iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Today I saw a TikTok showing a fella who spent $20000 to achieve his dream of becoming a 7’ Sailor Moon… and all I could think was: Awesome. It was amazingly well done, but also, that’s $20000 into the economy. That’s more excellence than any data centre or hoarded pile of cash could ever.

Sacro Bosco. This park, The Gardens of Bomarzo, were commissioned by PF Orsini in the 1700’s because he was mourning his wife. He was crazy rich, and used his money to allow artists and artisans to flourish. Art patronage = money for everyone at the time, and cool stuff for posterity.

The viaduct in Park Güell. It was hard to find a singular photo to show how neat this place is. The rich guy/Industrialist Güell (think 19th/20th century tech bro) commissioned Gaudi to build a public park. Now, I will say originally this was not meant for everyone (it was meant for fellow rich people) but within 50 years it was a truly public place and now it’s a UNESCO heritage site. The important part is a rich guy used his money to pay people to create something that would preserve wildlife and be beautiful. Güell used his money to pay artists, artisans, workmen, gardeners etc. and it made everyone richer! I can’t tell you off the top of my head how Güell made his fortune, probably through means our current culture would view as… dastardly. But he won’t be remembered as a villain. He wouldn’t be remembered at all despite the money he hoarded, but his name will live on because of the money he ultimately invested in people.

The grand staircase designed by Victor Horta for the Hotel Tassel. I mean. This kicked off the Art Nouveau! Once again, a rich guy (a scientist/professor! So not even a titled or obscenely rich guy! Just a normal rich dude!) commissioned something! Spending money on art/artisans is good! It makes everyone richer and who knows, instead of being known for destroying the environment so that Susan thinks Ho Chi Min is the capital of South Korea or making glasses for Brian to record every girls face, you too might kick off an art movement!

The funniest thing about this particular crochet project is that a 4” scrap of yarn from my last project has become my most important tool. This is the most complicated thing I’ve tried to date, but I’m determined to conquer cables! #crochet

I am holding a purple crocheted bit that is the start of a blanket. There is a tiny 4” strand of green yarn I’m using as a marker. A cream furry blanket is covering my lap, and you can see the first 3 rows of the purple crocheted blanket stretched across.

A gouache painting of a fluffy white cate with yellow eyes and a pink nose. She is sitting on a nebulous background.

I drew this for a friend after her cat had been particularly naughty. I used ink, but may have used marker for the ears.

I just finished crocheting this velvety blanket! It is going to be a Christmas present for my upstairs neighbours! But what to do next? Finish a hat? Finish a different blanket? Or be naughty and start an entirely new blanket 😈 #crochet #Handmade

A blanket I finished crocheting this evening. It is spread out over a bed with a blue paisley comforter to show the size.

A close up of the blanket I just finished crocheting. You can see the cream primary colour, with the peeks of variegated (green, olive, burgundy, deep cream) yarn.

I loved this game. My parents didn’t (and still don’t) understand why I would want to play a game, but they did understand that I loved Robin Hood in all his media forms. It’s also the first game I finished multiple times (again, my parents, “why would you need more than one video game?”) From 1991.

Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood a 1991 video game cover. It depicts a pixely Robin Hood in the centre, and portraits of game allies and villains on either side.

I’m crocheting today & threw on The Adventures of Robin Hood (the 1938 Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland movie). It occurred to me that I would have loved to show it to my costuming students to ask them what it got wrong and what it got right. I think it would have led to a great project/conversation!

Sigh. This was a weird assignment. 15 minutes of “instruction”, & then being assigned a weird building at a weird angle, where we had to incorporate a Euro car & cowboy in perspective somehow. I wish I had done the little sketch first, I think it’s actually better than the large detailed drawing.

A perspective pencil drawing of a weird building, a cowboy statue, and a weird European car. There is a small perspective sketch underneath. You can see where I essentially gave up because the car looks like a sticker and nothing seems integrated.

Today I’m continuing to work on value studies. Aside from the background I kept my work in greyscale. I think the subject was a bit complex (I mean is it pattern? Texture? Or shadow?) I think I could keep feathering the feathers, but also I want to move on. #DigitalArt

A drawing of an owl done in procreate. I used primarily the procreate pencil and a bit of soft airbrush. I could keep detailing the feathers, but the point of this drawing was value, not photo realism. And it definitely looks…. Owly.
