ve turned this into music. In fact, there are eight improvised piano pieces related to this pondering of interdependence. And they are known as “Interdependence Suite”. ## Sweet Suite What does interdependence mean to you? Where do you encounter it in your daily life? Here are my piano improvisation outpourings about and inspired by interdependence. Thanks for listening. (In the next week or two, I’ll provide some geekier explanations of why the pianos in this suite sound so different.) ### Please share! Not what should, or might or always had, but what did. Make that list. Be honest, even if it surprises you. Keep the list with you this month. Add to it when it happens. Train yourself to notice. Then ask your self today, how can I arrange my life to get more of those heart leaps in it?” > > My first impulse was to take several days to develop my list and mold it into a piece of prose that would explain _why_ these things make my heart leap and how I could design my year to engage with these sorts of things. But then, I sat down with pen and paper. I remembered that I am an improvisation artist. I recalled that my art is poetry (and music) created spontaneously. And this is what I wrote. New life. What is this insecurity, This doubt? The danger lies In remaining silent. Speak. And the fear is exposed, Made vulnerable to The light of day. That is the way That it cannot Survive. Yet even thinking of Being overt about Fear Brings up more Trepidation. This is the sinister Circle that it Creates when allowed To fester: Fear coupled with Cowardice kills Relationship. So, speak it I will. I will say, “I am afraid.” I will be vulnerable And while shaking In my guts, I will Know that I am Being true To both Me and you. ~ spontaneously created by Stan Stewart ~ Copyright 2014 by muz4now, inc. But not everyone. For us, there are music videos. ## JBK Kindness is always underrated. That’s why artists like me continue to remind ourselves and our audience about it. What can you do today to be kind to someone else? Do you see the kindness in this video? How do the images inform what you hear? In any case, thanks for listening and watching. Will you please do me the kindness of sharing this music video? Click To Tweet ## Some Kind of Kindness Meanwhile, I sometimes get carried away with being a recovering serious person. When that happens, I may occasionally get too playful. I didn’t really need the play on words in the original title (“Bee Kind”). But it’s out there in the world now, so I’m stuck with it. The point is the kindness, not the play on words. So in the music video, I left the extra “e” off. Of course, if you’d like you to listen to the whole piano improvisation (plus), please do!
To our dismay, when she tried to rise She fell again. There was much confusion in her words Once the emergency team arrived It was hard to know if she’d been in a previous accident And whether it has been a day or a month ago My heart kept seeking a way to reach hers To say that in someway I am just like her That I love her and want her to be perfectly well I suspect that on the outside I looked like nothing more than a bumbling Good Samaritan Not even able to keep her From falling the second time I was deeply relieved and impressed When the paramedic convinced her To be taken to the ER The fact that she was headed In the wrong direction To make it to that destination mall She so deeply longed to find Was the final clincher For all we helpers And the dear woman Fallen at the side of the road ~ spontaneously created by Stan Stewart ~ after the scene of this real incident ~ copyright 2015 by muz4now, inc. and Stan Stewart ### Please share! (See my previous post here for that story.) But I intuitively knew that I wanted human voices. Having written and reflected on this piece, I now know that their role in this music is twofold: bringers of destruction and bringers of hope. We human beings are such a mixed bag. Sometimes, we do so much that’s creative and upbuilding. Other times, we are so destructive. That’s certainly the case with how we’ve treated the earth. ## The Earth Now, a wise person will say: “But you’re writing about the element earth, not the planet.” I decided to compose from inspirations of both of these. In fact, I find that they intermingle easily and deeply in my mind. First, there’s the element. Think “soil”, “ground”, or “earthy”. I love the feel of rich soil under my feet and under my fingernails. It’s beautiful. Still, I can’t help but extend from this elemental earth to The Earth which is the source of soil and many other good things. Even more, when I think of ground, grounding, grounded, the connection with The Earth is powerful as well. One only has to step outside in order to get a sense of how The Earth supports and upholds us. ## Back to Voices With or without words, we can sing our connection with earth and The Earth. We ground ourselves — preferably on earth — in order to vocalize. That groundedness inspires many of our songs. Though earth (elemental and the planet) is the source of so much nourishment, we have often destroyed it. Our overuse, clearcutting, pollution, and other forms of devastation often seem rampant. ## Be Better On the flip side, people are so often a source of hope. When we care for earth and The Earth, it often brings out the best in us. These and many other thoughts and inspirations will be what I am trying to capture in “Earth”. It’s elemental. From Nothing – the sound of nothingness and reverie

