The problem with the left and right is that they make 2 critical mistakes: 1. They attempt to quantize the human condition into a set of bipolar axes with no variation between extremes. 2. They assume their subjective definition of evil is a true reflection of objective reality.

Writing translyrics is loads of fun, it’s such a neat challenge to convey the right meaning while also getting the right rhythms and rhymes. Just completed Cherry Pop, so the chorus (as expected of a Deco song) was the best part to write!

Ok, so I just learned that a fathom is ~6 feet…….why didn’t public health experts tell us all to stay 1 fathom apart from one another, it would have made it so much more fun and way less depressing

UPDATE: I did the math for an *extremely* simplified model of a shell of gas located at Jupiter’s orbit, having Jupiter trace one rotation through that shell. I found that Jupiter would absorb roughly 2,000,000 Mount Everests worth of mass…. only 1 TRILLIONTH of its own! Not nearly the 80x needed!

Random thought of the day: When the Sun becomes a white dwarf, will Jupiter absorb enough of its mass to become a star? Time to do some calculus!

Even when they are overly skeptical, are they not justified in seeking a degree of certainty? Even if they are demanding an unreasonable standard of evidence, that’s just further motivation for us to do better to soothe their fears and doubts, and also to gather more data and communicate it better.

People should not be shunned for asking questions, even questions we think are stupid or arise because of their ignorance. They question the nature of things we take to be obvious not because they are somehow inferior or malicious, but because they have genuine concerns.

Instead, we who call ourselves scientists need to actually connect with and educate people as people, not pedagog to sheep as shepherds. We cannot merely preach without explanation, assuming authority on the basis of a glorified piece of paper received from university.

It isn’t enough to tell people to “trust the science/scientists”. Those truly committed to empirical truth and technological progress need to recognize that no one should be obligated to simply take the word of self-described experts with fancy titles using fancy language: that’s what church is for.

One reason for this is that right-wing philosophy is, at its core, about the "naturalness" of hierarchies. Liberalism is, at its core, about dissolving hierarchies. And if you're an intellectual of the pundit class, the idea that people like you *naturally belong* on top can be awfully appealing.

Writing a philosophy essay is so much fun, because you have like a dozen epiphanies about the most random and insignificant things by the time you’re finished.

Reading the OG Wizard of Oz books is as surreal as it is fascinating. It’s the fantasy and lore-building of Tolkien written with the childish simplicity of Doctor Seuss, and I for one am loving it. Highly recommend, especially because the old usage of “queer” leads to some truly hilarious sentences.

/7 Let me close by saying that this is not a condemnation of liberalism. This is my diagnosis of the affliction which seems to be slowly killing liberal societies all across the globe. Until liberals act like political animals rather than marble statues, don’t be surprised when they get eaten.

6/ While the center has apparently failed to see the need to play politics, the left has proven too schizophrenic and unfocused to play effectively, whereas the right has shown that not only are they willing to play, but that they are extremely effective players who are more than willing to cheat.

MMajor @mmajor13.bsky.social · 09/02/2025
5/ The sad fact is that liberalism cannot succeed on its own. It requires activists who believe in strong institutions, the rule of law, democracy, secularism, and cosmopolitanism. It requires people not only being educated as to why the old ways are bad, but why liberalism is good *for them*.
100 1
MMajor @mmajor13.bsky.social · 09/02/2025
4/ However, the crux of all of this is flawed. It arises from a narrow view of history which only really acknowledges the political developments of the 19th and 20th centuries at the exclusion of all others. Furthermore, it wrongly assumes that all opposition will magically inevitably disappear.
100 1
MMajor @mmajor13.bsky.social · 09/02/2025
3/ Another item of note is that liberals think they are too good for propaganda. They believe that rather than “brainwashing” people, that liberals instead “educate” them so they can use their aforementioned intelligence to arrive at the aforementioned conclusions.
100 1
MMajor @mmajor13.bsky.social · 09/02/2025
2/ Furthermore, liberals also put too much emphasis and hope on the intelligence of human beings. They believe everyone will inevitably support liberalism because it is so obviously the best form of government, and their intelligence is taken for granted that they will recognize that apparent fact

MMajor @mmajor13.bsky.social · 09/02/2025
Hot take: 1/ The reason Democrats don’t know how to win elections anymore is because liberals have fully bought into the belief that they are the end of history: they believe that every society will inevitably turn into a secular democratic republic without any effort having to be applied.

I think the root of the problem is that every 4 years, half the people in this country are convinced that the other half are about to destroy them and everything they love. We are quickly reaching a point where the federal system will either need to ascend to autocracy or descend to confederation.

Ironically, the Democrats being so dysfunctional means that the Republicans will be able to gut many of the old institutions with relative ease. Of course, the hardest part after tearing down the Bastille is building something better to replace it. The future is uncertain, and is almost upon us all.

The present situation is very reminiscent of the years preceding the Bronze Age Collapse. Resource scarcity, trade restrictions, mass-migrations, crumbling institutions, increased conflict, and we are just decades away from climatological changes rendering our current scale of habitation untenable.

To know fear is to admit weakness. To admit weakness is to concede there are things beyond your power. To concede there are things beyond your power is to acknowledge your own humanity. To acknowledge your own humanity is to accept your existence. To accept your existence is to know peace.

I’m just using game theory: better to avoid making a wrong decision while simultaneously depriving yourself of the chance to make the right one than to try to make the right decision and end up making the (far more probable) wrong one. Out of curiosity, could you explain the “choice of paradigm”?

MMajor @mmajor13.bsky.social · 19/01/2025
Under that premise, it would be preferable to doubt everything, and live as a Pyrrhonian. After all, if there is only one truth, and everything else was false, it would be too risky to essentially guess whose information was the truth. Better to just assume all is false to prevent mistakes.

configurations of a human mind, as possible into the government of a society leads to the best possible decisions being made. Choice is a non-issue: a truly intelligent being has no need of choice, as the correct answer would be so clear to them that it would be the only option under consideration.

Simple: A dictator can never achieve this because resources are finite, so sacrifices will have to be made at some point. This can be done equitably (rationing, usage limits, etc.) or inequitably (mass-imprisonment, mass-murder, etc.). Yet even if we assume the former, the problem still remains 1/
