"I belong to a cult. Someone did some research that undermines the core tenets of my cult and came up with a catchy phrase that makes it harder to recruit more people to my cult. This makes me sad."
Screencap of tweet on X from @jackclarkSF (Jack Clark):

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

I guess for me it seems like it'd be on the crass side but okay for late night TV, but for the DNC to be posting it I'd say it seems both cringe and really disrespectful to him.

Should I stick the messy draft that needs to get split into two papers and redone on a preprint service and then point to it as a working paper? (I'm not lying, it is a working paper, but I also have a full time dev gig, a side gig, and two young kids so work happens sporadically.)

I hate to be on here asking for professional advice, but how messy can a paper be and still be acceptable to submit to a preprint service? I'm about to apply for a lectureship position. I have a pocket paper that got rejected for good reasons (cramming too much in). But I don't have a good pub.

This should be utterly unshocking but leftists seem to really struggle to let go of the St. Bernie image. Like, he's been really useful. He's also an outright ass in a lot of ways. Let's just let him be that and thank him for his service and also MOVE ON FROM HIM.

Like beyond the dozens of moderate critiques I have of him over the years he's really shitty to Black women service workers. I know because I stayed at the same hotel as him years ago and was bantering with the staff about him and they could NOT WAIT to tell me he was an asshole to them. So, yanno.

Been on my bullshit for 10 years now, but some folks really need to understand that Bernie Sanders rose because he was basically the only politician with a modicum of power in Washington who espoused democratic socialist views when the demand for such positions became overwhelming. He's just okay.

If they could do this to a discipline as foundational as history, it wasn't hard to see that science wasn't too far down on the menu.

We should also note that this isn't remotely unique to or originating in science. They did the same things to the humanities a decade ago and too many scientists responded with a shrug or a kind of unspoken, "suck it up, softies!" attitude.
