Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

Dolly Parton was an incredible human being. Her efforts to promote children's literacy, driving economic growth in her home state of Tennessee, and her open acceptance of the LGBTQ community meant so much to so many people. Fly high Dolly 💙

Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...

Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

I know it’s not very elder-emo-sad-queer-girl of me, but after multiple full album listen-throughs, “Bobby” is my favorite song on the new Phoebe Bridgers album.

000

Katelyn (#1 Elaine May Fan) @mrbnatural10.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

This is, obviously, completely disregarding the fact that the new PB is largely about grieving the death of a parent with whom she had a fraught relationship, so I’m not sure I buy that it’s all that “happy.” But I guess the love song overrides that.

Katelyn (#1 Elaine May Fan) @mrbnatural10.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

As an elder emo, I appreciate the catharsis that comes from listening to an artist who seemingly understands the deep-in-your-bones pain of depression. But they also don’t owe you that over and over if it’s no longer serving them.

I remember something like 15 years ago, Dashboard Confessional shifted their sound and lyrics a bit, and Chris Carabba mentioned how draining it was singing these heart wrenching songs night after night.

I’ve heard more than a few people complaining about the new Phoebe Bridgers album being “too happy” and I just want to say that artists don’t owe you misery.

Also being disappointed that they made a fat character thin for a TV adaptation isn’t automatically racist. Black actors who are fat also exist.

Not to wade into the discourse but it would be nice is we had more than a single queer show that actually showcased body diversity and wasn’t canceled after 2 seasons.
