I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Some good news for a change: Overcoming a massive and aggressive tech lobby and a squeamish, Silicon Valley-friendly governor, the labor movement has managed to pass a raft of first-of-their-kind AI laws aimed at protecting workers in California.

This is really deeply my attitude towards clothing: mutual flourishing! When I say I’m into fashion it’s in a “I love all the ways people express themselves through garments!” way and never ever in a “ew that’s so last season” way

A thread devoted to Jacob Lawrence, one of most acclaimed American painters of the 20th century, born #OnThisDay in 1917. Fitting that today is Labor Day since work & labor were among his most enduring themes. First up: Home Chores, 1945, painted soon after he returned from military service in WWII

A wild story that sums up so much about this moment. Rare books bought up by a hyperscaler, driven across the country by truck, scanned and fed into the woodchipper by low wage workers so the rich can build and own systems that squeeze, surveil, and automate labor and control knowledge generation.

Computer scientist Margaret Hamilton coined the term “software engineer.” She directed the Software Engineering Division at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab & led development of the on-board flight software for NASA’s Apollo Guidance Computer. She was born #OTD in 1936 & turns 90 today! #WomenInSTEM
Two side-by-side black-and-white photographs of pioneering computer scientist Margaret Hamilton (born August 17, 1936). The left panel features a mature, close-up portrait where Hamilton gazes directly at the viewer with a serene, confident, and reflective expression, framed by her long, dark, slightly silvering hair. The right panel is a famous archival photograph showing a younger Hamilton standing indoors next to a towering stack of bound paper binders containing the Apollo Guidance Computer source code, which she led the development of at MIT. She is smiling broadly and wears a striped, long-sleeved mini dress with dark Mary Jane shoes and glasses, resting her hand proudly on top of the massive column of printed code. The overall composition contrasts her youthful triumph with her enduring legacy, capturing an optimistic, intellectually rigorous mood that highlights her monumental contributions to space exploration.

Curious to see how this policy plays out, but I think it’s a really smart move by Tidal, at the very least for marketing. I hope we see more tech companies paying attention to how wildly unpopular the incursion of AI into culture is, particularly for creative content
Screenshotted text: “Tidal will not allow music that is 100% AI-generated to be monetized. No royalties will go to such releases, nor will AI-generated uploads be eligible for direct-to-fan sales.

We will expand these policies to music that is substantially AI-generated when AI detection technology is sufficiently reliable to do so.”

See, people always want to make this just about "sports," but the real upshot here is that, 6-3, trans women can't make a claim under the Equal Protection Clause. And if they can't do that, it's hard to see how they have constitutional rights.

David Ignatow, from Living is What I Wanted: Last Poems (1999)
Fixed or impermanent

All these objects
fixed in their places--
trees, houses, the declaration
of independence, the bill of rights,
the constitution--awaiting
an end. The earth spins as if in search
of its executioner, perhaps
a comet sent at random
by the law of impermanence,
fixed in us
like a bent tree.

At least we have Rilke (from Rilke’s Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, Macy & Barrows translation)
Words printed on a page:

I would describe myself
like a landscape I’ve studied
at length, in detail;
like a word I’m coming to understand;
like a pitcher I pour from at mealtime;
like my mother’s face;
like a ship that carried me
when the waters raged.
