@tochterzwiebel

my new favorite fun fact is that the words "lord" and "lady" descend from old english words that mean "bread-guardian" and "bread-kneader", respectively!!

(image of etymology diagram)

weard (warden, guardian) + hlāf (loaf) -> hlaford (a noble man or lord; literally, "bread-guardian")

hlāf (loaf) + daigijo (one who kneads) -> hlaefdige (a noble lady; literally, "bread-kneader")

hlaford -> laford -> lord

hlaefdige -> lafdi -> lady

THE HEAVENS—Her heart breaking when she discovered the Almighty fumbling over the most basic words on the page in front of Him, country music icon and noted humanitarian Dolly Parton was reportedly troubled to discover Wednesday that God was illiterate. “I just about washed off my makeup from crying when I saw the Lord struggle to sound out my name in the Book of Life, but now I’m thinking I might’ve been called here for a reason,” said Parton, adding that it was never too late to learn to read, not even if someone existed before the creation of the universe itself.

All of these things--casualization of academic labor, censorship, the insistence that academic research of any kind can be done by AI--are part of a longer project of devaluing academic work, especially in the humanities. You only work this hard to DEvalue something if it's valuable--and a threat.

I have been publishing YA novels for 20 years. I have seen a lot of nonsense written about the category, but this HarperCollins imprint has set a new bar. If anything is “cynical” or tailored for “shock value,” it’s this campaign, which might as well be from Moms for Liberty. This is loathsome.
