Medway Islands WeBS 17/7 Still breeding gulls & terns present but most departed - no Little Terns🙁. Sandwich Terns still present tho at new site, with 2+ juvs😊 so hopes for return next year. Also young Med Gull. Over 1,000 Curlew & 50+ Whimbrel Pics @bobknight.bsky.social @smp-seabirds.bsky.social
Young Med Gull begging food from adult.About 40 Sandwich Terns at the new colony site (long term breeding beach abandoned two years ago). So glad they’ve stuck, and successfully bred, even though numbers just a fraction of previous years.
A young bird can be seen on the left of pic.Sandwich Terns, plus Oystercatchers and a B/H Gull with young bird.
An incoming S/Tern with a fish for youngster.Adult Common Tern on post. Sadly, only about 25 seen and no juveniles/proof of breeding

It's been a record-breaking year for little terns at Long Nanny, Northumberland! A minimum of 126 breeding pairs are nesting at the site this season, far surpassing the previous record of 57 breeding pairs in 1994. They're the UK’s second rarest breeding seabird so this is good news.

Back from Devon and straight into delayed WeBS and SMP visits. Utterly grim at Cliffe RSPB, with the low water levels resulting in almost total loss of breeding season for gulls, terns and waders. However, a pair of LRP with 4 chicks😊, and one small BHG colony (83 AON) @smp-seabirds.bsky.social
The Black Barn Pools, Cliffe, dried up - in May!
240 B/H Gulls were nesting on these islands on May 6th, with lots of waders too.
The dried up Black Barn Pools, Cliffe. The only safe gull breeding islands currently at Cliffe RSPB, with deep water surrounds. A sad shadow of once thriving colony of 1-2,000 pairs across the many reserve islands, until a couple of years ago, when water levels started to fall.

Mediterranean Gulls and B/H Gulls on a small saltmarsh island - breeding is always at the mercy of spring tides.Little Terns - great to see 30 today. Fingers crossed for a successful season. We don’t have all the protection measures and wardens that other UK sites have. Our Medway gulls and terns have to wing it as best they can - up against spring tides, weather, predation and recreational disturbance.A very unexpected adult Shag, on a barge off Hoo IslandA woman in charge today, with Eleni at the helm👍

Very enjoyable Naturalists Picnic Lunch at Upper Mystole Park Farm, hosted by Keith & Jenny Dugmore. Nice to say hello to long time birding colleagues and have tour of new wetland habitats. A drive through Denge Woods afterwards produced a flock of 14 Crossbills. @kentwildlife.bsky.social
As part of nutrient neutrality mitigation, new wetland habitat has been created at Upper Mystole Park Farm by KWT. An unusual location on high chalk downland but offers great potential for wildlife in an otherwise dry landscape.Upper Mystole Park Farm was a former fruit farm growing apples. Many trees remain but wilding habitat and scrub have attracted Nightingale and Turtle Dove…..the presence of water may make the area more attractive for these species. In nearby Denge Woods I found a roadside flock of 14 Crossbills. The birds flew up from middle of young Sweet Chestnut coppice….which seemed odd.An investigation revealed why the birds were flying down into the young coppice……a tiny pool of rainwater in tractor tracks.
Surprising what water in a dry landscape can attract…….

Enjoyable visit to Dover White Cliffs on Thurs despite the sea fret. A few nice flowers, a Chalk Hill Blue, pair of Stonechats, then the superb path down to the beach. A Black Redstart & Rock Pipits on the cliffs on way down. Ended with Raven flying over into the mist. @whitecliffsdover.bsky.social
A lovely view of South Foreland Cliffs looking east. A moment of clarity between banks of sea mist which made for foggy conditions at times. A splendid male Stonechat in the clifftop scrubby vegetation. Much agitated calling from the male and female, so likely nest or young nearby. The long zigzag path down the cliffs eventually passes through a tunnel, which was dug in 2019 by NT volunteers to help improve access to the beach below. The final steps down to the grey-pebble beach.

Medway Islands WeBS/SMP count 26/5. Count of adults - B/H Gull 3,443, Med Gull 336, Sandwich Tern 155, Little Tern 25, but virtually no Com Terns. Sandwich Tern nesting beach deserted…although some birds have moved elsewhere. Effect of the earlier cold NE winds? Pics by @Bknight_3 @smp_seabirds
Surprised to see a colony of Sandwich Terns on a part of their breeding island where never seen before…but cautious optimism short-lived when virtually none on usual breeding beach😱
Looked like scouring of the beach had occurred, and maybe tidal flooding. Perhaps 60 AON overall, well down on usual 2-300Male Sandwich Tern trying to bribe female with a nice fish! Some Meds and Sandwich Terns were resting up on saltmarsh - presumably non-breeding or failed breeders, deterred by the earlier battering by the cold north/east winds?A total of up to 25 Little Terns on usual breeding island. Vast numbers of pheasants are released for shooting in Ireland too. Each one survives by constantly devouring native wildlife alive. They artificially boost fox/mink populations, impacting vanishing native ground-nesting birds. They help spread Lyme disease to people, etc. This madness MUST end.
