This feels like an incredibly alien take. Why would anyone care about this at all?

Just the other day I was saying this intersection I drive through regularly really should be an all way stop instead of just on the one side because of the hill being dangerous. Then I check and it is! Pretty great to see the street get safer. Thanks @freddieoconnell.bsky.social !

The best story ICE could make up, after 12 hours, is that ICE agents shot someone in the head because they believed the person they shot, who was not accused of any crime, was a different person also not accused of any crime, and so "public safety" required killing them on the spot.

Breaking: Tennessee Republicans pass new 9-0 gerrymander after SCOTUS destruction of Voting Rights Act eliminating state’s only majority-Black district & last Democratic seat. Splits Memphis, which is 63% Black, into 3 districts to disenfranchise Black voters. Quite literally a return to Jim Crow

This person should not hold any government office. This, along with innumerable other things, are clear evidence to any reasonable observer of his insanity. The other members of the United States government hold the power to remove him from office and have not. This is a clear moral failure.

Listen, there's a lot of reasons why this is an incredibly stupid idea. The logistics of moving load from a tanker (2 million barrel capacity) to trucks (200 barrel capacity), the number of people needed, drones, pickup point being a village... But one easy visual is to zoom out the map a little.
The region surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, showing that the area they're talking about having as a dropoff point contextualized by the surrounding area and shape of the Persian Gulf/amount of land controlled by Iran.

As someone who spent the first 18 years of their life growing up on a farm, and whose family has farmed for generations, seeing someone reduce the difficult labor that is farming to "it's plants and fresh air!" is honestly somewhat offensive. It is work. My family worked, and works, extremely hard.

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.
quote on a dark blue and purple background from Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), criticizing proposed cuts to science funding in the FY26 U.S. federal budget. The quote reads:

“If enacted, the FY26 budget request would end America’s global scientific leadership. The cuts to science would imperil our nation’s future health, security and prosperity. This budget proposal stands in stark contrast to the President’s call for a renewed commitment to American scientific leadership. Congress has demonstrated a bipartisan commitment to investment in research and must do so again to answer the President’s call.”
The quote is attributed to Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of AAAS and Executive Publisher of the Science family of journals. The AAAS logo appears at the bottom right.

How bad will it be? Catastrophic. Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come. But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget. Speak up now before it is too late. (inflation adjusted $-s below)
NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.

Flying to #Canada for summer vacation this year to go back and visit friends in Montreal (flying out of Nashville), and the price difference between flying now and a few months ago is stark. Canadians are certainly not flying to the US lately, for obvious reasons. That boycott is definitely hittin.
A price chart for two tickets flying from Nashville to Montreal, showing that the price for similar trips to Montreal (now priced under $600) was over $1000 dollars 60+ days ago.

This proposal is a disaster. It's mind boggling how much this, alongside existing cuts, will irreparably slow the scientific progress of the human race, harm our children's education, and damage our health as a society.

Study finds incorporating PRS into clinical prediction models provides limited improvements in performance bit.ly/3EUjUJT #machinelearning #genomicmedicine #EHR
Screenshot of Figure 1: Performance metrics (top: AUROC, bottom: AUPRC) are presented within each institution (left: VUMC, right: MGB) for each model scenario. Colors represent whether the model included PRS (Blue) or was based only on EHR data (Red). Models run on the genetics sample required five-fold nested cross-validation and each point represents the on split that is consistent across all models for comparability. Dashed lines represent the baseline performance in each site for the given metric.
