Cao Rui was also "in charge" (🤨) of Wei during Zhuge Liang's famous "Northern Expeditions", so any stages in Dynasty Warriors pitting Zooge against KOW KOW or KOW PEE aren't accurate because the former had been dead for eight years and the latter has been dead for two.

Cao Rui was Cao Cao's grandson and the second emperor of Wei. He was the "son" of Cao Pi and Zhenji, though he may have actually been Yuan Xi's son (Zhenji's previous husband). "Rui" is a name I don't think I'll ever be able to pronounce. Is there anyone who can write it out phonetically for me? 😆

I'm binging Three Kingdoms content again. One thing I appreciate about DW3 Remaster is that how it doesn't feel as padded as modern games. I guess back in 2001 games weren't designed to waste your time as much. (gotta keep people around so they'll buy the DLC!)

In the games Huang Gai is typically depicted as an intense old man. Usually a beefcake. One thing about Dynasty Warriors is that none of the games convey how much time passes between stages very well. For instance, there are 37 years between Stage 1 and Stage 4 of Huang Gai's DW3 story mode.

I've been playing the "Dynasty Warriors 3 Remaster" lately. Starting off with Huang Gai. Huang Gai in Dynasty Warriors is really a hodgepodge of Han Dang, Cheng Pu, Zhu Zhi, and himself. The IRL Huang Gai was a popular, but relatively minor official who served under the Sun clan for a long time.

Whenever I talk about these games on social media everyone talks the most fondly about DW4 or DW5. It's surprising to me that DW3 is the most "fan famous". Maybe they're basing that info strictly on sales numbers...

Didn't realize it was the OGs. That makes sense that they kept them. I thought they got some AI to do English VAs because they figured everyone would switch to Chinese. I played DW3 a lot back in the day but it's been 25 years and nearly a dozen more games since. I can't remember everything! 😆

I know quite a bit, but there's a guy on YouTube named "Serious Trivia" who knows A LOT more. I like to watch his videos. He has a really cool one about Zhang Liao and regards him very highly, so that only makes me like the channel even more! 😆

I booted up Fallout 4 for the first time in a LONG time (maybe a year?) so I could install all the new updates and check them out. Played it for about 10 minutes. I fast traveled to my home base and the game crashed. Oh, Todd.

ahh gotcha. Yeah, now that you mention it, the later games do feel relatively linear, even the big "open" areas. Like every map has a checklist of things to do, and if you don't do them, you're probably going to lose. Another thing I don't like about the newer ones is how weak Lu Bu is.

I don't really pay much attention to that kinda stuff tbh... I just go with the vibe I get whenever I talk about these games online. It seems like a lot of people got into Three Kingdoms with DW3 and then went from there. I got heavily into Rot3K in 1992 so I was already 10 years into it by 2001 😆

I got that experience from DW8XL. Hefei and Fancheng in particular off the top of my head. Also the Yellow Turban Rebellion stage, if you're playing on Zhang Jiao's forces, usually gets around 5K enemies KO'd and you don't really even have to try to do that.

From what I've found, most people who follow this series liked DW4 or DW5 the best. I think a lot of people played DW3 and then moved on after that.

DW8XL has some pretty huge maps. That's my favorite of them, but DW4 and DW5 are right after that. I think DW9 was cool...in theory.

to me it makes stages feel less impressive. I don't remember if the Battle of Tong Gate was in DW3, but if it is, not having models for Ma Dai, Pang De, and Jia Xu detracts from it. Makes it seem less important. My favorites are still in the game, fortunately (Zhang Liao and Xu Huang)

Same, tbh. A "HD Remaster" would've been fine with me. The ONLY thing I wished they would have added were updated character models for officers like Yuan Shu, Cao Ren, Ma Dai, etc. They wouldn't have to be playable, but seeing them in the game would have been good for flavor.

Though, if the options are to remake a game to the point where it ruins the spirit of the original (like RE3 Remake), or do a simple remaster, I would take the latter. A simple facelift with a couple of new mechanics is better than a huge overhaul, IMO. May as well make a new game at that point.

When this game was announced I was confused because I didn't understand why they would bother remaking DW3 of all games. DW5 is better in every way that matters, so why not remake DW5? Maybe their plan was to add extra content to DW3? This IS just the demo, so maybe there's more than I realize.

The English dub is laughably bad. Not in a "it's so bad it's good" way either. It's so bad it makes me think it's AI. Sun Shangxiang sounds almost like Storm from the X-men cartoon. wtf... Fortunately there's a Chinese language option. Maybe the Chinese VA is just as bad, but I can't tell! 😆

The Dynasty Warriors 3 Remake demo is what I expected. I'm not impressed or unimpressed. It's "the original game with a facelift and a couple of new mechanics". My major disappointment is that key characters like Yuan Shu didn't get updated character models, and still look like generic officers.

Being unable to pause the game is definitely something I consider "Fromsofty Bullshit". There's no reason not to allow pausing. The Demon's Souls Remake had a photo mode that also acted as a pause, and it didn't impact the game whatsoever. And if pausing bothers someone: They don't have to pause it!

After Elden Ring everyone is "where are they gonna go from here? How are they gonna top Malenia? How can it possibly get harder???" Maybe they shouldn't make it harder. Maybe the next big test for Miyazaki is to make a really fun game that isn't hard. Like the Mystic Quest of Dark Souls.

Enemies whose attacks are "Flails around like an idiot while screaming" is something I'd like to see addressed in my CasualSoft game... Maybe they could still be in the game, just not with infinite poise or the ability to stagger on every hit.

There really aren't that many though relative to the other games, are there? I can only think of those two. Demon's Souls had the worst overall, though DS2 was pretty bad, IIRC (I don't know much about DS2, tbh). Dark Souls had some pretty annoying ones. Like the runback for Four Kings sucked.

The runbacks improved a lot since Demon's Souls, where they were all bad. (remember Allant's? -- I beat Demon's Souls on SL1 too, but I had to cheese Allant) And then they removed them entirely in ER, except for Placidusax.

Another thing is when mage enemies will sit there and spam magic endlessly. They never run out of MP, somehow have perfect tracking, can bend their spells around walls, and their spells hit about 5x harder than an equivalent spell cast by the player. aka the Burger Kings in Raya Lucaria.

Though if you're doing SL1, you need the runback to prep for RTSR stuff...So maybe it's not ENTIRELY useless. I like how in Elden Ring it asks you if you wanna spawn at a Stake of Marika or not.

The level is part of the character when you're playing the level. I don't think it's necessary for it to be there when you're trying to beat a boss. The runback on Logarius in BB is silly and not engaging in the slightest for example. You just climb a bunch of ladders.
