I can't remember if the 1st chapter include the part where GMan intervenes to save Shephard's life, but that sequence alone shows Gearbox didn't at all understand that character or his archetype or his role in the narrative (even in context of HL lore being young and being a quasi X-files reference)

It's worse because the people who made him don't understand HL, and at this point, I don't think fans of OF do either Shephard is only heroic by coincidence. Had he been awake when the order was given to kill the science team, he would have been right alongside the other grunts shooting at Gordon

In slight fairness to that theory, The Thirteenth Floor did exactly that twist, which also happened to come out the same year as the first Matrix, so there was SOME precedent for it at the time (other than the sudden "Neo has Powers in the Real World 5 minutes before the movie ends" thing)