Even as I type these words, I have no idea if this is the right thing to do. It’s been a weird ride, though with plenty of inspiration and discovery along the way. ## Something Out Of Nothing The first thing I noticed when would start each of these compositions is that my usual crutches were missing. I’m so used to beginning with an idea or from a specific (either inspirational or musical) concept. Since I was intentionally avoiding these, I often had to wait and see what would come up. No wonder this album took so many months to complete — even though the final release seems quite simple in many ways. Generally, I would warn anyone trying this to remember that creating from nothing does not mean that everything has to be random. It also does not require that every sound seems to come from the void. Since I was in the experimental stage, these pieces still have a sense of that randomness and coming from pure emptiness. Track one is “Guitar Nothing” which I created with a combination of real and virtual guitars. Everyone loves a guitar song. Right? #Listen to the sounds of nothing on Stan Stewart’s new album. Click To Tweet ## Get Your Nothing Running “Oh, Nothing” typifies this album if any track does. It’s a curious combination of historic, Eastern instruments (a Turkish dulcimer, for example) and more modern, Western ones. Hopefully, I managed to hybridize this diverse orchestra in a way that will be pleasing to your ears. Speaking of orchestras, “Nine Nothing” (it was the ninth composition in this series) is pretty much a pop orchestra sound. I’m not surprised that I slipped back into this style of composing. I have enjoyed the performing, arranging, and composing I’ve done for orchestra instruments so greatly over the years. It will come as no surprise to those of you who have been following along at home that I love to create piano improvisations. Here is the one on this album: “Starting Nothing”. I did mix in a little bit of synthesizer and made sure it’s in a non-typical time signature. (Extra points when you figure out what the count is on this one. I’ll give you a clue, it’s not in 3 or 4.) Nothing inspires the way ‘nothing’ does. Check out the new album FROM NOTHING. Click To Tweet ## Where Did This Sound Come From? The next track is one of my favorites on this album. It was fun to create and I enjoy listening to it even after all the mixing and such. “From Nothing” has some great sounds on it including the ever-mesmerizing hang drum and a few bits of _found_ percussion. (That literally means that I made sounds by tapping on stuff that I found around the house and yard.) Do some songs paint a picture for you? I know that’s how many musical tracks affect me. Even while I was creating this one (“Scene Nothing”), I knew that it was painting a scene. Somewhere in Brazil, I was at a cafe with my love and enjoying a delightful beverage. Nearby, there were street performers opening up their tiny stages and beginning to sparkle with their act… I find the oboe to be an irresistible sound. “Just Nothing” starts and ends with solo oboe. This sound is a beautiful mixture of organic reeds used in many cultures and the refined flair of the contemporary orchestra. In keeping with that orchestral feel, I opted for plenty of sul ponticello, col legno, sul tasto, and similar ethereal string techniques. ## The Sounds of Nothing The rest of the tracks on this album are all quite ambient and ephemeral. Though there’s not an absence of structure, they tend towards a more minimalist and introspective sound. Check them out, though! I think a few of them are quite pleasing or relaxing listens. “Knew Nothing” was the first track I created for this album. I suspect you will easily hear my meandering attempts to stay with the flow of nothing’s inspiration. This was a piece that I over-arranged and then removed about half of it to make it sound better. (My wife often encourages me to get rid of stuff in my arrangements when she listens to them.) Eventually, I found it to be challenging to pull inspiration from nothingness. At first, it was novel and so the arrangements flowed. Even though “Much Of Nothing” is ethereal, it took more craft and effect to get it to the point that I could even consider releasing it on this album. You may have a completely different opinion and I’d enjoy hearing from you about it. ## Winding Down “Four Nothing” is the most ambient piece on the album. Put on headphones and listen to it just before bedtime. Hey, maybe I’ll take my own advice. And the final track on _From Nothing_ is the orchestrated version of “Starting Nothing”. You’ve already heard the piano improvisation that became the basis for this arrangement. Somehow this version has a character all it’s own. I hope you enjoyed this new album of instrumental pieces and a little bit about my journey to create it. Let me know your thoughts about these tracks. And if you ever have questions about creative process, I enjoy discussing stuff like that. (Leave a comment here or contact me on Twitter.) Naturally, you can download this album from my (BandCamp) shop. And, of course, it will soon be on all your favorite streaming services such as Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, and more. Recording Vocals: What You Need To Know About Microphones
### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Microphones are one of the most essential tools when recording music. Whether you record in a studio or at home, the microphone is vital for most of the things that you’ll be doing. When recording songs, the microphone will be crucial for vocal tracks that you need for these projects. And while we’ve already given you detailed tips for mixing vocals here at muz4now, there are basic things that you’ll need for getting started producing good vocal recordings. To get the best quality voice tracks, you’ll need to know how to fully utilize the microphone. While it may seem simple, there are a lot of factors that affect the sounds that it captures. This is why we’ve prepared a short rundown of what you need to know to begin selecting and using microphones for vocal recordings. Home Studio: Three things you must know about microphones for recording. Click To Tweet ## Types of Vocal Microphones There are two types of microphones that are most commonly used in recordings: condenser and dynamic. This distinction between these two is important, as they capture sound very differently. This is because the microphone types vary in frequency response. Dynamic microphones have a reputation for being better at capturing drums and live vocals. This often makes them suboptimal for studio use, as you’ll want to get the subtleties in sound when it comes to vocal recordings. Here is a starting point if you need to choose a vocal microphone for your recording studio. It highlights how condenser microphones are better suited for recording vocals due to their proficiency at capturing complex sounds at higher frequencies. The type of mic you use will depend entirely on the situation. Keep this in mind when selecting what microphone to use. Not all microphones are created equal. Know the basics before you buy. Click To Tweet ## Sensitivity and SPL Sensitivity and SPL are also important factors to consider when choosing a microphone. A microphone’s sensitivity is determined by how quiet a sound it can detect. SPL, which stands for sound pressure level, is the maximum volume that a microphone can handle before the sound quality starts getting affected. This becomes especially important when recording vocals that are louder than usual. According to this post on musicianshq, you’ll want a microphone that’s sensitive enough that it can record at -18dB. This way, you’ll be able to record without sacrificing audio quality, all while still being audible. You’ll also want to keep the loudest part of your vocal recordings at around -10dB. Any louder than that and you risk the vocals being distorted. ## Polar Patterns Lastly, a microphone’s polar patterns play into how it captures sound as well. In an article about podcasting microphones, the author explains that a polar pattern is the shape and size of the area that a microphone is able to capture sounds from. Omnidirectional mics have wide polar patterns and are good for recording multiple people at once. These are often used to record choirs or ensemble songs. Cardioid mics are what you should be using if you’re looking to focus on one person’s vocals. These have a lower chance of picking up background noise, making it a better option for recording vocals. Be sure to take all of these things into consideration when selecting a microphone for your next recording session. Remember that using the right microphone will surely yield benefits when it comes to improving the audio quality of your recordings. _Article specially written formuz4now.com By Alisha Graham_ ### Please share! This is a much more random — and important based on my experience — set of thoughts about recording your album. The bottom line? If you’ve never recorded before, don’t assume that you can do it. Spend some time mentoring with a recording engineer, take some online courses, or at least view a few free tutorial videos about the recording process. Even the basic standards and techniques are not intuitive. This is a craft that you _learn_. Here are some thoughts on recording, mixing, and mastering. Musical recordings can easily become a complex process. Prepare yourself. Click To Tweet ## Recording If you’re _hiring_ time in a studio, don’t even book the time until you have the songs ready to go. That means you’ve practiced all your parts and could perform them (or have performed them) all live. Obviously, if you have created virtual tracks, you’ll need to find out from the studio how those can be imported into the studio session. On the other hand, you may have the good fortune (as I did) of recording in your own studio. You’ve already budgeted for — and probably purchased — any software or hardware you’ll need, so you’re ready to go. Your arrangement may determine how your recording will start. If you have an acoustic-focused track, you may want to start with a scratch track. Typically, this will just be the singer and one instrument (perhaps a guitar, piano, or banjo). The focus will be on tempo, rhythm, and style rather than on a perfect performance. You may have a band that wants (or needs) to perform the song as close to “live” as possible in order to get the right feel. That’s a completely valid