How common is multicellularity in bacteria? And archaea? And how does it evolve? We wrote a short review "On the architecture and evolution of prokaryotic multicellularity". Preprint link: bit.ly/4ta06Gq Sharing and comments are much appreciated. 1/4
An overview of bacterial multicellular formations: biofilms, filaments, free-floating aggregates, motile collectives and fruiting bodies. For each form, we mention an analogous eukaryotic multicellular form (respectively animal epitelia, filaments in fungi, Volvox, Dictyostelium/social animals, Dictyostelium and other slime moulds)

A few days ago, the @cnrs.fr Welcome Day for new permanent staff took place. Far from feeling welcoming, it highlighted some questions about how international talent is included—or excluded—in the system! See 🧵below about my experience! @cnrs.fr @cnrsecologie.bsky.social @cnrs-paris.bsky.social

How do #cyanobacteria keep amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) stable inside their cells? Our new #JACS paper shows — via solid-state NMR — that a protein shell and water molecules stabilize ACC. 👉 pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.... #biomineralization @biomin-impmc.bsky.social @ulbruxelles.bsky.social

Proteins and Water Control the Stability of the Intracellular Amorphous Calcium Carbonate Inclusions Formed by Cyanobacteria
The formation of stable intracellular amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) inclusions is widespread among bacteria, yet the mechanisms underlying their long-term stabilization remain unresolved. In this ...

Wound healing is a hallmark feature of all life, including single cells. In a new preprint, Ambika Nadkarni @biochembika.bsky.social investigates a new dimension in cellular wound healing: how cells recover AFTER the wound has been closed www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

In 2010, a scientist argued that 2.1 billion-year-old African specimens showed complex life appearing 500 million years ahead of schedule. His critics say they are — literally — fool's gold. At stake? The question of when and how complex life arose at all. My cover story (!) for @sciam.bsky.social!
