NYT managing editor: "So, godlike AI system, what do we mean by this?" NYT reporter: "“To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.” [beat] NYT managing editor: "Make sure there's a period after the A and the I. Ship it."
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s chief executive, asked top executives last year to make cuts to their 2026 budgets while he pours money into A.I. research. As Meta faces competition from companies like OpenAI and Google, Mr. Zuckerberg has increased the budget for TBD Lab, the skunk works unit at Meta that aims to build superintelligence, a godlike A.I. system.

This Thanksgiving, read a Native American poet’s song of healing
When Allison Adelle Hedge Coke wrote her poem “America, I Sing Back,” she considered each word a note in a larger song about the nation. “I thought about America singing. That’s why this poem is a song -- a voice calling for reclamation.”

You hit on a distinction….theres a difference between play and games that gets overlooked almost always. I also can’t remember who said it (Koster?) but the opposite of play isn’t work, it’s boredom. Also I love Gadamer’s use of spielraum to refer to play as mental wiggle room (paraphrase) 🤓

You asked ;-) we don’t look at the structures we operate inside. Employees are costs. They’re not assets. Ask the CFO. No matter how much we want to believe the opposite, we operate in a structure that is genetically built to minimize our cost impact. We can change that but first we have to see it

Our work on Great Zimbabwe used surface hydrology, ethnographic survey and geoarc to show that dhaka pits, previously interpreted as clay pits, were likely intended to collect and store water. These smart local adaptations to water scarcity are so interesting www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
A relief map showing Great Zimbabwe and its immediate landscape context, along with the dhaka pits identified as closed depressions using hydrological analyses of lidar data, coloured by their volumetric capacity. Two of the pits have profiles across them, showing how the spoil was used to create a catchwork / dam across contour.

Yep. Co-opting the tools of the megacorp - that’s Neuromancer, Diamond Age etc. We don’t see the invention of new tech that has democratic, open society elements inherent.

Mark Oehlert @moehlert.bsky.social · 07/06/2025
Right but then to win, the underdogs have to co-opt the rich tech. So the cycle can begin again. I think that’s why IEDs were such a psychological blow. The tech was so cheap but could inflict so much damage.

Mark Oehlert @moehlert.bsky.social · 07/06/2025
None of these techs are asymmetric toward the downtrodden, they are always cast as in the service of the ruling class...much like the crossbow. Weird huh? ;-) :-)
100
Mark Oehlert @moehlert.bsky.social · 07/06/2025
when the crossbow became prevalent, you can find church writings that include a little devil on a crossbow - the church vilified it. The real reason being was that it was the first weapon that a peasant could wield and kill a knight. The knights supported the church, therefore it was evil

Mark Oehlert @moehlert.bsky.social · 07/06/2025
Literally age-old dynamic where the new tech becomes the villain. The crossbow was a villain. Then much later, robots, then cyborgs, (along the way Arabs, Russians, etc) have all been default villains. We add evil to the things we don’t understand.
