Boris Chertok was not Korolyovs "second man in line", that was Vasilly MIshin. Chertok blamed the workers under him for problems & failures, rather than taking responsibility. Saddiqi is a NASA historian not an expert on Soviet rocketry. Chertoks memoirs are a typical example of self-agrandisement.

He was born in Zhytomyr, saw an airplane for the first time in Nizhyn, pursued his passion in Odesa and Crimea, and never forgot his beloved Ukrainian songs throughout his life. Years later, in a Moscow jail, in his NKVD prisoner registration form, he wrote “Russian.”

By the way, a very telling detail. As a young man, a talented and enthusiastic devotee of early aviation in Ukraine, Korolyov entered the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1924 with enormous hopes, and in the admissions form, in the section asking for his nationality, he wrote “Ukrainian."

Korolyov was brutally beaten, with his interrogators forcing him to confess. The beatings were so severe that for many years afterward he was unable to raise his arms above his head. And once, an “investigator” shattered his jaw with a terrible blow from a glass decanter.

Stalin’s NKVD arrested the talented aviator and engineer in Moscow, in his apartment, tearing him from the arms of his sobbing, shocked wife after a humiliating search. The charges (traditional for the era of the “Great Terror”) were “sabotage” and “espionage.”

Only about half of full-time private sector workers have access to short-term disability coverage. For part-timers it's 1 in 5. (This is per Bureau of Labor Statistics data from March 2025.) Your ability to fully recover from a heart attack should never depend on your employer's benefits package.

What fixes this? Start with federal legislation guaranteeing paid medical leave. Nobody should have to choose between recovering from a heart attack and paying their rent.

Russian attacks injure civilians and damage infrastructure across Ukraine
Russian forces launched overnight attacks on Kyiv and Kyiv region in the early hours of September 29, injuring three people, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service . In Sumy region, shelling hit 24 settlements, leaving at least four people injured and damaging rail infrastructure. Railway facilities were also struck in Vinnytsia region, while in Odesa, Russian forces targeted an animal shelter . The State Emergency Service reported that Russian drones targeted the Bucha district in Kyiv region, injuring two people who were hospitalized and causing a fire in a private home. In Kyiv itself, preliminary reports indicated residential buildings in the Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts suffered damage, with one person wounded. Sumy region police said on the morning of September 29 that Russia had shelled 24 settlements in the region over the previous day. The attacks left four people injured and caused damage to locomotives and railway tracks. Authorities in Vinnytsia region said railway infrastructure was also hit there. The attack left about 15,000 customers without power. Serhii Lysak, head of the Odesa City Military Administration, said on the morning of September 29 that city crews were continuing to clear damage from Russian strikes on September 28. According to updated figures , six people were injured in those attacks, two of whom remain in hospital. Russian forces continued their assault on Odesa on the night of September 29, with reports that one strike hit a dog shelter. The Telegram channel Dumskaya published video showing the shelter in flames. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that eight people were injured in the Odesa attacks, with residential buildings and the animal shelter among the damaged sites. The strikes also affected a manufacturing facility, a warehouse, a school gymnasium, a dormitory, and both private and commercial vehicles. Ukraine’s Air Force stated that on the night of September 29, Russia attacked the country with an anti-ship Zircon/Oniks missile, two Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, and 152 drones. Air defense forces reportedly shot down 109 airborne targets .
