#Mathstoday Year 9 had a go at estimation today. They got on very well, pretty happy about how they did. Year 11 proved that once again they need more drawing linear lines practice so that's what we are doing tomorrow.

I've got an account! (London MathsConf) I did forget I had it until you sent that first message.

I've been looking through them tonight. Quite like the look of some of the Surd ones. (Teaching them after the holidays)

I made them draw a 7.4cm line in their books, then get their neighbour to measure it so try and solve the measuring issues. They were told the answers won't be exact as we are measuring to the nearest mm, they seemed fine with that.

I like how you have to find the area of the same triangles, but using different bases each time.

#Mathstoday Used this NCETM task today for finding the area of triangles. Students have to measure the base and height. The original sheet doesn't have the heights drawn on but for my group they needed that scaffolding. They need a bit more time in the next lesson but I'm happy how it went.

It was right near the end of the lesson, they'd gotten through the work much quicker than expected so couldn't delve too deeply. I think for some it was just easier to count, there was no miscounting. When I've done it before with a different group I've not had the same response.

I've spent a bit of time tweaking the Mixed Exercise resource today. Here's a one-click 15 question exercise covering the basics of right-angled trigonometry (lengths and angles, sin, cos and tan). mathsbot.com/unitMixed?id...

#Mathstoday Used this lovely Mathsbot task. So many of my students said the red shape had the greatest perimeter.

#Mathstoday Before I decide to give the maths helper Indices sheet to my Yr10 set 1 I decided to do these myself.... Can I say, this was a lot of fun

#Mathstoday Yr11 have been looking at quadratics as a whole, turning points, roots and Y-Intercept. They definitely need more practice but they are getting there.

#Mathstoday Year 10 had a go at this task that @andrewmaths1.bsky.social suggested. Scaffolded the questions before they had a go. Started with 2(x+1) + 5(x+1) pretty much all of them expanded then simplified after.

#Mathstoday Finally something my top set year 10 struggled on, algebraic proofs! I think they will be fine if that's what they are finally getting stuck on.

A sequences begins: 4, 6, 10, 16, ... Is it a quadratic or Fibonacci style sequence? Is it possible to be given five (or more) terms of a sequence and still be undecided?

#Mathstoday Year 8 have started looking at estimation today. They have 10 seconds to give a good estimation of this on their whiteboard. Made via Mathsbot

I made it myself. I should have it saved on my computer tho if you want a copy. DM me your email and I'll try and find it tomorrow.

#Mathatoday Year 9 practiced their division today, after realising they were really quite weak instead of moving on we practiced with these. Students cover the question with the answers (I have an answer sheet) and it's quite easy to check.

Absolutely shattered. Super fun Yr7 trip today. Got to go rock climbing and do Archery. The only maths today was scoring for the archery (well apart from all the planning I'm now doing)

Some of them are better than others. They need more practice but they are getting that tomorrow as I'm on a trip. (Seems pretty alright what it's a prime coefficient tho)

#Mathstoday One of the things I find is in the lesson students can factorise. As soon as you mix up the questions they can't do it. Got my Yr10 to have a go at these and it was unsurprisingly how much slower they were.

An Old Akkadian school text problem; only 4000 years old. I think they were interested in how to partition non-rectangular fields for inheritance purposes ... so for 2 brothers say, in the case of this problem. #UKMathsChat #iTeachMath
Old Akkadian school text IM 58045 showing a trapezium partitioned into two equal areas. The parallel sides of the trapezium are 17 and 7 units and the perpendicular distance between these sides is 12 units. The partition is made parallel to the sides of 17 and 7 units. Find the length of the partition line and its distance from the side of 17 units.

#Mathstoday 2/4 lessons were tests today. Yr10 had a go at some quite complicated factorising single brackets If anyone has some nice factorising problems I'd love to have them. They are a very strong group.

#Mathstoday Yr11 had a go at the mix volume and surface area of prisms sheet from Dr Austin. So many times the student was stuck just because they didn't read the question and was trying to find the surface area on a volume question. www.draustinmaths.com/_files/ugd/7...

As a trainee I don't think that would be unreasonable. People can use generative Ai if they know what a good example looks like... Pgce students don't have enough knowledge for that yet.

I was reminded of this task by @morrismaths359.bsky.social earlier this week. It's one of my favourites, so I've recorded a quick video to demonstrate how you can model a solution using prime factor tiles. Video in the next post...but first here's the task.
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Fill the blanks with the numbers above to make the calculation correct. One number is not used.

__ × __ × __ × __ = __ × __ × __ × __

I'm surprised it's that high even, I joined a grammar school for sixth form and white students were a small minority. The only thing I could say about all students was everyone really cared about their education that's what we all had in common.

#Mathstoday Year 8 really surprised me with how good they were at equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions today. Absolutely wizzed through it. Onto adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators next. (With mixed numbers too!)

In #MathsToday - Pie charts! Love this as a starting point for pie charts. Why can you work out what flag they are? Because of your ability to reason with proportion. You could make your own version of this using this flags tool shaheeilyas.com/flags/
