Every lens leaves a blur signature—a hidden fingerprint in every photo. In our new #TPAMI paper, we show how to learn it fast (5 mins of capture!) with Lens Blur Fields ✨ With it, we can tell apart ‘identical’ phones by their optics, deblur images, and render realistic blurs.

Because of my spinal injury, I was thinking that I wish I could have upside down belaying glasses so that I can hold a book or phone comfortably again and...this product exists, and is really inexpensive! They're called "lazy glasses" or "crochet glasses". Now to find out how well it works for me.

My lab will be recruiting at all levels. PhD students, postdocs, and a research engineering position (worldwide for PhD/postdoc, EU candidates only for the engineering position). If you're at SIGGRAPH, I'd love to talk to you if you are interested in any of these.

I put a massive number of changes in today's release of the new version of the #quadplay retro fantasy video game console. Available now at: morgan3d.github.io/quadplay/ The main focus of these changes was mobile: new aspect ratios, new battery saving optimizations, new exported game UI options.

20kts of wind makes for a lot of miles put away! I just marvel at the free energy of wind and current--I'm moving my *home* around with minimal effort, cost, and environmental impact, while sitting here making a sandwich and coffee enjoying the ride. #sailing

I retired 5 years ago at age 67. I feel that is when my “real career” began. I have never been more engaged, productive, and fulfilled. It was incredibly liberating to decide I could switch to working for no salary: no boss to argue with and working purely on topics that inspire me. It is magical.

It’s been 3,174 days since I escaped corporate life. I was 44. My children were tiny. Now they're teenagers. Today I turn 53, and we are infinitely happier here, in our farmhouse by the ocean. No more meetings. No more commute. If I can escape, you can too (because I'm a dumbass). #Life #Art

It was quite peaceful at this anchorage (and charming, including a tiny working commercial fishing dock). However, the names on the chart of Skull Rock, Massacre Bay, and Victim Island reflect tragically violent histories of tribal warfare among the Salish peoples in the area ~150 years ago.

Annual reminder to self: "My single threaded code can't have race conditions!" Does it use a clock? Poll input devices? Read from files? Send network packets? Then your code is mulithreaded. You just can't see the source code for the other threads. It *can* have race conditions and deadlocks.

On a modern mobile device HTML game, does it use less power if I issue fewer CPU instructions per frame or use fewer threads? How? Won't a browser end up keeping all cores filled with its other work? Aren't CPU cores fixed cost per cycle? Is there an indirect savings through fewer RAM operations?

I finally put Meridian's name on the hull! Now she's properly able to introduce herself. I spent the rest of the day re-provisioning, watering, recharging, and cleaning (with a few breaks for video meetings on AI and some debugging!) to prepare for the next few weeks of sailing.

Mmmm. Crispy new sails! Here's a tiny Aero 6 for racing in "Small Craft Advisory" conditions on its own tiny carbon mast. I use up a set of sails every season when seriously competing. I can't even practice now with my spine in bad shape, but am optimistically prepping for gear for next spring.

MacBook Air M2 physical res is 2560x1664. It reports this to apps as 1470x956 @ 2x HiDPI pixel ratio. (The aspect ratio includes removing the menu bar/notch.) I don't understand the reported width. 2560 / 2 = 1280, not 1470! That's 1.74x, not 2x. I expected 1280x720 @ 2x. Help! What's happening?

Done with the long Torqeedo tiller upgrade to Degree, so I can sit at the front and be flat. "Just" replacing the tiller involved borrowing tools to get to some very hard to reach screws, taking everything apart twice for more lubrication, and changing storage mount on the mothership.
