The problem with the left and right is that they make 2 critical mistakes: 1. They attempt to quantize the human condition into a set of bipolar axes with no variation between extremes. 2. They assume their subjective definition of evil is a true reflection of objective reality.

Writing translyrics is loads of fun, it’s such a neat challenge to convey the right meaning while also getting the right rhythms and rhymes. Just completed Cherry Pop, so the chorus (as expected of a Deco song) was the best part to write!

Ok, so I just learned that a fathom is ~6 feet…….why didn’t public health experts tell us all to stay 1 fathom apart from one another, it would have made it so much more fun and way less depressing

Random thought of the day: When the Sun becomes a white dwarf, will Jupiter absorb enough of its mass to become a star? Time to do some calculus!

Had a great night observing on the Lick last night, despite a few technical issues. Completely wrecked my sleep schedule, but love requires sacrifice. 10/10 would do it again!

It isn’t enough to tell people to “trust the science/scientists”. Those truly committed to empirical truth and technological progress need to recognize that no one should be obligated to simply take the word of self-described experts with fancy titles using fancy language: that’s what church is for.

One reason for this is that right-wing philosophy is, at its core, about the "naturalness" of hierarchies. Liberalism is, at its core, about dissolving hierarchies. And if you're an intellectual of the pundit class, the idea that people like you *naturally belong* on top can be awfully appealing.

Writing a philosophy essay is so much fun, because you have like a dozen epiphanies about the most random and insignificant things by the time you’re finished.

Reading the OG Wizard of Oz books is as surreal as it is fascinating. It’s the fantasy and lore-building of Tolkien written with the childish simplicity of Doctor Seuss, and I for one am loving it. Highly recommend, especially because the old usage of “queer” leads to some truly hilarious sentences.

Hot take: 1/ The reason Democrats don’t know how to win elections anymore is because liberals have fully bought into the belief that they are the end of history: they believe that every society will inevitably turn into a secular democratic republic without any effort having to be applied.

I think the root of the problem is that every 4 years, half the people in this country are convinced that the other half are about to destroy them and everything they love. We are quickly reaching a point where the federal system will either need to ascend to autocracy or descend to confederation.

The present situation is very reminiscent of the years preceding the Bronze Age Collapse. Resource scarcity, trade restrictions, mass-migrations, crumbling institutions, increased conflict, and we are just decades away from climatological changes rendering our current scale of habitation untenable.

Here is the version for your cat.
A space heater facing off against a stuffed bear. They are much too close to one another. Hovering over them is a vast fire entity with the face of a dragon waiting for a fire to spark. The text reads: meow mow mow meow mowmow. mow mow meowmow mow 1 meter. hiss. mow mow, mow, meow, meow, mow, meow. mow meow.

To know fear is to admit weakness. To admit weakness is to concede there are things beyond your power. To concede there are things beyond your power is to acknowledge your own humanity. To acknowledge your own humanity is to accept your existence. To accept your existence is to know peace.

The largest photomosaic of the Andromeda galaxy, assembled from Hubble observations, has been unveiled. It took more than 10 years to collect data for this colorful portrait of our neighboring galaxy and was created from more than 600 snapshots: bit.ly/405MsbK #AAS245 🔭 🧪
The Andromeda galaxy, a spiral galaxy, spreads across the width. It is tilted nearly edge-on to our line of sight so that it appears as an extreme oval on its side. The borders of the galaxy are jagged because the image is a mosaic of smaller, square images. The outer edges of the galaxy are blue, while the inner two-thirds are yellowish with a bright, central core. Dark, dusty filamentary clouds wrap around the outer half of the galaxy’s disk. At 10 o’clock, a smaller dwarf elliptical galaxy forms a fuzzy, yellow blob. Hubble’s sharp vision distinguishes about 200 million stars within the image. The background of space is black. There are what appears to be steps toward the bottom, mainly toward the middle, which indicates where no data were taken.

the solution to light pollution is actually so simple
A graphic showing four different types of street lights ranging from very bad (completely spherical and shining in the sky) to best (covered at the top and only shining on the ground), causing less light pollution.

Nowadays, geoengineering typically refers to solar radiation modification but sometimes still includes carbon dioxide removal. What this not-so-smart member of Congress is talking about is weather modification. But if you're in a draught, cloud seeding ain't gonna create moisture out of thin air.
A tweet by Marjorie Taylor Greene conflating geoengineering with weather modification, asking why we don't use cloud seeding to bring rain to combat wildfires in California. The tweet includes the date and time of posting, the author's username, and view count.

The fundamental problem with the incoming president is that he wants to run our country like a business. There are (at least) 2 problems with this: 1. Countries are not businesses. 2. He’s not a good businessman. It’s kinda like asking a bad electrician to fix your plumbing.

If I was in charge of a school and this passes, I would mandate that every single athlete has to undergo an inspection before every sporting event. Not to address any real problem, simply to traumatize and disgust students and parents so thoroughly that they never support such a practice ever again.

Hot take: The left needs a new party, because the current one has become too elitist and dependent on corporate interests. That isn’t to say there are no principled people who genuinely want to do good left within it, merely that the constraints of the current system prevent them from doing so.

Random Philosophical Question of the Night: Is it moral to help someone by doing something immoral? I would argue no, but only if you know that the act in isolation is immoral. Even if your intentions are good, your knowledge of the act’s evil poisons the motive and makes you implicitly vicious.

The key conflict that defines American politics is not over whether government should play a role in helping people. As these Trump supporters confirm, there is actually a broad consensus that it absolutely should! The real fault line is defined by who counts as “people” - who “deserves” help?

The way a religion goes morally wrong in practice is, instead of viewing its main character's moral standards as something to aspire to, they get reinterpreted to match the lower moral standards the believers find easier—and then their divine source becomes an authority reinforcing that lowness.

Ever wonder what the secret ingredient is in your favorite dessert? We can’t answer that, but we can share this planet formation recipe! It takes a high degree of precision and a lot of patience, but the result is pretty spectacular: bit.ly/3Cv3k2e 🔭 🧪
A horizontal infographic illustrates a loose recipe for planet formation. Title text at top left reads “Recipe for Planet Formation, with star and nebula.” Below the headline are two lists: Ingredients, which lists four ingredients, and Methods, which is threaded throughout the infographic in numerical order. In the Methods section, gas, dust, and ice in a nebula contracts under gravity to form a star, surrounded by a flattened disk. Inside the disk, dust and ice stick together to form planetesimals and then planets, leading to a planetary system.
