Something new for me this year: I let a few of my small fall cabbages overwinter, so that they'd go to flower this year & I can collect them seeeeeds. So far, so good! 🌱 #localonly #zone7a #smallfarmlife #veggiegardening #seedsaving

The garden bed in the center of the photo has several white plastic arches attached to it, which are holding a fine mesh white fabric draped over the whole bed, to protect the cabbages from destructive cabbage moths.

Peas & Strawbs remain unscathed from the frosty temps, but the taters have a wee tinge of frostbite. Nothing they can't bounce back from, but if we can kindly be done with the freezing night temps, that'd be great 🌱 #localonly #smallfarmlife #veggiegardening #freakinfrost

We've amassed quite a collection of old sheets, blankets, and tablecloths over the years that, in their retirement, have become both painting dropcloths & blankies for wee babes in unpredictable April weather 🌱 #localonly #veggiegardening #smallfarmlife #frostwarning #friggincold

Spent the first taste of springtime-type temps of 2026 in the greenhouse, both stewing over the latest fresh hell that is the news today, and embracing the tradition of spring cleaning in preparation of starting fresh new life 🌱 #localonly #zone7a #smallfarmlife #greenwitch

Thank you! 😊 We don't heat it currently; it's actually where we grow all our berries. We pull the plastic off both the ends in the summer months, cos behind the plastic is chicken wire. So in the heat it can breathe, but birds & deer are kept away from our fruit!

Hubs hooked me up with a custom snow remover for the hoop house (duck taped a push broom to an extension pole). Worked like a charm! 🌱 #localonly #smallfarmlife #gardensky #snowday #witchsky #greenwitch

The ground all around is covered in snow.Photo of the entrance end of a hoop house (AKA polytunnel) surrounded by a thick blanket of snow and snow still falling heavily from the sky. There is no snow piled on top of the hoop house, however, because it was all removed with the extension pole broom.

Yes, a worship service is sacred. So is the image of God in your immigrant neighbor. So is the image of God being dragged from his home in his underwear on a snowy day. So was the image of God that bled out for 8 minutes while being refused medical care.

I am one of those folks who, in January, is in no rush for winter to end. I appreciate & embrace the cold & the dark, and let hibernation mode fully have me. Plus the snow is just so dang pretty. I'll be singing a different tune come March 1st, but for today, winter is a welcome friend.

Been a hot minute since I've shared a garden update here; our schedules have been maxed out & we've been riding that ragged edge of total burnout. Thankfully the cool crisp Autumn air has finally arrived, & we're staying busy with fall chores. & October is one of my absolute favorite things 🍁🍂
The view down the central path of raised garden beds. Most of the beds have buckwheat cover crop poking up through a layer of straw. Marigolds still bloom, and green bean plants hang on even though some leaves are brown & wilted from the first frost. A wicker basket, ceramic bowls, and large rubber bucket are filled with today's pepper & green bean harvests. Some chicken friends can be seen in the background, wandering around their run.2 raised beds with green buckwheat poking up through a layer of straw are in the foreground. The neighboring bed has broccoli & cabbage growing happily under insect netting. In the background is another row of beds with blooming calendula & buckwheat.A bed of thriving calendula flowers, blooming in shades of golden yellow to pinky-peach

This round was freshly-cut herbs, but sometimes I'll let them dry just for a day or two before bundling them up. If they're completely dry, they just crumble while winding the string around - makes a big ol' mess! But smells great! 😊

Gah, squash vine borers are a constant pain in our neck! We've been pretty good this year about checking every day for eggs, nymphs, & adults, and killing them by squishing or drowning. As a last resort, we'll spray the base of the plant (not leaves or flowers) with BT; not 100% effective, though 🤷‍♀️
