My op-ed today in the Pasadena Star-News on the misguided @mayor.lacity.gov #karenbass free fares proposal for @metrolosangeles.bsky.social: Give riders what they actually say they prioritize: a safer, more frequent system. www.pasadenastarnews.com/2026/08/08/l...

LA Metro: Free fares for all? Or safe, world class service?
Bass has already achieved a fare free system. But at the cost of discouraging ridership and depriving the system of revenue that could be used to pay for system enhancements.

@mayor.lacity.gov pls listen to what a vast majority of @metrolosangeles.bsky.social riders said when surveyed about their top priorities for LA Metro: safety, security, cleanliness, frequency, and reliability. Not free fares. Secure and speed up the system: fare enforcement, signal prioritization.

Yes!! Prop 13 truly broke California. States w/o income taxes, like Texas and Florida, tend to really tax property. They also tend to build, baby, build. CA could learn something and tax property again at realistic rates, paired with lower income tax for working people. #FixCalifornia

Washington Post makes a good point, for once. When politicos want to make buses free (or stop fare enforcement), it too often shows a bias that views transit = welfare for poor people, rather than transit = frequent service for all. Almost never does free = frequent. wapo.st/4oSryaC

Tonight, something incredible happened because of advocates like @henryfung.bsky.social and @brownpa.bsky.social. The SGV Service Council sent a letter to the LA Metro Board urging them to bring back fare checks. (Though the final version replaced "take immediate action" with "consider".)
Dear Chair Dutra and Members of the Board:

The San Gabriel Valley Service Council respectfully submits this correspondence regarding fare enforcement across the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority system and urges the Board to take immediate action to reinstate regular onboard fare inspections.

Recent trends indicate reduced fare enforcement activity alongside ongoing concerns related to fare compliance, safety, and rider confidence. As the Board advances fare and service policies, a consistent and visible enforcement presence can help reinforce fairness and system integrity. These considerations are consistent with concerns raised by riders, operators, and regional stakeholders regarding system safety and equity.

LA Metro is well-positioned to implement a balanced approach through its Transit Security workforce, administrative citation process, and affordability programs such as LIFE. In addition, coordinated support from law enforcement partners, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles Police Department, can further strengthen compliance efforts and enhance overall system safety.

Accordingly, the San Gabriel Valley Service Council respectfully recommends that the LA Metro Board of Directors take immediate action to direct the reinstatement of regular onboard fare enforcement activities as a near-term operational priority.

Sincerely,
SGV Service Council
