The Kent Ornithological Society was founded in 1952. Its aims are to record and monitor the county’s bird life providing both a historical record of Kent’s birds but equally importantly providing data that can be used to help protect valuable habitats.

Lots of scarce birds in Kent this week. Best were an Iberian Chiffchaff and a fly-by Gull-billed Tern. But there was plenty more with Hoopoe, Black-winged Stilt, Red-footed Falcon, Glossy Ibis and Temminck’s Stint all recorded. All details on kentos.org.uk #kentbirding

KOS Site of the month – March Northward Hill RSPB - March is a perfect time to visit this North Kent gem! The UK’s largest heronry is bursting into life, with Grey Herons and Little Egrets busy nesting. Keep an eye on the marshes for Marsh Harriers and wintering wildfowl! #kentosbirding #kentbirding

KOS species of the month – March March can see Northern Wheatears arrive in Kent. This smart looking species does breed in Kent but many more pass through to breed more northerly, including the Greenland sub species on their way to Greenland and north-west Canada. #kentbirding

KOS Site of the month – February The Ancient Highway running between Deal and Sandwich Bay allows viewing over Worth Marsh which has been a goose hot spot this winter with at least six species there. Look out as well for partridge and wintering wildfowl and waders. #kentbirding

KOS species of the month – January Kittiwake – No longer a breeding species within Kent these medium sized gulls are best identified off the coast in winter by their yellow bill, grey wash over the back of the neck, black wing tips and black legs.  #kentosbirding #kentbirding
