One minor downside to having a cat is they don't react when you're being intentionally ridiculous. I found out I made a mistake in my computer stuff and said "Oh well! You live and you learn! ...and you hang on the edge of tomorrow" and my cat looked at me nonchalantly like "yes those are words"

Just set up DNS host overrides in the new OPNsense router and it feels like some kind of magic to be able to access stuff in my network by name instead of IP! This is pretty neat, I'd been relying on a bookmarks folder previously. #homelab #networking

OPNsense router is up and running! It was... surprisingly uneventful. I haven't set up any of the advanced features yet, but those will come with time. For now the only functionality I've lost is Plex outside of my home network, but I can fix that later. #homelab #networking #OPNsense

New OPNsense router is mostly configured, running repeated iperf tests overnight to ensure the SFPs don't cause the PC to overheat. It won't be running full bore like this regularly, but it's good to do a burn-in test for mission-critical equipment. #homelab #networking

Extreme close-up of a Lenovo m920q tiny PC with a two-port 10G SFP+ NIC installed. There is a copper ethernet cable plugged into the main port and a copper Twinax 10G cable plugged into the left SFP port. The right SFP port is open.

There are a few small bits of... something at the edges of the 3D printed bracket, it's touch to tell if they're small hairs or small bits of plastic from the bracket itself.

Saved (some) money by ordering Direct Attach Copper Twinax cables, they should be here within the next few days. Two are new short ones from FS and eight(!) are 5m (16 ft) from eBay. This oughtta give me stuff to play with for a few months..! #homelab #networking

Well shoot, the Cisco SFP-10G-LRM SFPs specifically say "Not compatible" in my Brocade ICX-7250 switch. At this rate it might be cheaper to buy new SFPs for $30 each instead of buying eBay lots and finding they aren't the advertised speed/aren't compatible/etc... #homelab #networking

Did some further troubleshooting and fixed the fiber link to the living room, the cable wasn't fully seated in the SFP down in the basement. Also found that the new cheap unmanaged 10G switch doesn't have a bad SFP port, it's just bricked. Oh well! At least the 1G switch works fine. #networking

Today I found some (somewhat) cheap PCIe x1 cards exist that can act as FXS/FXO ports for telephone stuff. Ordered one now, I'm going to push the limits of my knowledge to bring one of my favorite game consoles online again. It will be thinking once more. #computers #networking #Sega #Dreamcast
