Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 3h While I generally agree totally with this view, you occasionally get a couple of cycles where things have gone so far off the rails that they can be persuaded to actually do the right thing. Happened in 06/08 and 18/20. We could be entering another. @vivi5cents.bsky.social 010
Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 16hNot because she doesn't stand on her own merits, but because Ossoff has so deftly deflated the Collins balloon that a few Republicans might stay home. 140
Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 16hNo, Ossoff by virtue of his background makes you feel the moral injury on the nation that is Trumpism. Being Jewish and a mentee of John Lewis is rather unique, but he excels at drawing that out of himself and making an audience feel it too. 062
Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 16hPeople always want to find a magic bullet for this stuff, but give me a candidate who isn't trying to be who they aren't every time. Jon, Sherrod, Scott, Mary and Adam are all real and that shines through like a beacon. That plus luck plus a bad environment for incumbents gets you a real shot to win 0125
Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 16hOssoff, Brown, Colum, Peltola and Hamilton are each running very different campaigns, but the common element is a candidate who knows who they are and what they're good at and sticking to that. People looking too hard after election day are probably going to miss this, which is really basic stuff. 43518

Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Or Christine O'Donnell that same year, or Todd Akin in 2012. The Republican Party has a penchant for nominating kooks and nuts for high profile races. Trump wasn't something new in that sense, he was a continuation of a prior problem, as is the poor crop of 2026 candidates. 001

Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Trump +21 district in 2024, Bergman margin similar.. Not the sort of district where Republicans have recently needed to do much, so spending here tells you a *lot*. 100

Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Thank you. We may not be completely out of the woods just yet, but all the dooming is misplaced. The next two years are going to look very different than the past two. Trump can still be very dangerous with executive power, but his actions will have little public support, which matters a lot. 000
Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 08/10/2026He will probably try. But a beat down in the midterms, his 30% approval and his looming exit from office will leave him weakened politically. And Dem hearings on corruption and incompetence will weaken him further. It will be harder for him to accomplish his malevolent authoritarian goals. 141

Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Yes, and the idea is to try and win a few more of them. At a quarter of the electorate, even a small 10% gain is worth 2.5% overall. It's a big bloc of voters. 010

Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 08/10/2026This was an excellent piece. The point isn't to turn all evangelicals into Democrats. The point is that it's a large voting bloc -- 25% of voters -- and there are big political dividends to be had in picking some of them up at the margins. Dissatisfaction with Trump presents an opening with them. 1267
Matt Seyfang @mseyfang.bsky.social · 08/10/2026There's a word for a good chunk of the center right these days: Democrats. Perhaps not in self-identification, but in voting behavior in opposition to what their former party has become. 010
