"Waymo has told advocates that expecting it to respect bike lanes is 'too high a bar' because customers expect to be dropped off in them." To be crystal clear, it's illegal for a car to be in a bike lane. It doesn't matter what Waymo's customers expect; the company shouldn't be doing it.

'Hard to break the habit': Why free public transport isn't enough to shift from cars
Free public transport is a popular policy, but researchers say it's not enough to convince drivers to leave the car at home.

The dominant state-owned enterprise in transport, at least in the US, is road-building to encourage faster car traffic. This (a) competes with transit, (b) endangers pedestrians (all riders are pedestrians) and (c) promotes transit-inefficient development. 4/ …

New study from IIHS shows that car bloat is dangerous even at low speeds: If hit by a sedan going 27 mph, a pedestrian has a 60% chance of a moderate+ injury and 30% chance of a serious one. If it's a pickup going 27 mph, those odds rise to 83% and 63%, respectively. www.iihs.org/news/detail/...

even better, we should build infrastructure that makes bad driver behavior impossible: car free spaces, concrete protected bike lanes, BOLLARDS!! cheaper and more effective than cops or cameras. please consult the Triangle

The diagram lists strategies from top to bottom going from most effective to least effective. On the right, are those strategies applied to safer streets. In order:
- Elimination (Ban Cars)
- Substitution (Walking, Biking, Transit)
- Engineering (Curbs, Bollards, Barriers)
- Process (Signs, Education, Enforcement)
- PPE (Helmets, Hi-Viz, Shame flags)

One of the lesser-known legacies from Vancouver’s hosting of the 2010 Winter Olympics was significant transportation mode-shift that could usually take decades. We had to shift 30% of car trips DT during the Games, & specifically planned to keep most of that shift post-Olympics. POWERFUL catalyst.
Cover of Vancouver’s 2010 Olympics Transportation Plan which had to drop car trips into the downtown by 30% through mode shift to walking, biking and public transit trips, and planned to KEEP that shift post-Olympics.
