Even my engineer dad - who I've NEVER known to read a book for himself - read to me. And when a certain fantasy series started to become well-known when I was a teen, I also piled into my parents' bed with my younger siblings so my mom could read it to us. I can't imagine my childhood without that.

Phew! I never know what meds are more troublesome than others when there's mishaps like this. You're definitely not the first to make that mistake though. (I don't know what we'd do without a whole pill case system in my house.)

The thread is primarily about the value of reading to your kids, but this is the central thing about current tech offerings that's getting increasingly dystopian to me.

(And the thing is - if the vax is going to make me flare, an actual infection will do worse. And there's a non-zero chance my hives began as a post-Covid thing. Pre-gamed the shot with a high dose of my normal antihistamine, but also thank truff for Xolair which is actually doing the heavy lifting.)

Got mine yesterday, despite the potential it'll make my idiopathic hives flare up. So far, so good!

Been listening to this record a lot lately and thinking about how lucky I was to find out about this band over 20 years ago. It's a shame more people never for the chance to find them back in the day and they quickly tipped into obscurity... This record really holds up. youtu.be/hZ4tKZUa-Vw

Today's #enshittification: company my building uses for laundry finally fixed the washers that were out of service for a month, and in the process, removed the coin slots and forced us into paying w/ an app that often doesn't work and takes forever to load, while simultaneously tripling the price.

Same re: moving to the Midwest. (Fall here feels like it lasts about a week to my high desert raised ass.) The trick for me in recent years is that my dog LOVES cold weather, so seeing his pure joy when I take him out helps a ton. But I don't know if he'd feel the same much further north.

Have fun! I took a train from Chicago to Albuquerque last winter - much shorter ride, but had a blast (though I'd need a sleeper car to do a longer trip). I really loved just hanging out in the lounge car with a book and my crafts.

The horse dancing and then the small spaceship flying over is just 😙🤏 He knows he has enough money to actually buy all this anachronistic armor, and learn to ride a dancing horse, and hire a film crew to shoot all these scenes with practical effects so he feels like he's really there, right?

It's so cringe worthy that watching with sound off (no gaudy music) and not looking at his face is the only way to handle this... But there are a few moments that are so stupid they made me actually cackle.

Genuinely curious what apps Mr. Mann uses. Because on the one hand, so many tools are web-based now so I don't even install many apps on my computer these days. On the other hand, the ones I do have are designed well and well-tested, and I can't see something I vibe coded rising to that standard.

Yeah, exactly that - I figure it's either them trying to get a woman's attention via her dog, or they're trying to prove they have more control over a woman's dog than she does by getting it to respond in some way. Either way, so weird.

Among the number of situations in which the person complaining is what actually makes the whole thing completely intolerable, this might be at the top.

Fascinating thread bc I get the opposite in a still gross way - we mostly avoid people (reactive dog), but certain men (and it's always men) go out of their way to make noises at my dog to get his attention when I'm walking him. When I told my bf about this, he said he'd never once had that happen.

Can't eat fresh food because of the parasite. Can't breathe fresh air because of wildfire smoke. And locally, couldn't drink fresh water all weekend because of a boil order following a water main break (fortunately, the boil order's been lifted). I'm tired, ya'll.

Today's example: brought my car in for standard maintenance. They texted me a video of the tech telling me about some of the inspection items - but the audio is too garbled to know what's going on. Plus having to watch a video in a noisy waiting room sucks anyway for all sorts of other reasons.

I'm BEGGING businesses - stop adding "high tech" gadgetry to your services and acting like it serves your customers better when what it actually does is adds frustration. Yes, this applies to companies requiring a new app for everything, but also applies to so much more.

I'm also amused that even in this first chapter, about Green Day and 924 Gilman and Lookout Records (which all felt a bit like ancient history by the time I found the punk scene for myself), I'm still coming across names of people I knew from my time working at record labels and PR firms.

I have *finally* picked up my copy of @danozzi.bsky.social's 'Sellout.' Only in chapter one, but I'm already a little in awe, because it's clear he did a ton of research and interviews, but the writing is just so tight and lively and doesn't overly rely on quotes.

Limited edition Oreos hooked me with the perfect rice crispy treat ones well over a decade ago and I've been (mostly unsuccessfully) chasing that high ever since. Too often, they're just way too sweet or sugary candle flavored. Haven't opened my package of the BTS ones yet but 🤞

Love her - and Emily St. John Mandel for similar reasons. For Egan, I rec The Candy House (for people who like more contemporary, near future stories) or Manhattan Beach (1940s era). For Mandel, I rec The Glass Hotel (for contemporary fiction), and Station Eleven (for apocalyptic but hopeful).

The replies to this post are fascinating. On the one hand, so many new books to add to my ever-growing TBR. On the other hand, some of them are not at ALL where I'd start with the writers mentioned. 😬
