Yeah, that I don’t know.. my guess is since yours was Break the Multiverse, and this one is Mutiverse Reforged, they wanted it clear that Jace is undoing what your card was doing. And they wanted imagery that Magic players would recognize. It’s lazy, yes, but also possible.

But also, I just want to caution throwing another artist under the bus publicly before knowing for sure whether he did it on his own or was asked by the AD’s to use it in the piece to tell a story in the card. I understand your frustration, but sometimes it’s just how they art direct a card.

Have you checked with the AD’s first? There’s been times when I’ve been asked to directly reference past cards. So this could be like, “they specifically asked for this.” In which it’s within Wizards rights as they own the copyright. They should have assigned it to you in the first place though!

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.

AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

QRP your spys/rogues! 🕵️ "Rogue's Stealth," digital over graphite, done as part of a series of DnD classes way back in 2019 (OMG!). I feel like the flapping of his clothes would give him away, but maybe the merchant is deaf.

A rogue leaps toward a traveling merchant with two daggers drawn. They are lit by fire or lantern light from the bottom left, and the crescent moon is high behind the rogue.

QRP your spys/rogues! 🕵️ "Opposition Agent," oil on panel, painted for MTG. Easily my most popular card with players, and sadly, one that I really didn't like much back when I painted it. But I've come to appreciate it more now.

In an alley way, a hooded spy/rogue character crouches over a courier type bag with various documents in it. They are holding up a paper and scanning it's contents. In the background we can see an official-looking man incapacitated with purple magic swirling around his head. Beyond is buildings on a street.
