We mourn deeply the loss of Alice Wong, writer, activist, and founder of the Disability Visibility Project. She uplifted Disabled stories, championed inclusive disaster work, and fought for our survival and joy. Her impact will continue to shape our community for years to come.
ID: A memorial graphic with a dark green background shows the text “Alice Wong, March 27, 1974 – November 14, 2025.” Below, “REST IN POWER” arches over a red dotted semi-circle. In front is Alice Wong seated in her power wheelchair with her ventilator. Stylized green leaves frame the bottom.

Alice Wong was one of the most effective people challenging the Whiteness of disability communities and its many flaws, but who believed fiercely in us as a community, in disabled people as oracles. Alice brought so much to so many of us, it’s hard to measure the kind of gratitude I have for that.

IAVCEI cancel one of their meetings due to the ongoing situation in the US 🌋
AVCEI
In agreement with the Cities and Volcanoes Commission and the
IAVCEI Executive Committee, the Local Organizing Committee for the 13th Cities on Volcanoes (COV13) conference, originally planned for July 2026 in Bend, Oregon (U.S.A.), has made the difficult decision to postpone the event to a future date.
Recent developments have created uncertainty around our ability to confidently and effectively host the conference in 2026 and to welcome attendees without concern.
This decision follows many months of collaboration with more than 70 local, regional, and international partners to shape an engaging and meaningful program. We recognize this news will be disappointing, but we believe it is the most responsible choice under the current circumstances, grounded in care for our colleagues and partners.
With continued support from the Cities and Volcanoes Commission and IAVCEl, we are already exploring the possibility of hosting COV in Bend in 2030 or 2032, and we remain hopeful for opportunities to gather in the future.

🚨UPDATE: Rümeysa Öztürk has now suffered three separate asthma attacks while in DHS custody. She has not received her required asthma medications—a violation of her fundamental right to medical care. This is cruelty, it is neglect, and it is a damning moral and legal failure.
Pressley, Warren, Markey Sound Alarm on Rümeysa Öztürk’s Medical Neglect, Renew Urgent Calls for Her Release (1/2):

“It is unconscionable that Rümeysa Öztürk—a young woman pursuing her education, exercising her First Amendment rights, and contributing to her community—remains detained by DHS. Her ongoing incarceration is not only a blatant violation of her constitutional rights to due process and free speech, but it is now an egregious denial of her fundamental right to medical care. Pressley, Warren, Markey Sound Alarm on Rümeysa Öztürk’s Medical Neglect, Renew Urgent Calls for Her Release (2/2):

“According to her lawyer, Rümeysa has not received her required asthma medications and has now suffered three separate asthma attacks while in custody. This is cruelty, it is neglect, and it is a damning moral and legal failure.

“As her representatives in Congress, we demand DHS immediately provide Rümeysa with access to the health care she needs, and absent compelling evidence justifying her detention and the revocation of her status, we call for Ozturk’s release and the restoration of her visa. Every minute she remains in custody is another minute her health and rights are at risk, and DHS must move with urgency.”

This is so dark, so fucked up: "Doctors can bring up AS before patient has mentioned it, including to under-18s (who aren't yet eligible)" "You can receive AS if you're doing it for others' sake e.g. because care costs are too expensive"
NHS	NHS Act founding principles can be declared to include assisted suicide.
Provision can be outsourced. No profit cap in law (Amendment NC36)
First mention	Doctors can bring up AS before patient has mentioned it (8, 124), including to under-18s (who aren't yet eligible) (319)
Feeling like a burden	You can receive assisted suicide if you're doing it for others' sake, eg because care costs are too expensive (94)
Diagnosis	Doctors don't need 'reasonable certainty' that applicant has six months to live, just balance of probabilities (248). Conditions whose progress can be controlled (eg diabetes) may qualify for AS if other criteria met (9)
Disability	Committee rejected stronger language exempting disability (lI). Health Secretary must provide regulations for independent advocates for those with learning disabilities (NC25)
Anorexia	Committee rejected all five amendments backed by eating disorders charities to exempt consequences of eating disorders from definition of
'terminal illness' (9, 10, I1, 48, 402)
Mental Capacity Act	No higher threshold than MCA (35). No need to understand care options (50). Capacity assumed unless proven otherwise (322). Doesn't need to be beyond reasonable doubt (398). If doubt over meeting MCA
threshold, mandatory psychiatric referral (6)
Mental illness	No need to check for remediable suicide risk factors (270). Those with
'an impairment of judgment arising from a mental disorder' still qualify
(363). Comorbidities from a mental illness qualify for AS (283). No need for applicant to meet with a mental health professional (I. 14)
Care alternatives	Palliative care referral must be offered 108) but no guaranteed palliative care consultation (281). No mandatory referral to a multidisciplinary team (425). Applicants must be told what care is 'appropriate' but not whether it is available (275). No need for doctor to consult specialist in patient's condition (285)
Coercion	Training (not specified) for doctors (186, 20). Maximum life sentence for…

Hossam Shabat, a 23 year old journalist who documented the genocide of his people left a final message. shared by his team.
screenshot of @HossamShabat on twitter: This is Hossam’s team, and we are sharing his final message :

“If you’re reading this, it means I have been killed—most likely targeted—by the Israeli occupation forces. When this all began, I was only 21 years old—a college student with dreams like anyone else. For past 18 months, I have dedicated every moment of my life to my people. I documented the horrors in northern Gaza minute by minute, determined to show the world the truth they tried to bury. I slept on pavements, in schools, in tents—anywhere I could. Each day was a battle for survival. I endured hunger for months, yet I never left my people’s side.

By God, I fulfilled my duty as a journalist. I risked everything to report the truth, and now, I am finally at rest—something I haven’t known in the past 18 months . I did all this because I believe in the Palestinian cause. I believe this land is ours, and it has been the highest honor of my life to die defending it and serving its people.

I ask you now: do not stop speaking about Gaza. Do not let the world look away. Keep fighting, keep telling our stories—until Palestine is free.”

— For the last time, Hossam Shabat, from northern Gaza.

These present another danger now, especially for migrants: Diversion programs often require people to admit to certain facts or plead guilty to an offense in exchange for a program over prosecution—which in some cases can now subject them to mandatory detention and deportation under new federal law.

Diversion programs are often sites of policing, coercion and harm, while rarely prioritizing the needs and perspectives of participants—and now, these programs, amid the ongoing attacks on migrants and the context of this country's "war on drugs," pose a particular danger to migrants and to parents.

The Fearless Benjamin Lay was such a strong starting point for our Life Stories of Antislavery Abolitionists reading group. Quakers were early in adopting an anti-slavery stance, but they didn't start off on the right side. Benjamin Lay was a true badass.
