I think what it comes down to is that a lot of journalists like the idea of being crusaders on the front lines. they want to be the brave guy standing in front of the dangerous president and exuding their Brave Journalist Vibes at him so naturally they had a vested bias against President Normal

so naturally, their incentives end up being to get the more interesting and dangerous guy in office, because then their job is more fun. at the end of the day, these people's lust for access and secrets and big scoops is antithetical to the whole point of journalism
