It for sure saved lives! Making divorce easier and unilateral had an enormous impact
Screenshot of the abstract from Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers’ 2006 Quarterly Journal of Economics paper, “Bargaining in the Shadow of the Law: Divorce Laws and Family Distress.” Using differences in when U.S. states adopted unilateral divorce, the authors find that the reform was associated with an 8–16% decline in female suicide, roughly a 30% decline in domestic violence for both men and women, and a 10% decline in women murdered by their partners. The authors argue that unilateral divorce can both help end abusive relationships and increase the bargaining power of abused spouses within relationships that continue.

What’s the evidence on rent control? I charted the findings from 112 studies: Great for rent-controlled tenants ✅ But: Pushes up rents for other people ❌ Pushes down new housing construction ❌ Pushes down building quality ❌

we could solve the western water crisis overnight by simply charging alfalfa farmers market rates for water
Across the basin, alfalfa hay uses more than 5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water — that's 26% of all the water consumed in the basin. One acre-foot roughly equals the annual water use of two or three households.
In the Upper Basin, irrigated agriculture consumes 2.8 million acre-feet, or nearly half the water used by Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, the environment, reservoirs and water exports out of the basin. Cattle-feed crops, like alfalfa, consume 90% of all water used by Upper Basin agriculture.
That means alfalfa uses more water than cities, commercial users and industries across the entire basin:
Collectively, these users consume about 3.5 million acre-feet, or 18%, of the river's water. The Colorado River

Some poptimists not only want pop music to be taken seriously by critics (which I agree with, critics should be doing that!) but that we all must cheer on the same pop music. Leave me alone!

Estrangements aren't uncommon, and there's SOME polling suggesting they might be increasing (which does not an epidemic make), but there's no data showing that they're largely unjustified, and certainly no robust evidence that therapists, en masse, are causing them

Wrong. This is an ag policy problem. Residential water use is a pittance compared to the water resource demands of the cattle industry.

Air travel is also objectively safer these days. Yes, it was funny to meme about "Trump take plane," but it's just true. Flying is WAY safer now than it was 40 years ago

Yes, the very low end of basic economy sucks ass, but also allows people to fly nearly anywhere without spending a fortune
