How does that help pay the bills? How does that alleviate the major struggles of our own farmers and cattlemen? What part of any of this actually has a tangible benefit? The mental gymnastics to the nnnnth (yes, on purpose) degree that many will go to is something I never will wrap my head around.

The WH proposed budget for FY27 has been released. More of the same rhetoric from last year, with sweeping cuts on the backs of fallacious claims. Of note for Dept. of Commerce: NOAA: $1.6B reduction NIST: $993M reduction NTIA: $2.2B reduction More info should appear in the coming weeks... Ugh.

I don't think people understand that if you shut down the government, ICE and CBP do NOT shut down. They're funded by supplemental money from the BBB. That's why dems are separating the DHS funding bill and asking for restrictions. I want them to demand a rescission of that funding or shut DHS down

Based on data from this recent recon pass, as well as other commentary from experts here, it is fair game to suspect that #Melissa is finding a way to continue strengthening.

AF308-2013A mission reconnaissance observation of peak 10-second average flight level winds for Hurricane Melissa valid as of 1701 UTC. The salmon-colored wind barbs indicate an excess of 137 kt (~157 mph). Pressure observations in mb/hPa are overlaid near the center of the storm.

And #Melissa is now a major hurricane. If we assume a window of time beginning at 15 UTC (11 AM EDT) as the baseline, Melissa has gone from a 60 kt tropical storm to a 100 kt Category 3 hurricane in roughly 12 hours. **40 kt in 12 hrs** Unfortunately, no signs of slowing down in the short term…

This shouldn't even be a particularly "hot" take in the sense that it's objectively & quantitatively correct! In formal studies on return on investment for federally funded research at universities, the enormous value is very clear. It is even (dare I say it?) a very *efficient* public expenditure.
