Even my engineer dad - who I've NEVER known to read a book for himself - read to me. And when a certain fantasy series started to become well-known when I was a teen, I also piled into my parents' bed with my younger siblings so my mom could read it to us. I can't imagine my childhood without that.

The thread is primarily about the value of reading to your kids, but this is the central thing about current tech offerings that's getting increasingly dystopian to me.

Been listening to this record a lot lately and thinking about how lucky I was to find out about this band over 20 years ago. It's a shame more people never for the chance to find them back in the day and they quickly tipped into obscurity... This record really holds up. youtu.be/hZ4tKZUa-Vw

Today's #enshittification: company my building uses for laundry finally fixed the washers that were out of service for a month, and in the process, removed the coin slots and forced us into paying w/ an app that often doesn't work and takes forever to load, while simultaneously tripling the price.

Same re: moving to the Midwest. (Fall here feels like it lasts about a week to my high desert raised ass.) The trick for me in recent years is that my dog LOVES cold weather, so seeing his pure joy when I take him out helps a ton. But I don't know if he'd feel the same much further north.

It's so cringe worthy that watching with sound off (no gaudy music) and not looking at his face is the only way to handle this... But there are a few moments that are so stupid they made me actually cackle.

I loved the Scholastic Book Fair, and I'm still an avid reader and a devoted member of a book club... And yeah, I think I hate this, maybe even more than I hate the other bar/restaurant pop-ups.

I've been playing Catfishing lately, and I felt pure delight a few days ago when the book I'm currently in the middle of was one of the answers (Neuromancer). Imagine my additional delight when one of today's answers was a book I read just a few months ago. 🪐📚💙
Screenshot of a browser game called Catfishing from August 2, 2026. Clues are "1970s LGBTQ novels, 1974 novels, 1974 English-language novels, 1974 science fiction novels, American gay-related novels, American post-apocalyptic novels, Fiction about schizophrenia, LGBTQ speculative fiction novels, Metafictional novels, Novels by Samuel Delany"

Can't eat fresh food because of the parasite. Can't breathe fresh air because of wildfire smoke. And locally, couldn't drink fresh water all weekend because of a boil order following a water main break (fortunately, the boil order's been lifted). I'm tired, ya'll.

I'm BEGGING businesses - stop adding "high tech" gadgetry to your services and acting like it serves your customers better when what it actually does is adds frustration. Yes, this applies to companies requiring a new app for everything, but also applies to so much more.

I have *finally* picked up my copy of @danozzi.bsky.social's 'Sellout.' Only in chapter one, but I'm already a little in awe, because it's clear he did a ton of research and interviews, but the writing is just so tight and lively and doesn't overly rely on quotes.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're a former swim team kid who still likes to get in a workout in the pool, but you don't want to join a masters team, and the normal sources for writing workouts (swimplan etc) really aren't cutting it... Swimdojo.com is the secret.

The replies to this post are fascinating. On the one hand, so many new books to add to my ever-growing TBR. On the other hand, some of them are not at ALL where I'd start with the writers mentioned. 😬

Recently realized I can clock folks at the pool who were swim team kids before they even get in the water - it's something about the selection of suit/cap. Once in the water, it's in the intensity of their stroke. Been wondering if runners etc can tell which adults were cross country/track kids.

Recently actually listened to the lyrics of "Who Can It Be Now?" by Men at Work, and I'm shocked it's not a millennial anthem, given that it's about pretending you're not home when someone knocks on your front the door.

Finally watched the docu about the Matches, which is sending me down a rabbit hole of what the guys have been up to since. When searching for music, I found out Shawn is now writing and illustrating children's books. Something about that makes me so damn happy, because it just feels so right.
