Yeah, that's what I meant with the second part of that - several widely-followed members and their moots use it, but it's by no means consistent practice across the whole site. Anyway, in this *particular* case, I could have just said 'BHA', since you're one of the few from that gang anyway!

It's not really a matter of there being no alternative platforms or systems so much as it's a collective action problem of moving a ton of people from one network to another.

(sorry, was defaulting to the BSky nomenclature of referring to one's partner with a single capital letter, which is neither consistent nor universal)

So, many countries are devolving into rule by aristocratic courtly intrigue, some weirdoes are penning polemics at the pope, a bunch of bizarre apocalyptic cults are sprouting up, and now there's a plague outbreak? Anything else I'm missing on our glorious return to, uh... the Thirty Years War?

I always worry about this a little because FB is THE platform for indigenous communication and networking in Canada and at least some of the US. I'm sure many of them know all about the problems of Meta, but moving such a huge established, widely-dispersed network like that is REALLY difficult.

Alberta separatists have gone to D.C. offering fresh water and oil in exchange for American support – and Republican operatives have provided tactical assistance inside the province

your feelings are valid == you are allowed to feel what you feel
your feelings are valid =/= whatever actions you take based purely on your emotions is reasonable and right
your feelings are valid. that doesn't mean your understanding of a situation is correct; it doesn't mean you haven't misunderstood something; it doesn't mean you have the right to hurt someone else because you feel hurt, or unhappy, or sad, or angry, even if they obviously 'deserve it for how they made you feel
your feelings are valid; you are not wrong for feeling whatever way you feel. But just because you feel something doesn't make it true

My therapist used to say “your feelings are evidence but they aren’t the verdict” and boy if that hasn’t kept me out of trouble

Really fucked up actually that the "you are valid" culture which, usefulness and uh, validity thereof aside, was intended to provide some some perspective for people who may have been blamed for harmless things they could not control morphed into if strangers on the internet do not constantly tell me I'm good and perfect they are the oppressor" and "even constructively and gently telling me that I hold some power and responsibility to seek a better situation is an unspeakably cruel act."
kaurwreck Follow
Once, in an argument with my therapist about a decision I made to antagonize my mother, I snapped, "My feelings are valid," and he shot back, "They're valid because they're real, but that doesn't make them rational.*
It was a more nuanced and tailored conversation after that, but that particular quote struck me especially and made me realize how often I was conflating "valid" with "reasonable" or "justified."

I've been gradually drifting more and more to the opinion that social media is mainly bad because of terrible platform owners/operators, rather than any innate quality of online socialization.

I'm sure industry fraud specialists have graphs that say X% of website attacks end in *this* scam and Y% in *that* scam, but individual cases often felt like quantum uncertainty, even with the same idiots; neither you nor they knew what they were gonna try until they tried it.

Monghoul (ooga-booga) @mongrel.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
We know they only have to be persistent and spam wide attacks till one of their numbers comes up. The lottery's great if you're buying tickets way below cost, or even free! Sure, website scammers must make money *somehow*, but I wonder if their successes feel like the dog catching the car.

Like, I used to do fraud investigations. Say you've got a bag of hammers, but then you look down and the weight of the hammers has torn out the bottom of the bag and all the hammers are on the floor. One's fallen on your foot. That's how dumb some of these guys are.

Some of the Germans companies might have something of similar quality, but I don't know their offerings, and I *do* know that for every one German company that maintains that vaunted historic quality, another three have given up and just dump out the same flimsy crap everyone else does.

I have an Andis trimmer for close trimming (I don't always shave clean, just trim down to stubble) and a bigger Wahl trimmer (which is really for hair but can be used on your face if you're gentle). They're both beastly things, overbuilt to hell and back, meant to survive hours of use daily.

Monghoul (ooga-booga) @mongrel.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
For corded electric shaving stuff, look into some of the big industrial-quality American brands if you can find them, Andis or Wahl.
