I stand on one end of a balanced plank and on the other end is a large block of concrete. I walk along the plank to the concrete and chip away at it with a chisel, occasionally returning to the other side to check our relative weights until the see-saw balances perfectly. The concrete becomes my sculptural equivalent. A likeness in mass. A self portrait, baring all the scars of the work that made it.

We’ve designed a modernist, durational performance that results in a sculptural installation. The work speaks to our established practice of durational performance installation, but is also a personal reflection upon the relationship I have with my body. I have osteonecrosis, a degenerative condition that causes the death of bone tissue and limits the movement in my feet. As a physical performer, I struggle to speak about this and how it relates to our practice. We decided that the best way to communicate it is through our work together. Using the performance as a focal point to involve audiences and other artists in a discussion around how we see ourselves and how that influences what we make and do, we invite people to use this performance as a focal point for discussions and reflections around their own body, how work has shaped it, and how they view it.

I had rarely even considered the injuries many of my peers had already endured through dance and physical practices; permanently disfigured feet from being en pointe, broken ankles from misplaced foot-holds in rock-climbing, let alone the slowly evolving degenerative spinal injuries developed from sitting in office jobs or repetitive manual labour in supermarkets and the food factory I worked in; the cumulative conditions and pain which most people endure from the labour of their everyday working lives. What our body endures. How work impacts our body. How it changes our functionality. How it changes us.

I remember reading about Tehching Hsieh’s ‘Jump Piece’ when I was a student in the 90s. He leapt from a second floor window on to the concrete pavement below. He broke both ankles. I recall thinking that it was a strange thing to do, to put your body through something so brutal, knowingly and willingly. He referred to injury as accompanying the work, as though it were a necessary part of the process.

Sky light, 2026
I return to my fascination with velux windows here with a picture of an opened velux skylight, creating an abstract shape of light against a darker background. The edges of the shape are subtle and soft.

What absolute toss in the independent. This should never have made it past an editor. It's reckless and divisive.

The King in Yellow, 2026
a photograph of some yellow flowers. really. it's rather unremarkable.

I suppose the shallow focus is nice in a blurry, dreamy sort of way.

Honestly, it was the colour I wanted to capture, but even now it feels like it has sifted through my fingers like sand, leaving a gritty reminder of my own inability.

Street light, not street light, 2026
A photograph where the sun (reflected from a nearby building) lights up a spot next to a lamp post.

In the fore ground are some bollards. A lot of straight lines here, many vertical but also a horizontal assemblage in the bricks behind.

there's a sort of cross-hatched texture to it all, rendered rather angelic with a soft halo.

If you read this, let me know. There's a small prize.

Last saw Hockney's work at Saltaire a few years ago. Honestly, it was a mixed bag. But I also got the feeling he was making art for the purest reason, for himself. Some enterprising yoof was encouraged to make art.
