Blue cheese & lightly caramelized onions, with some mozz for structure.

Good news everyone! I still know how to make an omelet! cc: @pupppy.bsky.social
A big, bangin' omelet with a small pile of onions on top. A second big, bangin' omelet, but I didn't have any more spare onions.

... Now that I say that, the trend does frequently smack of "fanfic au"--taking an existing story and rewriting it to suit your tastes, your tropes, your preferred themes, your ships, your ocs... Not just updating it, personalizing it to the creators' taste and interests.

Some of them, I think, are the closely-related "studio wants to use their safe, profitable IP but doesn't actually care about the end product, so they give it to creators who slap it like a coat of paint onto whatever story they feel like telling". No way WEDNESDAY isn't a reskinned tumblr fic.

Sometimes, when she's being sociable (like just now when I got her to take a churu from me) she'll pause and look over to Ray to make sure he's okay, which is adorable.

A big part of that gap is probably because Egon got a bit of forced socialization early on, when she got tangled in a neighbor's hockey net and had to be extracted and rushed to the vet by my partner & her sister-in-law. She's been more human-tolerant ever since.

Egon is still a little shy of me--sometimes I can pet her, even on the paws and belly, but sometimes she's leery--but otherwise has decided she's cool with being baby. Ray is still in "find a cave and stay there" mode, which is honestly much more normal.

Kittens (who, again, have never lived indoors) went to the vet yesterday, and were widely lauded as basically the chilliest cats to ever endure a medical examination (including our extant cats, who are already pretty well-behaved). Also, as we had begun to suspect, Egon is a girl.

They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

I had no idea what the reality was until I read Baldwin's "Going To Meet The Man" in college (and my second run at college, no less). I'm not sure anyone could lay it out any clearer. Although that is, uh, possibly not one to put on a high school syllabus.

Oh. Oh buddy. Have you not heard the tales? Those that taste of the cheerwine can never leave the Mid-Atlantic. They are consigned to those moderately pleasant climes forevermore, to live out their days arguing about barbecue and college basketball.

I mean, you should just play Iconoclasts, you really should. Great story, and one of the bad guys is a top 5 villain in fiction for me I think. Plus it just plays good, fun to explore, bosses are great.

Circumstance has conspired to increase our cat count by two: Introducing Egon (left; named, one assumes, for Austrian impressionist Egon Schiele) and Ray (right; formally named "My Nephew, Raymond West, the Novelist").
Photo of two small cats. The one on the left is black and white, sitting by a bowl of water, looking up; the one on the right is orange, laying in a cat carrier.

We'd probably have taken their mom in, as well, but a) two additional cats is already pushing it for this apartment and b) she had a second litter a couple weeks ago. Related, if anyone in the eastern Massachusetts area wants a sweet cat and/or between one and four tiny kittens, hmu.

They were born a couple months ago in my partner's brother's detached garage. She's been looking out for them--and their mom, who we initially thought was feral but who turns out to be very sociable--ever since. This is their first time properly indoors, and they seem cautiously optimistic.

I don't know why, but sometimes it does feel like people who make podcasts are uniquely bad at accents and pronunciations. (I say this as someone with arguably LESS foreign language education/exposure than the average American.)

I really doubt I'd've been able to tolerate 40-80 hours of "Dylan is a badass now! Look how awesome and powerful he is!"
010
an undigested bit of beef @mrreciprocity.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Seeing this makes me so much more likely to play it now, because "you play as Dylan" was a big initial "no thank you" from me--CONTROL really wanted to make me care about him/their relationship but failed so bad that I resented the effort, and the first RESONANT trailer made him look way too cool.

This is definitely the kind of attention to detail you want to see in association with a device that can cause grevious harm.
Diagram of a rotary tool, with the parts labeled. However, because of a formatting error, part A is labeled "description" and the rest of the labels are all moved to the wrong spots.

This reminded me of a thing: I've been occasionally dipping into NIGHT COURT, an extremely dated childhood favorite with a good heart & a wildly problematic comic vocabulary. In season 2 there's a (good-hearted, problematic) episode called "Bull Gets A Kid", & the kid in question really struck me:
Screencap from Night Court:

Bull, a very large, very bald man in a bailiff's uniform, is leaning on a wooden partition--the one that separates the gallery from the rest of the courtroom--listening to a kid who is seated on the other side.

The kid (early teens) has short, dark hair and is wearing a slightly oversized varsity jacket and gesturing excitedly.

Subtitle reads: "'Move your butt.' Nobody ever said that to me before."

Dear people who assign genre categories to large databases: "Mystery" does not mean "any story in which something is mysterious". Please stop filing EVERY SINGLE HORROR AND SCIFI MOVIE UNDER "MYSTERY". 2001 IS NOT A MYSTERY. SAW IS NOT A MYSTERY. Jesus Christ, PROMETHEUS IS NOT A MYSTERY.

Someone should probably remind the producers of horror movies that they're not supposed to put ACTUAL INTENSE HORROR in *general-audience advertising*, because it is starting to become a problem.

Hey, remember how up until a month ago there were like a dozen websites where you could drop in any package tracking number and they'd pull up the tracking, and sometimes it even had better information than the actual shipping company? And now they're*literally all broken*?

I don't think pineapple gets enough credit for being the Most Consistent Fruit. Like, the worst pineapple you'll ever have is maybe five percentage points below the median. Is there any other fruit that even comes close in terms of sheer reliability?

Science fiction authors designing aliens need to aspire to at least the level of weirdness of a real bucket orchid. Coryanthes macrantha in my greenhouse this morning. Flower is approx 15 cm wide, 10 cm tall. 🌴🌱
A bucket orchid in shades of orange and yellow. The bucket is formed from the distal end of the labellum and the column. Glands drip liquid into the bucket. Bees falling into the bucket can only escape through a hole at one side where they will be forced into contact with the pollen and stigma at the end of the column. The hole is pretty large, so the bees must be equally big. The sepals look like big wings made of tissue paper that counterbalance the bucket. The base of the labellum where it connects to the rest of the flower looks like a weirdly ridged orange alien penis.

Like, when we say "art connects us", that's true, but I think it does so indirectly--it doesn't connect the observer to the artist (if there is one), it connects both to an external locus, and can connect us to innumerable other things at the same time.

I've always been pretty far down the "a work stands on its own" end of the spectrum--which is not to say I devalue the role of the creator (hell no), but I think the magic of art (& beauty, generally) is that it exists outside of us. Connecting to it, as observer or creator, anchors us to the world.
