Thanks to EVERYONE for all the love my last post got - I feel very seen. Here is the promised photo of the big piece to date. I started working on this in November 2024. 14 embroidered squares done and 11 more to go. All improvised stitching. It’s gonna be one big brain. #SciArt #FiberArt

The two shapes that make up the design are a quarter circle and a semicircle. The blue angles are the two marked with solidly coloured sectors. The orange angle is the one marked with an arc and a question mark.

I had the idea of making a Truchet tiling holder that lets me rotate each piece by 90°. There's a little pin in the tray and a slot under each piece that allows each insert to rotate and line up in one of two orientations.

A 3D-printed Truchet tiling with pairs of quarter circles.

The inserts in the tray have no chosen orientations.

Two regular hexagons inside a rectangle. What fraction of the rectangle is shaded? I found this #geometrypuzzle in my sketchbook - I drew it last June, but I’m pretty sure I never got round to posting it. Better late than never!

A rectangle with one diagonal drawn in. A regular hexagon sits on the left below the diagonal, with one side vertical against the side of the rectangle, one sloping side lying along the diagonal, and a vertex touching the base of the rectangle. A second regular hexagon sits above the diagonal on the right so that the design has rotational symmetry. Everything inside the rectangle but outside the hexagons is shaded blue.

Happy rectangular February! There are 1522 ways (up to symmetry) to tile a 4×7 rectangle with the 2- through 4-ominoes. Can anything cool be done with these? Maybe, but I haven't thought of anything yet.

An aperiodic tessellation of the hyperbolic plane, found by Toimine in the #tessellations channel in the HyperRogue discord. These tiles have edge length of 0.56358, less than the previous record for a equilateral convex tile (0.56626, achieved by the regular {7,3} tiling).
