also, it's much, much easier to take something that is Hammered Shit and carve/edit away at it to make it less and less shit, than it is to create something flawless from whole cloth on a blank page.

focusing on fine details or perfection too early in the creation process is a tempting but ultimately counter-productive move. but also, letting your first draft suck ass means you can be as experimental or self-indulgent or lazy as you want while creating it. the first draft is just for you!

first draft sucking means the first draft is doing its job! I want you to picture what the giant marble block that became Michelangelo's David looked like during the early stages of carving it - pure lumpy garbage. Same with the rough thumbnails of every comic or manga you've ever loved.

now to go back to editing instead of the time honored tradition of yowling about writing as a substitute for actual writing.

to use a silly but useful metaphor, it's a bit like really good fashion. are the clothes right? do the pieces all work together? okay good. now do the clothes FIT? do they need to be tailored? do they fall correctly against the body? then finally, selecting appropriate accessories + makeup.

often more than three times honestly. usually I have to make sure I have the actual content right first (is this what the character is actually meant to be doing in this scene?) then making sure the emotional beats match and land correctly. then finally addressing the actual words and phrasing.

annoyed at just how much of good writing is nothing but repeated editing... not all at once, mind, because that would be at least straightforward if not easy. but no. my writing turns out best when I've had a chance to look at the same sequence with fresh eyes at LEAST 3 times.
