A fantastic evening attempting to catch Owls in the recording area this evening with singles of Short-eared and Long-eared caught. The former being just the third ringed by the Observatory. #kentbirding

Hundreds of Chiffchaffs across the recording area today, with a sprinkling of other migrants making for a good days birding and ringing. The best found so far being a Quail flushed near the Polish War Memorial #kentbirding

A day of mostly overhead passage saw 600 House Martin, 200 Swallow, three Tree Pipit, a Brambling, 75 Reed Bunting and the first flocks of Goldfinches of the autumn amongst other bits. The bushes held a few bits including three Firecrest, 10 Song Thrush and a Ring Ouzel. #kentbirding

Just got the news back on a juvenile Redshank that was seen by the Lifeboat station on the 11th September. It was originally ringed just 11 days earlier at Makkevika, Giske in Norway, a total of 1323km away.

A brilliant day for passage offshore. Most notable totals included 68 DB Brents, 12 Shoveler, 20 Wigeon, 45 Pintail, 25 Teal, six Redshank, 50 Little Gull, two Sooty, two Manx and 141 Balearic Shearwater. The highlight was a probable first for Dungeness in the form of a Sunfish drifting east.

58 Balearic Shearwaters west past the Fishing Boats in the first hour this morning. Otherwise fairly quiet with a few dabblers, Arctic Skuas and two Little Gulls. #kentbirding

Offshore passage had three Shoveler, 85 Wigeon, six Pintail, 44 Teal and six Little Gull the best. Overhead there was a bit of passage including 405 Swallow, 300 Meadow Pipit & 17 Siskin, some unseen Chaffinch flocks heard arriving this afternoon. A Redwing was on nocmig last night #kentbirding

Today's best record so far is a Yellow-browed Warbler calling in the Old Lighthouse garden at 09:40hrs. There has also been a couple of Balearic Shearwaters west and a Caspian Gull on the beach by the Lifeboat Station. #kentbirding

First two Redwing of the autumn as well as 5 Song Thrush, Firecrest, Lesser Whitethroat and an arrival of Chiffchaff and Blackcap in the bushes so far today. Overhead there has been a trickle of Swallow and Meadow Pipit, plus singles of Tree Pipit and Grey Wagtail. #kentbirding

A Death’s-head Hawk-moth is on show at the Observatory until late afternoon, it was trapped the night of the 24th near New Romney.

Another Chiffchaff bonanza with a day total of 350, of those another 90 were ringed. There wasn't much variety on the land, but another 145 Blackcaps were seen. The seawatching provided an unexpected 52 Balearic Shearwaters. #kentbirding

Another excellent arrival of warblers today with the headline birds being 300 Chiffchaff and 135 Blackcap, the best otherwise just a Firecrest and a couple of Redstart. The rise of Blue Tits continued with 70 recorded today. Overhead there were 750 Swallow but otherwise quiet. #kentbirding

A varied day with a good fall in the bushes headlined by 470 Chiffchaff, 10 Willow Warbler, a Yellow-browed Warbler, 80 Blackcap, two Spotted Flycatcher, 48 Robin, three Redstart and 16 Wheatear. A total of 247 birds ringed, mostly Chiffchaff but a Merlin the last catch of the day was a surprise!

A very good fall of Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps with over 175 birds ringed this morning, all amongst a host of other species. Best of all being a showy Yellow-browed Warbler at the south end of the Trapping Area at around 11am ##kentbirding

A smart pale juvenile Honey Buzzard flew south out to sea at 07:15hrs this morning. A scattering of new migrants in the bushes this morning but no sign of the Western Bonelli's Warbler so far. A swirling flock of 2500 House Martins descended onto the Lighthouses and Power Station #kentbirding

Continued presence of the Western Bonelli's Warbler was certainly the highlight of the day. Hirundines in force again with 7440 Swallow and 800 House Martin out to sea. The bushes were quieter with 22 Willow, 65 Chiffchaff, 70 Blackcap, a Spotted Flycatcher, a Redstart and a Whinchat. #kentbirding

The Western Bonelli's Warbler found yesterday by our volunteer Tom Rosas made its way into one of the mist nets in the Trapping Area this morning. It was shown to a small crowd at the Observatory after being ringed, then released back into the north-east corner of the Trapping Area. #kentbirding

The star bird of the day was a Western Bonelli's Warbler that was seen on and off on the edge of the Long Pits and Trapping Area. The land was busy with 46 Willow Warbler, 105 Chiffchaff, a Sedge, a Reed, 40 Blackcap, two Garden, 12 Lesser Whitethroat, 14 Whitethroat... #kentbirding

Western Bonelli's Warbler still at the northern end of the Trapping Area. A fairly hectic morning with birds arriving throughout with 70 Chiffchaff, 30 Willow Warbler, 40 Blackcap, two Garden Warbler, three Spotted Flycatcher, two Whinchat etc. Big Swallow passage with 6000 out to sea! #kentbirding

A bit of a comedown on yesterday but still a good day, with the sea still the place to be. The highlights being two juvenile Long-tailed Skuas flying west together past the Fishing Boats at 17:15hrs, also two Balearic Shearwaters, 20 Black Tern and two Little Gull. #kentbirding

A superb afternoon seawatch didn't have a great deal of birds but it did have excellent quality - the star being a first for Dungeness in the form of an adult Brown Booby! Other goodies included a close juvenile Long-tailed Skua, 15 Black Tern and three Little Gull. #kentbirding

An unforgettable afternoon at the Dungeness Fishing Boats when at c14:15 I picked up a fabulous BROWN BOOBY feeding amongst a group of Gannets offshore. Panic ensued but the 5 of us got on the bird before MC summoned more eyes from DBO & local birding community. Photos obtained by others… 🌟 Bird !!!

A full on day so far with 6000 House Martin and 3000 Swallow passing through, plus a light scattering of grounded migrants on the land. The Wryneck is still in the gorse clump c200m east of Trapping Area. Another attempt to catch House Martins saw another 150 ringed. #kentbirding

A day of hirundines, with at least 2000 House Martin and 3700 Swallow through, but numbers of Sand Martins dwindling with just 20 noted. For about an hour or so, the House Martins were low enough to catch and 146 were ringed. #kentbirding

Another decent day on the sea. The best offshore was a Sabine's Gull but other highlights included Scaup, 69 Ringed Plover, five Whimbrel, three Common Sandpiper, 31 Turnstone, eight Knot, five Black Tern, 136 Kittiwake, three Caspian Gull, 60 Arctic Skua, a Manx, 4 Balearic Shearwater. #kentbirding
