The Adams-holdover clowns at NYC DOT and their stuffed-shirt boss say it's impossible because OMG WE CAN DO NOTHING WITHOUT FEDERAL PERMISSION. But I lived in Chicago when they closed Meigs Field so I know better.

They should consider Alcibiades. Admittedly he is dead, but in all other ways, particularly with regard to personal integrity and respect for democratic norms, he's got a lot more going for him than their usual candidates.

They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

If we held people personally and criminally liable for the "autonomous" actions of the corporations they create and deploy, I bet the risky behavior would evaporate overnight.

Democrats Who Are Still Afraid of Supreme Court Expansion Need to Grow Up
Democrats are finally grasping that their voters do not like the Supreme Court and do not want to be represented by politicians who defend it.

The Democratic Party has let a consulting industry exploit elderly donors in its name, wreck its reputation and finances in the process, and walk away rich whether the party wins or loses. When a mirror is held up, the instinct is to break the glass rather than look. On why the press looks away:

The Bulwark Killed an Investigation into Political Fundraising Spam After Its Publisher Took the Consultants’ Side
This is a story about the Democratic Party captured by its consultants, and about what happens when the pro-democracy press is asked to say so.

When you hear “exploiting the elderly for donations” you might think that’s something like hitting them up for $50-100 once every week or two. But often it’s on the scale of this guy- charged up to 88 times a day. Over $32,000 extracted in just FOUR MONTHS data4democracy.substack.com/p/the-bulwar...
An 85-year-old Texas resident - charged up to 88 times in a single day, and 4,208 times between Feb. 17 and June 30, 2026, for a total of $32,742.

During the deep pandemic, I broke my arm. Early winter 2021 I was on the subway regularly 6AM to a little PT office a block from Times HQ. Busy subway station even then, with a police precinct and MTA HR office in it. Everyone careful and masked except...the cops and the Times employees.

The city's contractor for this (court-ordered!) work sent a crew to our neighborhood who dug up the street without calling for utility markings, and almost hit a gas line. ConEd showed up and told them they had to hand dig and they left and never came back.

This happened in my middle school in NYC in the 80s. Administration tried to crack down kn senior skip day at the attached HS; so we all learned that the response plan for a bomb threat was to walk the entire campus to safety half a mile away in Central Park. And then every day or two for weeks.

To me personally the best answer is "our society, which values life, will absorb this cost, so that all its members can flourish" but that is an answer the same people demanding this child be born have loudly and repeatedly denounced. Consider accordingly their claim to the moral high ground.
000
Μιθριδάτης @mtanotok.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Not caring whether a child has their chest cut open repeatedly to provide more months or years of life is just evil. Blackmailing that child and their parents their whole lives to keep receiving that care is evil too. Know that when considering what Paxton and his ilk say about cases like this one.

Μιθριδάτης @mtanotok.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
If the answer is "the parents will pay for it, and they took on that risk when they decided to become parents" , well, whatever I may think of your argument's moral force, you are refusing to admit the very real chance that the parents *will not be able to pay for it over the child's lifetime*.
000
Μιθριδάτης @mtanotok.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
If the answer is "oh our church will pay for it" or "oh this beneficent hyper-wealthy guy will pay for it" each time care is needed this is morally abhorrent. It is blackmailing the parents and eventually the child to attest to particular religious beliefs or appease a rich guy just to stay alive.

As someone with deep personal experience relevant to this story, I have thoughts. Children born with severe congenital heart defects can have long, wonderful lives, if they receive $10Ms of lifelong medical care. Who will ensure this child's care is paid for? www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

We had a cat with serious cardiac issues which were not disclosed to us by the rescue where we adopted. I would caution before adopting a breed known for cardiac issues to please consider whether you can afford to care for the pet you will come to deeply love. It can be tragic for all involved.

It is exactly Aristotle's "natural slave" argument, with the word "slave" removed. But you can be a law school professor without knowing that (or a lot of things) so clearly Wurman is blameless.

The red card was (may have been) a perceptual error, or an error in judgment. The overturning was a deliberate act of corruption. These are not "wrong" in the same way.

This achieves nothing for existing buildings, nor does it better the lives of people who live in them now, nor is it effective at temperatures already seasonally occurring in parts of the world where tens to hundreds of millions of people live.

Μιθριδάτης @mtanotok.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
As I reread our exchange I feel badly that we have done a fair bit of talking past one another. Sorry about that. Sure, there are ways to do that ($$) in retrofits of existing buildings. It's the pat "just put in a 'floor unit'" I am calling out as usually worse than "just put in a window unit".

Μιθριδάτης @mtanotok.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Correction: @docbenway.bsky.social asked why. And I am trying to explain, practically, some of the reasons. They are not reasons that carry the day in every case, but they do in many. It is the bespoke nature of the solutions actually effective in older buildings that slows deployment.
000
Μιθριδάτης @mtanotok.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
At the end of the day, the problem with retrofitting old buildings is that pat "everyone should just do it like this" solutions usually don't work, which increases engineering and labor costs and slows ubiquitous deployment. Of course it should be done. But there is no silver bullet. (5/5)

There are clever packaged solutions like the Epoca AIO which place a soundproofed heat pump, with properly ducted air over both sides of the coil, entirely in the tenant's space. But European living spaces are also _smaller_ than American ones, on average, so that too is problematic. (4/5)
