It's pickling season for preserves in Ukraine again. Old Slavic tradition. Maybe half of Ukrainians do it, just a guess. My wife does, but not everyone we know does it. Clean/sterilise the jars. Have tomatoes (we'll buy cucumbers tomorrow). Finished jars ready for winter, from a previous season. 🥒🍅🫙

On Ukrainian independence day, pics I took in May 2014 during the "maidan", which was a sort of independence protest to finally break form the russian yoke. The tents were not cleared from Khreshchatyk Street until late 2014. Also some pics from the actual maidan (i.e. square). Alt-text has details.

You can see the tents of the hardcore protesters and Ukrainian patriots that didn't want russian influence anymore. If you wanted too you could call into the tents and say hi and have a chat with them. The missing sheet pavement blocks, where the water is, are when they were removed to throw at the Berkut riot police, which killed protesters.

The Ukrainian flag facade cover on the building says "Edina Krayina" (i.e. A Single Country, or One Country, meaning, not separated, because the russians wanted to split Ukraine from East vs West back then in 2014, and still do now.

Echoes of Pokrovsk: Before de-Sovietisation after August 2015, Pokrovsk was called "Красноармейск", The sign in the first pic was changed to Pokrovsk eventually. The hammer & sickle monument was knocked down, good riddance. My wifes Uni in third pic. All destroyed now. Alt-text has more details.

Before August 2015 the old Soviet name for Pokrovsk was "Красноармейск" (Krasnoarmeysk) - Krasno = russian for red, armeysk different tense of armiya = army. So "Red Army Town". That sign on top was changed to Pokrovsk eventually. Original name of the town was Grishino in Tsarist days. Major railway yard and hub along with neighbouring Yasinovata.

"Serp i Molot" (literally, Sickle & Hammer) Soviet monument, most towns had these, they are all knocked down in Ukraine now (except in the so-called fake DNR and LNR), a very offensive symbol of evil. They used to be painted in red (communist colours of revolution), but after 2014, they were painted in Ukrainian flag colours. This particular one in Pokrovsk was knocked down and removed in August 2015.

My Ukrainian wife was a language teacher at this Uni, it's destroyed now along with all of Pokrovsk. On the top under the Tryzub (Trident) symbol of Ukraine - literally "three teeth", it says.

Echoes of Donetsk Oblast: Chasiv Yar. Visited this town in 2016 on the way to the Artemovsk winery in Bakhmut (old name Artemivsk), 10km (6 miles) away. Chasiv Yar is destroyed now. We stopped at the museum in the centre of town. Read the Alt-Text for more details. Will post Bakhmut pics next.

Never forget Zhepa: During the Yugoslav breakup wars, in July 1995, the Bosnian Serb army committed genocide against 8,000 Bosnians in Srebrenica. Its next target was the "safe enclave" of Zhepa, which was guarded by 79 Ukrainian UNPROFOR peacekeepers from the 240th separate special battalion. 1/4

The Ukrainian protectors are sitting on a French AMX-10, the journalist calls it a "tank" in the caption, but really it's more like an IFV (Infantry Fighting vehicle. Anyway, just over a quarter of a century later, the French gave us in Ukraine these rather outdated vehicles after 2022. That's some synchronicity.

The Ukrainian wife feeding the stray dogs some chicken bones and other scraps of meat and left overs. Food is never wasted in Ukraine. The Soviet engineered famine in 1932 to 1933 called the "Holodomor" is not forgotten here.

Two of the stray dogs following us home of their feed. They more or less lived in that car park to the right at the blue building (a furniture shop) and our block of flats. My wife and I and other residents regularly gave them food and left them make shift plastic bowls water (cut the bottom off a 2L bottle of coke etc). They'd just drink out of puddles when it rained. They were friendly, they knew humans = food + water!

Ukraine never qualified for the world cup this year, & my backup team Bosnia got knocked out, so I lost interest. I dug up some old pics from Donetsk City in 2014, public statues of the 2012 UEFA Euro ⚽ tournament, hosted by Poland and Ukraine. It's all ruined now, in the decrepit so-called "DNR".

Echoes of Pokrovsk. Stray dogs. 5th July 2015. I lived there for 9 years before it was "liberated" (i.e. destroyed) by the russian barbarians. Anyway, here's a friendly dog that found us at a cafe next to a bus station on the outskirts of town. Maybe he's the cafe dog. Read the alt text for details.

The parking signs says "dlya klientov kafe" (for the clients of the cafe). The main green sign says "SHASHL'IK" (i.e. kebabs in hunks of meat on a skewer) then obviously PIZZA in English!

Very friendly dog lying right down next to the Ukrainian wife.

When I sat down on the stump just behind my wife and dog in the previous 2 pictures, she started rolling around right in front of me. We couldn't adopt her, we lived in an apartment with 3 cats. But maybe she was the cafe dog or just hung around for the food (there was some other stray dogs nearby). Anyway, the cafe and bus station are all destroyed now and the poor dog is probably no longer alive. :(

Entering the platform, as above, if you ever visit there, go left, just in case they covered up the unexploded dud shells & left them there. Even without exploding the supersonic shock wave blew out the windows. The curtains are just open to the wind. Station was done up for EURO 2012 football comp.

I noticed something where my wife gives online classes. Her communal staff laptop was provided by #USAID. Her uni was displaced from Donetsk City in 2014 to Pokrovsk, then to west Ukraine. The Russians bombed her uni. My wife's macbook is an old 2011 model. The extra USAID laptop really helps her.

Pokrovsk telecom station, August 2015. We used to have Sunday summer BBQ's there in better times. The interior equipment, a lot of it old Soviet era (but not all). The stray cats of course. That red box is a Soviet "extinguisher" (no modern foam) for electrical fires. The box says "песок" (sand). 🧯

With Pokrovsk under siege. I am digging up some old photos from my library. August 2015. An old abandoned Soviet-era fun park, most likely, for small kids, that maybe survived a decade or more post 1991. There are plenty of these in the simmer all over Ukraine, but they use way newer fun park rides.
