Interesting look at platforms' own policies on violent content. I assume that TV broadcast would be blocked by FCC rules, though who knows these days ....

We've probably learned more about American politics from the ANES than any other single data source. The same is true for the GSS and sociology. Both of these are gone if Congress acquiesces to these NSF cuts.

SCOTUSblog has been such an important resource for those of us who teach and research about the Supreme Court. It's not what it once was, and this article traces the developments that led us to the subpar version that it is today.

I think this is the thing that much of the public misses, but that anyone who professionally works with datasets understands very well. And every database has conventions that don't necessarily apply to other databases, so when you merge lots together as DOGE did, it always introduces error.

I didn't hold back. These centers are a blight on higher education and we should say so. dailyiowan.com/2026/09/15/u...
“Center for Intellectual Freedom is a really Orwellian name because they’re forcing mandatory classes on students who don’t want it,” Ray said. “Just as a matter of pure consistency, if closing African American Studies was just a financial decision, the center should be closed.” Ray said universities do a better job fostering free thought than any other institution — including churches, workplaces, and the military.

“You can say and do things at universities that you cannot do anywhere else,” he said. “So the notion that universities are a problem when it comes to free speech is just a lie.”

I just finished reading Nerd Reicht about Silicon Valley tech billionaires. From their own statements, they see AI as a way to destroy democracy and the state. As a political scientist, that's a GIANT reason to be AI cynical. The tech is designed to be system threatening to unis. Ugh. Good luck!

Rest in peace, Wendell Berry.
The Peace of Wild Things
Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Great song! Prine is just gold. We recently saw a documentary at the Speed about the multi-artist shows held in his honor since his death (in Nashville), and at the end, the whole theater was singing along to "Paradise" as played by his son. True tear jerker moment.

We just had a dean admit that they used AI to decide which staff members to fire...which came up because the supposed "savings" were based on incorrect (hallucinated?) salary information that made it seem like the firings were saving more money. What a time to be alive!

Arts & Sciences laid off a lot of full-time term instructors and then half a dozen staff over the summer because "we can't afford to cover the increased cost of health insurance." But there's always money in the banana stand for athletics and new shiny toys like AI systems (and new VPs)! Ugh.

Here in KY, the Republican legislature removed the governor's power to appoint replacements (once the governor was a Dem), so I am not even sure it is possible for Beshear to "just hold a special election" (even if it was a good idea, which it is NOT).

I've been teaching my National Security Law students about the "Alien Terrorist Removal Court" for 20 years. Now that the Trump administration is using it for the first time (ever), today's "One First" looks at what it actually *does,* why it exists, and where we should (and shouldn't) be concerned:
