With the whirlwind of the start of term (hopefully!) beginning to settle, have you taken time to reflect on what you could share with the history teaching community? Submit your proposal before 5 October: buff.ly/hoc001V

Does anyone know where I can start with reading about historical narratives, their creation and how teachers can help unpick these? Thank you in advance.

A local, outward looking Church is looking to raise £50,000 to make a piece of stained glass about Equiano and his family (his daughter is buried in the church yard). Please do donate if you can, even if it is very little: standrews-chesterton.org/the-equiano-... Do contact me for more information!

This summer has been filled with listening and reading all about London. Part of that is booking theatre tickets. Would anyone like to join me?

Tomorrow I am going to try and finish a load of reading and will be found in the @waterstones.bsky.social Cafe in Cambridge, the last time I did this I walked out with 5 books - I must really get through my own to read pile! There are ten books at present!

My former student teacher and I met on Wednesday for a walk. He’s just finished his ECT and I’m thrilled he’s still thinking that teaching is an exciting and vital profession. He’s a true asset to the teaching community- full of joy and enthusiasm for the best history educational experiences.

400 years ago today, a codfish was gutted at Cambridge Market. 🐟   Inside it was a tiny book containing Protestant texts from the early years of the English Reformation.   Was this a providential message from God, a piece of political propaganda or an elaborate hoax? Music by Julius H. from Pixabay

Anyone explicitly teach continuity explicitly? We do so as part of change but I’m interested in what continuity could look like for history teachers. Thank you so far to L (not on here), @egcarr.bsky.social and @alistairdickins.bsky.social

Do you know an inspirational UK based history teacher? Historic Royal Palaces has launched the ‘Inspiring History Teaching Awards’ which recognises the work of teachers who ignite a love and appreciation for the past. I’m so grateful to be a judge for the Eastern Region.

Michael Rosen poem:

I lay in bed hardly able to breathe
but there were people to sedate me, pump air into me
calm me down when I thrashed around hold my hand and reassure me play me songs my family sent in turn me over to help my lungs shave me, wash me, feed me check my medication perform the tracheostomy
people on this 'island of strangers' from China, Jamaica, Brazil, Ireland India, USA, Nigeria and Greece.

I sat on the edge of my bed and four people came with a frame and supported me or took me to a gym
where they taught me how to walk between parallel bars or kick a balloon
sat me in a wheel chair
taught me how to use the exercise bike how to walk with a stick how to walk without a stick people on this 'island of strangers' from China, Jamaica, Brazil, Ireland India, USA, Nigeria and Greece.

If ever you're in need as I was
may you have an island of strangers
Like I had