approach, too. It requires thorough preparation as well. A fully orchestrated arrangement (whether multiple live instruments or a mix of virtual and/or live recordings) will require that the tracks be laid down in sequence (unless they’ve already been provided to you by an orchestrator). The details of this process are beyond the scope of this post. (But let me know if you’re interested in the comments and I’ll provide that detail in a later post.) ## Mixing When estimating times until your release, be sure to factor in longer than expected times for completing the mixing and mastering. Because my earlier releases tended to be just a few tracks, I underestimated the time on this highly multi-tracked album. If you hire someone to do the engineering (mixing and mastering), ask them how long it will take them. If they complete their work early, that will become a bonus in your timeline. If you don’t have experience mixing and want to do it yourself, you will need to take a class or hire an engineer. It’s not just about the fader on each track. It’s about mix (channel “soundstage” and frequency) separation and so much more. It’s true that mastering recordings is an art and a science. Click To Tweet ## Mastering If you have limited experience with mastering, start learning the details before you begin the recordings. (It’s best to know about this process even if you don’t do it yourself.) Also, unless your control room and speakers are tuned _perfectly_ and your mastering templates are fully tested, be prepared to mix and master multiple times in order to get the best sound possible on a wide range of playback systems. Obviously, you can also hire out the mastering to a professional. Recently, there have been several online mastering companies that have started advertising and collaborating with distributors. Because I enjoy the full control of doing my mixing and mastering, I have only done test runs with these services. If you’ve had excellent experiences with one of them, let me know. Here are some of my favorite mixing/mastering plugins. (I don’t get anything for sharing these with you. They are simply plugins I appreciate and use regularly.) * Audified MixChecker is a helpful starting point for making sure your mix/master sound reasonable on all types of speakers and headphones. Though this plugin is quite good at what it does, I still recommend playing your recordings on several different sound systems for a real-world test that the sound can stand up to all the places it will be played. * iZotope Ozone is my main plugin for mastering. There are lots of tutorial videos on how to use it in a professional manner and you can use some of the mastering templates provided as a starting point. Need help with setting the EQ for mixing or mastering? Add Neutron for some helpful automated suggestions for these settings. * For vocals, I frequently turn to Waves Maserati VX1. In addition to compression and EQ tuned for vocal tracks, VX1 has its own delay & reverb. Most parameters are tweakable with presets for useful starting points. Some of my go-to plugins from @WavesAudioLtd @Audified @iZotopeInc Click To Tweet Next, I’ll cover marketing. That is where I made the most mistakes. So are sunrises. Every sunset and sunrise in this photo series is on my Instagram feed. Please follow me there for lots more beautiful nature photos. ## The Changing Light Since I moved to upstate New York, one of my favorite things to see and photograph is the changing light. Sunlight here changes throughout the day and between the seasons in such dramatic ways. Especially in Autumn, the changing light catches my eye and draws me to my camera. > Shining Through #sun #sky #clouds #cloudporn #muz4now #twithaca #lake #cayuga #nature #water #sunrise #outdoors #outside #nofilter > > A post shared by Stan Stewart (aka muz4now) (@muz4now) on May 9, 2015 at 4:44am PDT > Stretched Light #sun #sunrise #sky #skyporn #clouds #cloudporn #muz4now #outside #outdoors #nature #trees #silhouette #light #travel > > A post shared by Stan Stewart (aka muz4now) (@muz4now) on Sep 12, 2015 at 8:52am PDT > Brighten Up #sunrise #clouds #butterfly #muz4now #sky #sunriselovers #cloudlovers #butterflies #skylovers #tree #trees #treelovers #nature #cayuga #cayugalake #cayuganaturecenter #outdoors #outside #naturelovers #outdoorsnewyork #outdoorsny > > A post shared by Stan Stewart (aka muz4now) (@muz4now) on Oct 26, 2017 at 12:27am PDT ## Lake Sunrise & Sunset Views In the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, we have wonderful views of the rising and setting sun against water. Though I try to be careful to tag photos as specifically a sunrise or sunset, when it comes to loveliness, I’m not sure that it matters which one it is. Certainly, in upstate New York there are very frequent marvels when the sun is first rising above the horizon _and_ when it is sinking out of sight. > See Beyond #sun #trees #sky #clouds #muz4now #see #beyond #nature #naturelovers #sunrise #sunset #skylovers #cloudlovers #outdoors #outside #opening > > A post shared by Stan Stewart (aka muz4now) (@muz4now) on Jul 29, 2016 at 2:13am PDT > Rise Up! #sunrise #sun #sky #clouds #lake #trees #forest #upstateny #cayugalake #nature #outside #outdoors > > A post shared by Stan Stewart (aka muz4now) (@muz4now) on Mar 17, 2016 at 5:41am PDT > Frigid Air.
