Nighthawks: this is who you are in the dark
For all the chaos we see on a seemingly daily basis in the games industry of 2026, good things are still happening. One of my favourite trends is the resurgence of what I like to call, using my own idiosyncratic taxonomy of the genre, the "storytelling RPG". This is a very distinctive type of game...

and even if it is a rising trend, I think there's going to be an increasing market (and appreciation) for those who deliberately choose to *not* get on board with that side of things. It's a frustrating time we live in, but I'm sure things will right themselves when the money runs out.

The vast majority of reactions to vibe-coded/machine-translated/AI slop projects I've seen have been negative. There's the odd person who likes to go against the grain, but the majority opinion, from where I'm sitting, is very much negative towards this sort of thing. So I wouldn't worry for the mo!

I remain pretty bummed out by the state of decompilations, ports, FPGA cores etc these days. The rise of GenAI has really flooded the whole scene with garbage and kinda poisoned the whole concept. Good piece from @pandamonium.bsky.social on it www.segasaturnshiro.com/2026/09/24/c...

These days, I feel like a lot of people determine that they're either into narrative-centric games or mechanics-centric games, and don't do much in the way of cross-pollination, even when the games themselves do so. I'm sure we all know at least one person who takes inexplicable pride in the fact that they skip all...

Not a game dev so PMJI, but speaking as a consumer, there are definitely a lot more nasty reviews today. In many cases, they wilfully misread or misrepresent what a game is actually trying to do, then get mad when the real game doesn't match the thing they made up in their head.

being as old a fart as I am, it is too hard to do just 9 games. So I did 9 games for several "eras" in my life: Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, SNES, N64 and PlayStation, and "modern" (PS2 onwards). All of these have had a huge influence on me for one reason or another, and there are many, many others!
My 9 Games for Atari 8-bit:
River Raid
Rescue on Fractalus
Preppie!
Boulder Dash
Flip & Flop
Juice!
Pole Position
Diamonds
The Great American Cross-Country Road RaceMy 9 Games for Atari ST:
Falcon
F-15 Strike Eagle II
Space Rogue
Flight Simulator II
King's Quest
Starflight
Rod-Land
Time Bandit
Buggy BoyMy 9 Games for 16/32/64-bit consoles:
Super Mario World
SimCity (SNES)
Starfox
Ridge Racer Type 4
Final Fantasy VII
Metal Gear Solid
Xenogears
Tetrisphere
Silent HillMy 9 Games for PS2 onwards:
Silent Hill 2
Shadow of Memories
Ar Tonelico
Persona 3
Ace Combat 4
Nier
Atelier Rorona
Demon Gaze
Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2

One of my favourite things in video games is when a game takes a very small, pretty mundane environment and renders it in a ridiculous level of detail. the thing about people like this is that they have no respect for the craft that goes into games. The mod dev here clearly has zero respect for those who work on the mechanics and balance of a game, just as AI yassifaction enthusiasts have zero respect for an art team's vision of a game's aesthetic.

I finally have that game: Nighthawks. I get the exact same vibe from some of its best (most horrible) questlines as I did when doing things like the Bloody Baron bit in The Witcher 3... only without the bits that irritated me. I am about halfway through Act II, and it's clear that this is *special*.

Pete Davison @moegamer.net · 24/09/2026
I spent the entirety of The Witcher 3 wishing it wasn't an open world game, wishing it didn't have action combat, and wishing that it instead focused entirely on its best bits: the parts where its morally ambiguous hero investigates horrible things happening, and then deals with them in some way.

I'm definitely going to write about Nighthawks in more detail when I've played a bit more, but for the immediate now I just want to share an important Thing That I've Been Feeling about it. Some background first, and I promise this is relevant: I did not really like The Witcher 3.

Yeah, I have been increasingly feeling that way also. Sow mistrust, make everyone paranoid, then offer some sort of "solution" that doesn't actually solve the problem, and instead makes the worst people in the world even wealthier.
