Admin make or break buildings. I love working for a principal who knows what she wants, isn’t afraid to say she doesn’t have all the answers, and works to empower teachers. I might have missed my midafternoon nap, but I’m so excited for the possibilities this year holds.

On the day before school starts, naturally I decided today was the day I needed to start "Oathbound." I've been putting it off because I don't know when the last book is going to be published, but if I'm not done by the time school starts, there's a student who is going to be very angry with me.

I’m already exhausted by the respectability politics of this back to school season, specifically as it relates to dress code. Bonnets don’t stop kids from learning, and Black girls don’t need more policing in schools. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

As expected, July Espo is regretting many of May Espo's choices. The biggest one was not labeling the box with the scissors in it.

When your new classroom, in a new building, has no windows or AC, you find a great space in the lobby-ish area and sit down to work.

I'm attending a conference in Nashville in July. Am I already looking through the schedule to find out what interests me? YES Am I thinking about what new notebook and pens I'll need to attend this conference? ALSO YES. I know I'm a dork, but I love a good conference.

A group of disingenuous right-wing extremists have started an online hate campaign against an educator I know and respect. If you believe in the US Constitution, public education, and civil rights: we need you. Data and graphic by Kelly Jenkins.
My name is Chanea Bond, and I've been teaching at Southwest High School for seven years. For the last three of those years, I have worked with Shayma Alzubi, and it came as no surprise to learn that she was promoted to the role of principal. I've watched her serve the SHS community tirelessly as an assistant principal, and anyone with eyes could see that she'd be phenomenal at leading a school.
What came as a shock, though I'm embarrassed to admit this in hindsight, is the racism, xenophobia, and bigotry spouted from fringe members of the Fort Worth community because the district posted a picture of Alzubi smiling and wearing her hijab. What's even more of a shock is how, instead of standing against the very racism, xenophobia, and bigotry that make this world less safe for our own marginalized students, Fort Worth ISD caved and, in doing so, communicated that Alzubi's differences: in appearance, in faith, and potentially in politics, are more important than her character, expertise, and commitment to the students of FWISD. I've witnessed, with my own eyes, Alzubi make strides with students other people have written off because she cares.
She listens. She shows up. The data is clear: SHS is a better place in part because of the leadership and guidance of Shayma Alzubi.
When y'all got here, you made it a point to let folks know that you've seen the data and students in FWISD deserve more; you all said that FWISD students deserve the best. So, in this first major test of your leadership, you get to decide what message to send and who you're actually here for. If you're here to make lives better for students: the choice is clear. Stand against the nonsensical political theatre and support Shayma Alzubi. Give her the opportunity to prove folks wrong about what it means to be different. Keep your promises and make FWISD a place that does not tolerate and capitulate to hate.
Remember: our children are watching you.
We're all watching you, and your decision will tell us ex…Data showing progressive growth

This is it. Last day of school. I've taught here for 18 years and today is the last day it will exist in its current form. Two days of packing up all the things that go with being an upper elementary school and next week it begins its next chapter as an early learning center. It's been a great run.

It is tragic that an educational book published in 2026 to address secondary reading issues needs to devote space to say that learning styles are a myth.

Please, when July/August Espo is complaining about all the crap she's unpacking, remind her that May Espo made very questionable choices. I offer you two phrases with which to start: Sorry you're unhappy with the consequences of your choices. Proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance.

Back to packing today. I have to keep reminding myself that so far, 1/2 of my boxes are writing supplies for next year's 6th grade team. Mostly trying not to panic abt the fact I'm sharing a classroom with 8 other people and all of our programs come w/lots of resources that need to fit in that room.

You know what bothers me? Kids who won't ask questions because somehow they think they're bothering me. Answering questions is my whole literal job. Sometimes the answer is "What do the directions say?" Sometimes the answer is, "Hey, that's a really cool question, what do you think?"

Snuck out of my current school to visit the elementary school I worked at until 2023 so I could watch the kids I met in second grade walk through the halls in their caps and gowns to the cheers of the current elementary kids. It was mighty dusty in that building this afternoon.

There is no tired like May teacher tired, especially when people keep asking you for information that is/has been included in 12 different forms of communication. It is exhausting when you have to repeatedly tell people things that were communicated to them both verbally AND in writing.

Well. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Tomorrow we're having a "Farewell Walker" party. I've been packing the last few weeks, so my desk area is...an absolute wreck. Now it's all in a cabinet, kind of like everything used to go under my bed when I was 10.

We have 17 days left. We end two days early bc our school is closing & we need time to pack. This crate is going with me so that I can get a lot of work done during my two months “off”. For the first time in 3 years, I can actually start planning for the long term. There are so many possibilities.

THIS PART. While this is specifically abt HW, the transactional nature of school is quickly becoming the hill I'm going to die on. HOW do we fix this? I need kids & teachers to care abt learning. I need all the people to care abt learning & kids being able to show off what they've learned.

A lot of folks aren’t gonna like this or agree and that’s okay! But I ask that you consider the argument and how it shows up in your world and learning spaces. #Blackexcellence in practice harms Black folks, Black children specifically, and it’s crucial that we interrogate that harm.
The most consequential moral and ethical concern I confront in my journey to establish
and nurture a liberatory practice as an educator-leader is breaking my allegiance to the myth of
*Black excellence.' Out of the fear, shame, and humiliation of the legacy of slavery, an insidious
idea that Black people have to be more, or even MOST, excellent to overcome the burden of our ancestors was born. Black excellence is a response to systemic racism that aligns with the white
supremacist notion that Black people have no inherent value; our value lies in conformity to
white supremecist values and ideologies. Black excellence is harmfully weaponized against
Black people; in order to be human, you must be excellent, though no social status, good grades,
community service, innocence, moral superiority, religious values, etc can shield us from the
mortal dangers of antiblackness. Black teachers (myself included) too often perpetuate
antiblackness against Black children by weaponizing Black excellence. When Black children in
schools do not adhere to white supremacist expectations and sensibilities, they are scolded and
punished in the name of preserving and upholding white supremacism in Black face.
The truth is, in the world we must work toward, Black children should never bear the
burden of excellence in order to earn childhood. They should not be expected to perform white
supremacist excellence to be treated with dignity, respect, and humanity. Creating learning
spaces where Black children can fail and fall with lovingkindness and grace, because they are
children and children must fail to grow and to learn, is liberatory theory as praxis.
